Sept. Week 3: Scientific Method & Investigation: Make Your Own Bouncy Balls!
Observation: I love to see how high bouncy balls can bounce!
Question: Can I make a bouncy ball that will bounce as high as the ceiling?
Create-Your-Own-Hypothesis!
IF _________ THEN _________ .
Materials:
1 TBSP Elmer’s White Glue
Food Coloring
½ tsp. Borax Powder (laundry aisle at department stores)
3 TBSP Cornstarch
4 TBSP Warm Water
2 Cups
Experiment:
In 1 cup, put in the warm water, cornstarch and Borax
In another cup or bowl, put the glue
Put several drops of food coloring into the glue and stir well
Stir your water/cornstarch/Borax mixture well and add to the glue
Stir until you have one glob
Take the glob out and roll it between your palms. It will be sticky at first, so keep a papertowl handy!
Once the stickiness is gone, you will have a bouncy ball - go ahead and bounce away!
Store in an empty plastic Easter eggs or in any small container. They will flatten over time, but just need to be re-rolled to regain their shape!
Results:
How high can you bounce your ball?
Take a picture of your experiment results and submit it to your teacher in SeeSaw!
Reflection:
What did you like about your bouncy ball? What would you do differently next time?

Puddle Free Playground
As we kickoff our fall playground fundraiser, here's a quick update on what we've done so far and where we're headed thanks to your generosity! In August, we spent about $3000 from last year's fundraising efforts to install a french drain around our wooden playground to improve drainage so it doesn't turn into a swamp everytime it rains. As you can see from yesterday's photo of our kindergartners, it works! Even after all of the much needed rain we received this week, our kids could still use it! Moving forward, our playground committee is working on adding new elements to both of our play areas and we're excited about the direction we're headed! Thanks again for your support in helping fund our efforts!
FALL FUNDRAISER
Inspire Award
MVES has an outstanding team of dedicated staff who go above and beyond to support and inspire our students every day. The RCPS Inspire Award is a recognition program that honors the exceptional teachers and staff within our school community. To celebrate their hard work, we encourage you to submit an online submission form. When filling out the nomination form, please explain why you are nominating this teacher or staff member for the Inspire Award. Please include specific details and examples of how this person has inspired you or your child and is deserving of this recognition. (If your nomination is selected, this is what you will read publicly at the School Board meeting.) Use the following link to submit your nomination.
Walk/Bike to School
Don't forget, every Tuesday and Thursday (rain or shine) is Walk/Bike to school! Deputy Custer (Our School’s Resource Officer) will be stationed at that intersection from 7:55-8:10am to help students cross Route 33 safely. We are planning to continue this until the weather turns in mid/late October.
September Is Attendance Awareness Month
As we continue to work together toward academic excellence, I want to emphasize the importance of consistent attendance in ensuring student success.
We know that regular attendance is one of the most critical factors in achieving academic growth. Every day counts, and each day missed can have a cumulative impact on your child’s learning. This year, we are encouraging all of our students to embrace the challenge of “Strive for Less Than"5"—
to not be out of school for more than five days throughout the entire year.
September is National School Attendance Awareness Month, and I have a special challenge for students and staff who don't miss any days in September. Please watch my video for more information!
Sincerely,
Larry Shifflett, Ed.D.
Division Superintendent
