Freshman Coastal Sweep Reflection
By Maryn Beggan
On October 4th, the entire freshman class had the opportunity to leave school for a field trip. We began by visiting stations around downtown Cohasset. Each station was informational, and I learned a lot from them! We learned about life in early Cohasset and other aspects of the town’s history. Once we were done with the stations, we got to eat lunch downtown, which was such a treat! After lunch, we got into groups to go clean different beaches in Cohasset. My group was assigned to Rocky Beach, and we had a ton of fun! Some of the boys in our group even went in the ocean! Overall, the field trip was a great experience. We all got to have fun while also being able to contribute to bettering our community at the same time.
Robotics Team
By Christian Bunge
For anybody interested in technology and coding, the robotics club is the place for you! You may have recently seen the Robotics Team presenting at our school’s club fair, where the robot was available for anyone to drive. Every year, our school’s First Tech Challenge Team, the CoBots, designs and builds a bot to compete in a challenge at the intersection of mechanical design and software engineering. The program is designed around real-world problems in robotics, so that the things students design may have a purpose in the wider world. If you would like to know how the computers and robots omnipresent in modern society work, feel free to stop by one of the Robotics Club’s meetings. The club convenes most Tuesdays at utility in Mr. Sasso’s room. However, some after-school meetings may be expected as the competitions in January and February grow near.
Cohasset Football’s Victory into Homecoming Dance
By Molly Campbell
On Friday night, September 27th, Cohasset Football delivered a crazy win against Nauset, with a final score of 29-28. The game came down to a dramatic finish, with Gus Greene charging into the end zone for a touchdown with just 53 seconds left on the clock. As the tension increased, Will McLoughlin intercepted a pass in the end zone with only 10 seconds remaining, and the student section went crazy.
Fans were fully engaged in the game, cheering loudly throughout. The excitement carried over to the dance, where a DJ kept the energy high with an awesome playlist. Adding to the fun, Cohasset’s field hockey team and the girls soccer team faced off in a dance-off, with the field hockey girls coming out with the win. It was a night to remember, filled with exciting school spirit.
PSATs
By Charlotte Gallagher
On Friday, October 4th, students in grades 10 and 11 took the PSAT. PSAT stands for Preliminary SAT, a test that plays an important role in post-high school plans, especially college applications. The digital assessment consists of two sections each for math and reading and is timed for everyone. An interesting thing about the PSAT and SAT is that students across the country take essentially the same test during a specific testing window. Unlike the MCAS, there is no writing included in the PSAT, only multiple choice. If you took the PSAT, you can access your score by downloading the College Board app called BigFuture School and signing in with your College Board account.
Cross Country Team
By Jack Kearney
The Cohasset Cross Country team is winding down with excitement as the team finishes their final meets. The South Shore League meet, which featured nine schools on the South Shore, took place on October 24th at the Wrentham Developmental Center. While Cohasset Cross Country may not have placed highly in terms of team ranking, the team had nine out of thirteen runners achieve a personal record in the 5k. The league meet was followed by a dual meet against Middleboro, initially scheduled for before leagues but postponed due to weather. The meet against Middleboro resulted in a close loss. The 2.9 mile course proved quite confusing and challenging with a lot of turns and steep hills. Cohasset Cross Country is not finished yet! Cohasset will run at the Wrentham Developmental Center once more on November 9th for Massachusetts Divisionals.
Halloween Knockout Tournament
By Quinn Kearney
Over the years, Cohasset High School has proven that it has spirit and enthusiasm, and Halloween 2024 was no exception. On Thursday, October 31, students across all grades arrived in costume to celebrate the holiday and make their day a little more festive. The person with the best costume from each grade was recognized for their effort and deemed “best dressed”- a title that came with candy! In addition to dressing up in fun costumes, Student Council had an event planned: a Halloween Knockout Tournament.
To encourage participation and school spirit, students who dressed up were eligible and encouraged to compete in the knockout tournament during utility. This tournament featured both students and teachers, all wearing a costume to make the competition more exciting and Halloween themed. Students filled the bleachers after picking a candy from the assortment at the door and watched in anticipation as the tournament began. As two simultaneous games of knockout eventually merged into one, the numbers dwindled until only two remained: freshmen Tighe Carter and Joey Pannozzo. A fight for 1st place left Joey Pannozzo victorious, and he was rewarded with a bag of candy. Everyone left the gym with candy in hand, satisfied after a suspenseful game of knockout. The Halloween Knockout Tournament was a creative and exciting way to celebrate Halloween at Cohasset High School, and students are hopeful that this tradition will continue in the future!
AP US Field Trip
By Grace Kiernan
On October 23 and 31, the AP US History classes went on a field trip to the Massachusetts Historical Society in Boston. We left at around 9 am and spent the day learning about primary sources and examining documents related to the Revolutionary War. The classes are currently learning about the formation of the United States, including the Revolutionary War, the signing of the Declaration of Independence, and the U.S. Constitution. It was very interesting to look at primary sources and real-life accounts from this period. It was also a very nice day out, so the classes got to walk around Derby St and get lunch afterward.
The Spanish Club
By Mia Peeples
The Spanish Club meets every other week on Monday during utility in Senora Nelson’s room, which is room 177. These meetings always have snacks, sweet treats, and a variety of fun activities. At meetings, Spanish Club members participate in activities such as painting famous Spanish artists, playing Loteria, playing Spanish hangman, playing Spanish Pictionary, and watching Spanish movies. The Spanish Club also participates in a variety of events throughout the year. Among these events are the annual Multicultural Night and the Pulsera Project. Our main event, the Pulsera Project, is a cultural exchange program where Spanish Club members are responsible for selling bracelets to fundraise money for artists in Central America. This exchange program allows Cohasset students to experience some of the Spanish culture, while also raising funds for Central American artists. If any of these meeting activities or events sound of interest to you, do not hesitate to reach out to Senora Nelson and join the google classroom! The code is bxymdwj.
Visioning Committee
By Fiona Rennie
This past month, I had the privilege of taking part in a visioning committee composed of select students, teachers, parents, district faculty members, and community representatives that met across three meetings to discuss and plan our vision for the future Cohasset Middle High School building. Although a new school building has not been approved by the state, administrators have been working with architects from AI3 and education planning specialists from MLP Integrated Design to plan ahead for what the new school building may look like.
Across these meetings, committee members were able to debate and discuss our current building and learning practices, the building we would like to see in the future, and how the new building can reflect our vision of what teaching and learning could look like at Cohasset. These discussions were based on the broader topics of the learner, learning, teaching, and the learning environment. For example, in the first meeting we discussed how different ages learn differently and how the building might reflect that to suit different ages of learners.
Additionally, we looked at different aspects of new school models, voted on if it would be something we would want to implement in the new school, and discussed what we liked and disliked about the models. This discussion fostered an inspired debate over whether or not we would want to see a traditional library setup, where the library is a dedicated enclosed space, like the learning commons we have now, or if we would like to implement a hybrid model, where the books are scattered on shelves throughout the school.
Overall, other building aspects that were discussed were outdoor learning spaces, open learning spaces, areas for collaboration, and organization of the building. In conclusion, the meetings led to important discussions of what the community would like to see in the future Cohasset Middle High School, and hopefully these plans will successfully be implemented in the new building.
Girls Field Hockey Part I
By Stephanie Williams
The girls field hockey team has been on fire, playing their hardest and getting many wins even against difficult teams. This year's coaches, Coach G and Coach Simon, have done an amazing job motivating and teaching these girls not only how to play, but also how to build a strong sense of community with each other. I sat down with one of the team’s four captains, Caroline Struzziero, and asked her to share her thoughts on this year.
“We are really pumped about the season so far. Our team really put in the work in the off season and it’s definitely paid off. We have some big games coming up, so it’ll be exciting to see how we do against those teams! A goal for the team is definitely just getting to states. We are 100% capable, and we’ve got so many talented athletes. I think of all years, this year we can go really far. Super excited to see how far this team goes!”
Although the varsity team has already experienced many wins so far in this season, CHS fans are excited to see how the rest of the fall will play out. Like Caroline stated, the team has some challenging opponents that they will face in the upcoming weeks, but with the support of the school and each other, these girls will hopefully have the opportunity to go to the State Championships. If interested, show your support by stopping by at a game. The game schedule can be found at the Cohasset Athletics website. Good luck to the team in these last few weeks!
Girls Field Hockey Part II
By Alexis Sherbertes
As the regular season comes to an end, Cohasset field hockey has had a very successful season. Our overall record for the 2024 season is 12-4-3 which ranked us eight in division four but resulted in a seventh seed for the tournament due to a win against Falmouth. It is ideal for the team to be the seventh seed because it gives us an opportunity to go much farther in the tournament based on how the bracket is set up. We had a few very challenging games against both Sandwich and Monomoy. These Cape teams are very strong and have beat almost all of their opponents by seven or more goals. However, we were able to hold both teams to only two goals. This was a huge accomplishment for our offensive and defensive players. As a team we have been able to beat other teams by a large margin and win very close games that changed the outcome of our postseason tournament. We are all looking forward to playoffs with hopes of going to the state championship.
Hurricane Milton
By Libby Struzziero
Hurricane Milton made landfall on the coast of western Florida as a Category 3 hurricane. It arrived at Siesta Key, Florida on the night of October 9, 2024. It was predicted to be one of the worst storms of the century and was expected to land as a Category 5, but decreased to a Category 3 upon making landfall. It moved from the Gulf Coast of Florida to the Atlantic Coast. It was also predicted that the hurricane would cause $175 billion of damage, but in reality it will end up costing the state of Florida $36 billion in damage. Many citizens tried to evacuate, but the roads were crowded so a lot of people stayed put. The storm caused at least 24 deaths and even more injuries. There are many efforts to help the citizens of Florida and you can contribute in many different ways.
Teacher Feature - Coach A
By Malone Yemini and Myla Pimpare
Found in the history department, a particular teacher who stands out for his kindness, commitment, and intelligence, is Coach A. With his energetic and enriching personality, Coach A has made a lasting impact on students and athletes for years.
With a passion for the subject, Coach A has taught U.S. History 1 and 2, along with classes on the Holocaust and Human Behavior. Coach A’s challenging teaching style has inspired and empowered many young minds at Cohasset High School, making him beloved by many.
Not only is he known for his teaching abilities but Coach A is also the head coach of the football team. Having played through high school and college himself, Coach A has a love for the sport. He uses that passion to inspire his athletes, building the strongest team possible. He loves football for the bond it creates among the players and the fact that it’s a true team sport.
Coach A chose to teach for its uniqueness and variety as a career. Disliking the idea of a typical office job, Coach A was drawn to the schedule and ability to meet so many new people offered by teaching. It also provides a chance to combine athletics and education, two of his passions.
He ended up at Cohasset due to the opportunity to both teach the classes he is passionate about and coach the football team. Although intimidating at first, the tight-knit community of Cohasset has become his favorite part of this town. He is drawn to the supportive people in Cohasset and strong bonds formed by locals. Coach A’s main piece of advice for highschoolers is to challenge yourself. He encourages students to try something new despite fears of it being too difficult.
Outside of teaching and coaching, Coach A enjoys a variety of activities. He loves spending time with his wife and kids. They often ski at Jay Peak in the winter. He also enjoys surfing. Recently, he has been more interested in reading as a way to wind down. Overall, Coach A is an inspiring and multi-talented member of the Cohasset High School community. He has made a lasting impact on many students and athletes. He enriches the minds of this school everyday, and for that students and staff are very grateful.
