Lower School Library News
October 2024
Hello Lower School Families,
October has been a busy month! Each day, I am learning more about the Lower School curriculum and looking for new ways to support the amazing work that the classroom teachers are doing. This picture shows a group of Grade 5 students spending their science class time researching environmental challenges in the library. Another highlight from this month has been participating in the Global Read Aloud with Grade 2. We are focusing on the picture books of the author Minh LĂȘ and have had some interesting discussions.

The Wild Robot movie and contest!
Many of Brimmer's Lower School students have read The Wild Robot and were excited to hear about the movie, which was recently released. I was lucky enough to hear the book's author, Peter Brown, speak in person before the movie showing!
From now until Monday, November 4, I am inviting any student in grades 2-5 to draw their favorite part of The Wild Robot. All participants' names will be entered in a raffle and three students will win a small Wild Robot-related prize. Papers with instructions are in the library. Enjoy!

Boston Book Festival this Saturday!

Ava Lin, Best Friend! is by the talented author/illustrator Vicky Fang. Her portrayal of six-year-old Ava Lin is spot on! I laughed out loud when Ava found a silver pebble but didn't know where to put it:
"I see Ms. Montgomery [her teacher] coming my way. My heart is bumping. What if she sees the special pebble and takes it away? What if I'm not supposed to have the special pebble? What should I do? I want to stick the pebble in my pocket, but I don't have any pockets! Ms. Montgomery is almost at my table. I need a pocket! I need this pebble! So I stick it in my ear."
This lighthearted chapter book is ideal for students who are working on developing their confidence as independent readers.
