DMS Miniboat Update
June 4, 2024
First stop Cape Cod
Special thanks to Mr. Strazzulo (DMS School Psychologist) who agreed to bring DMS Anita back home. He was able to meet and interview Jim Manning (retired oceanographer from NOAA). Check out the three minute clip.
Mr. Provost's Spanish Classes
Mr. Provost has been engaging his Spanish classes in Anita's journey. Each day he asks his students ¿Dónde está DMS Anita hoy? - Where is DMS Anita today? and then they look up her location to see where she has traveled to. Yesterday she was in front of our school outside the office charging up her solar panels. One of his students asked Mr. Provost where Anita was before he could ask the class, and another student, responding in disbelief, stated she was out in front of the school!
The exchange was:
Me-¿Dónde está DMS Anita hoy? Where is DMS Anita today?
one student - Anita está en el océano. - Anita is in the ocean.
Me - No, hoy no está en el océano. - No, today she is not in the ocean.
another student - Anita estó en Falmouth. - Anita is in Falmouth.
Me - No, hoy no está en Falmouth. - No, today she is not in Falmouth.
another student - Anita está en Dudley. - Anita is in Dudley.
Me. Sí, es correcto. ¿Dónde está en Dudley? - Yes, that is correct. Where is she in Dudley?
another student - Anita está enfrente de la oficina - afuera. - Anita is in front of the office outside.
They had all just walked past her outside on their way in from lunch!
Relaunch Plan
The URI Graduate School of Oceanography (GSO) will be relaunching Anita. The RV Endeavor will be leaving port on Friday June 7 heading to the shelf break ~100nmi away with some very special passengers. Not only will Cassie (our contact at Educational Passages) be aboard to help with the send off, but a handful of R.I. educators have been selected to become part of a scientific research team for this trip.
At DMS, we are working to quickly put together a plan for getting Anita to URI. Details will be emerging shortly.
Spectrum News - Worcester
We've been contacted by one of the reports from Spectrum News. They've been following our journey (Thanks to Debbie LaPlaca) and have requested to speak with 3 students. Our plan would be to have the rest of the crew sitting in the background. We asked the crew last Friday who would like to be interviewed. If you would not like your crew member to be on camera at all, please reach out to me ASAP. I will be sure the follow your wishes. We are expecting the news team one day this week.
