AMS Weekly Update
Monday, November 4 - Friday, November 8
Dear Adams Middle School Families,
As the weather turns colder, we want to make sure all our students are staying warm and cozy. Please remind them to bring a coat for dismissal, as students will need to wait outside for their rides. To support our staff who have meetings after school, we kindly ask that all students are picked up by 3:00 p.m. Thank you for helping us ensure everyone’s safety!
As we kick off Marking Period 2 we will be holding town hall meetings to review school expectations and share ways students can participate in our next Positive Behavior celebration: a Movie/Activity Day on Friday, November 22nd! To join the fun, students will need to meet a few criteria: have fewer than three tardies, no suspensions, and passing grades in all classes.
We’re incredibly proud of our students! A big shoutout to the 437 students who qualified for our Halloween Dance! You’re showing what it means to be an Adams Eagle! Let’s keep this momentum going, and let’s make MP2 another great success!
This past week, we celebrated school spirit and positivity with a series of exciting events! Our students and staff enjoyed a PBIS Dance and staff participated in an underground spirit week, capped off by a festive Halloween celebration. Here’s a recap of our themed days:
- Monday: Royalty Day
- Tuesday: Blackout
- Wednesday: Anything but a Cup
- Thursday: Halloween Costumes
- Friday: Wear Your Favorite Holiday
Enjoy the photos capturing the energy and excitement from a truly memorable week!

Counseling
We are very excited to welcome Amanda Blanchette to the Counseling Department! Mrs. Blanchette is the counselor for students with the last names L - Z. She is new to the Wayne Westland community. Before becoming a school counselor, she worked in college admissions and loves supporting students' paths in education! Thanks for welcoming her to the Adams Family!
The Counseling Department was thrilled to see how excited and engaged our 8th grade students
were at the Career Tech Field Trip! In early October, Ms. Lentz presented in all American
History classes regarding the opportunities skilled trades can offer our students as an excellent
career path. Ms. Lentz gave every 8th grader a copy of “Build Your Future: The Complete Guide
to a Skilled Trade Career.” We have a few extra copies in the Counseling office. If your 8th grade
student lost theirs or if your 6th or 7th grader would like a copy, please have them come to the
Counseling office. Ms. Lentz also briefly reviewed graduation requirements to earn a high school
diploma with all 8th grade students.
We would like to take this opportunity to recognize Veterans Day on November 11th. On behalf
of the staff at Adams, we want to thank every individual who has served and are currently
serving in the United States Military. Thank you for your service and for your commitment to
keeping us and our liberties safe. We are forever grateful!
6th grade
Math
6th grade is wrapping up our study of comparing and ordering positive and negative rational numbers. We are moving into graphing on the coordinate plane, measuring on the coordinate plane, and finding the area of polygons.
ELA
Students are continuing to work on their Personal Narratives, really focusing on story elements such as plot, characters, and setting. Students are engaged in the writing process through drafting, revising, and editing.
Social Studies
Students will continue their studies of the 5 Themes of Geography by wrapping up the theme: "Location". 6th graders have been working hard to practice using latitude and longitude coordinates to find specific places on a map (absolute location). We will soon move onto the theme of "Place". Students will take a look at the physical characteristics versus the human characteristics of different locations around the world.
Science
Students are ready to dive into measurement and investigate hands-on using scientific tools. We will also continue to create and interpret graphs.
Sixth graders are encouraged to join sports and/or clubs:
Clubs: Student Council, Pep Club, Newspaper, Bowling, etc.
Sports: Boys basketball is currently underway. Girls basketball begins in January - Google Classroom: brtrww5
Students must have a physical on file to participate.
Which instructional focus is your department committing to focusing on for this month? How is this used for students? 6th-grade students continue working with Clarifying Questions and Answering. Knowing how and when to ask clarifying questions can help in many situations by helping one understand what someone is saying to you. Regardless of one’s role, proper communication can have a direct impact on efficiency. It is a valuable skill in many areas of life.
Sixth grade teachers are also focusing on social emotional learning (SEL) which is a process that helps students develop skills to build relationships, make responsible decisions, and to manage emotions.
Fun in Science - “Water Drop Pumpkins”
Do oil and water mix? How about water and wax paper? What will happen when the water droplets evaporate?
How can the parents support at home learning/extension for this month?
Parents, please check in with your student about their classwork using Student/Parent connect.
Growth Mindset:
Please take the time to discuss with your child about having a positive growth mindset towards learning. Too much instructional time is lost due to redirecting students back toward learning. What this means is that students are required to come in prepared and on time with their materials: binder and pencil pouch. This ensures that learning can begin right at the bell with less interruptions and all students can be ready for success.
Art
As we welcome November, we’re excited to dive into a month filled with creativity and exploration! This month in our art classes, students will have the opportunity to engage in a variety of projects, including vibrant landscape paintings and innovative shoe design. Each class will encourage participants to experiment with different techniques and materials, sparking their imaginations and enhancing their skills.
In addition to these hands-on projects, our social-emotional learning (SEL) focus this month will be on bravery. We’ll emphasize the importance of stepping outside of comfort zones, trying new things, and embracing the learning process—even if it involves making mistakes. This growth mindset is essential for both personal development and artistic expression.
We look forward to a month filled with creativity, courage, and fun! Let’s make November a memorable experience in the art room!
Happy creating!
Check out Mr. Miller’s students in the sketching and planning stages, for their Tinker Hatfield inspired shoe sculptures!

Music
This month, Vocal students are learning to sing in different languages including French and Latin. Meanwhile, Instrumental Students are developing their sight-reading and audiation (understanding and hearing music in your head) abilities.
In mid-October, choir students performed their fall concert combined with the choir from Franklin Middle School. All classes continue to prepare for their winter concerts. The choir will perform on December 5 and the band and orchestra will perform on December 12. Both concerts are at 7pm at WMHS.
Students in all music classes will work with guest clinicians this semester. Choir students had their session in mid-October before their first concert, and instrumental students will have theirs in early December before their concert.
Please continue to encourage your students to practice at least 2.5 hours a week at home! Have them break up the practice into 15-30 minute sessions throughout the week.
