Mariner Update Family Edition
Volume 14 Issue 7
I love our school, do you love our school!
Our gifts as parents/educators are meant to be shared and used to benefit others; essentially, that the purpose of receiving a gift is to give it away to others in service and love.
Principal Message: Stay the Course
Dear Mariner Family,
As we move into October, I want to take a moment to encourage you to stay the course. Together, we’ve built a strong foundation for success this year, and continuing our efforts will help each student grow academically, socially, and emotionally.
Staying the course means:
Attendance matters – Ensure your child is at school every day and arrives on time. Each day builds upon the last, and being present is key to staying engaged and progressing in their learning.
Daily reading – Continue reading with your child every day. This simple practice boosts their literacy skills and shows them that learning is valued at home.
Communication with teachers – Stay connected with your child’s teacher(s). Understand where your child is excelling and where they may need a bit more support. A strong parent-teacher partnership is vital in guiding your child’s academic journey.
Building confidence – Encourage your child by reminding them that every day at school matters. Learning takes time and perseverance, and each small step contributes to their success. Celebrate their efforts and progress, no matter how big or small.
Collaboration with the school – Continue to reach out to the school whenever you have questions, concerns, or ideas. When parents and educators work together, we can help every student find academic success, grow in confidence, and embrace a love for learning that will carry them forward in life.
Learning isn’t always fast, and progress isn’t always immediate, but with patience, commitment, and teamwork, we will support your child’s growth and guide them toward achieving their dreams.
Thank you for your continued dedication and partnership in making this a remarkable school year.
So, stay the course, seas the day, and SAIL together. As we do, success will continue to momentum WAVE across IHCS! Keep believing. It’s our turn.
Sincerely,
Your dedicated admin team -
Assistant Principal, Mrs. Barry, Assistant Principal, Mr. Castro, and Principal, Mr. Candelaria

Saturday STEAM and Mariachi School:
Water Rockets: I love our school do you love our school!?!? Saturday at IHCS included water rocketeers! Building water rockets is a fantastic hands-on project that allows students to explore a variety of science concepts. Here are some key science terms they can learn about: Newton’s laws of motion, thrust, pressure, aerodynamics, gravity, velocity, acceleration, projectile motion, potential and kinetic energy, drag, and Bernoulli’s Principle.
Saturday STEAM & Experimenting with Bubbles: Experimenting with bubbles provides students with a fun and hands-on way to explore various scientific concepts. Here are some key science terms they can learn about while working with bubbles: Gravity- the force that pulls the bubble toward the ground. Over time, gravity stretches the bubble's lower part, causing it to eventually pop as the film thins out. Surface tension- the force that causes the surface of a liquid (in this case, the bubble's outer layer) to behave like a stretched elastic membrane. Surface tension -makes bubbles form into spheres because a sphere has the least surface area for a given volume, making it the most efficient shape. Cohesion-the attraction between molecules of the same substance. In bubbles, water molecules are attracted to each other, which helps maintain the structure of the bubble. Air Pressure- The pressure exerted by the air inside the bubble and the surrounding atmosphere. The thin soap film of the bubble balances the pressure inside with the air pressure outside to maintain its shape. Elasticity- The ability of the bubble film to stretch and return to its original shape. The soap molecules in the bubble film allow it to expand and contract without immediately popping. Evaporation- The process by which water in the bubble's soap film turns into vapor. As water evaporates, the bubble's film becomes thinner, which can eventually cause it to burst.
K-1 and MarcoPolo Learning- Kindergarten and First Grade use MarcoPolo program. The program provides educators with a foundational pathway to support classroom quality, child engagement, and family connections. Kindergarten is pictured using the program to support the learning of the letter S, and the sound of the letter S. First grade listens to a video clip about animals and the teachers use this information to develop the new learning into a student collaboration opportunity, sharing of knowledge with the class and a writing assignment. If you went to sleep and could wake up and be any animal that you wanted to be, what animal would you want to be?
Herencia Mariachi Program: We had a strong fourth week of Mariachi Class! Current enrollment in our mariachi program is currently 76 students. Students will have a holiday performance in December, along with our IHCS Band. Thank you Mr. Chasteen for suggesting what will be a wonderful evening of music at IHCS.
Welcoming Spirit/Song Challenge: Volleyball team took the lead, and let’s see if our IHCS fall sports/teams can catch the WAVE! Let’s see if we can get our cross-country team, our football team and our cheer team can sing our school song and send a video to our admin team, and we can include it in our Friday Flag, announcements, etc…
Love for Life Student Ambassador Program: Permission Slips will be handed out to selected students on Monday, September 30th. We will begin the Love for Life Student Ambassador program on Wednesday, October 2, 2024. The program will take place after school in the front office, from 3:45-4:45, each Wednesday. Students will learn information Grades 3-5 group with support from Mrs. Santiago in the front office conference room and Mr. Llausas will support the middle school group who will meet upstairs in room 127.
The ambassador program will include a group of 15 selected students in grades 3-5 and an additional middle school group of 15 students, who will learn strategies to promote a positive school climate. The ambassador program will promote a positive school climate through mentorship and will emphasize the cultivation of resilience, equipping students with tools to prevent bullying, and to build confidence and empathy, and foster leadership skills. Student ambassadors will be supported to conduct in-class presentations to practice peer to peer support and raise awareness about relevant causes, as well as providing information on the resources available to support all students. This program will provide an opportunity to make a schoolwide outreach and impact students beyond the participating ambassadors.
Look for the WICOR/AVID: WICOR is Writing, Inquiry, Collaboration, Organizaion and Reading. Every Tuesday and Thursday in AVID class the Tutorial Request Form (TRF) is a form used by AVID students to request additional academic support. Students must complete a new TRF for each tutorial. The TRF is an important part of the AVID tutorial process because it helps students: Gain a deeper understanding. Students write down detailed steps that they can use in the future to study, answer similar questions, or solve similar problems. Students can reflect on their learning. Students reflect on the process and new learning as a way to synthesize new information. Students are supported through this process by a peer group that has the same teacher, same notes, and can contribute to everyone walking away with a better understanding of the described academic difficulty/problem of the day that is brought by a given student within the group.
Kindergarten Is off to an amazing start this year!
In ELA we are focusing on our letters and our sounds and learning about our Writing Foundational Skills .
Whole class we are developing our Phonological Awareness with our Heggerty Program, and applying our skills by sorting our sounds, and beginning to identify different sounds we hear in our words.
In math, we are developing our one-to-one correspondence and practicing our counting skills. We are focusing on our routines such as counting collections and Focus on the Question to develop our rote counting and to analyze data. The students love seeing all the data and counting how much in each group!
Lastly, we have been focusing on our emotions and feelings with our Sown to Grown Program and with our mini lessons with our Wellness Tosa. The students love learning about our Buddy Zone and how to make friends.
We are so excited to see what our Kindergartners can do this year!
