A message from the Principal and Assistant Principal
Hi CVE Families,
Thank you for partnering with us, working together as a team will help our kids achieve great things!! CVE students have found their stride and are discovering their best selves!.
Beginning of the Year Data
As the CVE staff, we have reviewed both reading and math data from CMAS as well as our beginning of the year assessments in DIBELs and iREADY Reading and Math. While we do have some celebrations, we continue to have large gaps within both reading and math. Teachers are using research based intervention programs to support both reading and math achievement. We have an intervention time that is based specifically on each individual student’s needs, WIN (What I Need), in addition, interventions are also done within the regular classroom.
Your partnership with us, in your child’s learning, plays an important role in their overall success and growth. The homework this year will be focused on reading and math fluency to provide additional practice as we work toward increasing these basic skills to be able to work on more complex tasks. You should have received information about your specific grade level homework expectations. Please reach out to your child’s homeroom teacher for additional information.
As always, CVE will remain focused on the vision of developing happy, high achieving students and staff!
VOCABULARY PARADE
On October 31st, we will celebrate our annual Vocabulary Day. To increase our students’ vocabulary, we’re asking all students to add a word to their costume or build their costume around a fun vocabulary word. For example, if your child already has his Spiderman costume, he’d just need to add a sign with a word such as “Brave.” Perhaps your child wants to do something more creative. How about dressing up as the word, “puzzled” and then creating a costume that represents that word? Remember, we will not allow violent or gory costumes. We look forward to this fun event! Parents will be invited to see the parade and our teachers will reach out with specific times about classroom parties as the day gets closer.
PARENT/TEACHER CONFERENCES
We know Parent-teacher conferences play a significant role in enhancing your child's education. PTC’s are an effective way for parents as well as teachers to discuss how your child has been doing academically in school. Our goal is to have 100% of our families participate in Parent/Teacher Conferences which will take place October 16th and 25th. You will be receiving contact from your child’s teacher to schedule your conference time. We are excited to partner with you!
As the administrative team, we can’t thank you enough for believing in CVE as the place to share your children every day.

Happy Fall. As we approach colder temperatures, please remind your students to dress appropriately and remember to LABEL all their belongings. As the afternoons get warmer, kids leave their jackets on the playground and it is easier to get their stuff back to them if things are labeled. We just elected our 5th grade Student Council and we are excited to promote CVE activities. Our members are:
Luke Bethell, Avi Yost, Bella Williams, Belle Jurmu, Lisandro, Azarahia, Deydani, Peyton Williams, Mandy, Kamille Case, Jamilet Velazquez Carrasco, Abby, Juliet Wittenberg, Ailed, and Ellie Ryan.
In Character Education, Kindergarten and 1st grade are working on becoming mindful learners and learning how to advocate for themselves. In 2nd grade students are learning how to identify their own emotions and work on skills to help regulate themselves. 3rd grade students are learning how to identify what others are feeling by noticing body language and looking for facial expressions. This builds empathy and caring skills. 4th and 5th grade will focus on assertiveness skills. It helps the students ask for what they need in a calm, firm and respectful voice.
Totes for Hope has begun. It is a program run through the River Center that gives families 6-7 non perishable food items weekly and is distributed on Wednesdays. If you are a family that could use the supplemental food, please contact me and I can get you signed up. Parents and guardians, please label your students jackets and coats, especially as we enter colder mornings and hot afternoons in the fall season. 4th and 5th grade are working on
If your family needs emotional support or other types of assistance, contact me, Amy Chabin, at 970-665-7764 or achabin@garfieldre2.net.

PE Notes
This year has started off great! The kids have been doing well with remembering their PE shoes and have been excited everyday to learn and be active. 3rd-5th grades did a great job with their fitness testing. We have been learning about the 5 Parts of Fitness and learning how different games and activities can work on different parts of fitness. 1st and 2nd grade worked hard on practicing throwing and catching for a few weeks and we have now transitioned into learning about being active and exercising using music. Kindergarten has done really well learning how to play and be safe in the gym. We play lots of different tag games to practice good spatial awareness and being safe when running around others in large groups. We have been learning about different ways to move around the gym as well.

We are also learning how to type on a keyboard. We use typing.com and it is free so your student can access it at home. It takes lots of practice to learn to type and learning home row is so important.

Music Notes
Hello families,
Hope you are doing well! Our music classroom has been bustling with sounds of rhythm and singing. The instruments are a huge part of our curriculum. I have dusted off the xylophones, drums, egg shakers, and rhythm sticks for all students and this has been helpful to learn the rhythm and then translate it to an instrument to make music. We have started this year with the “BIG Questions” ; these are group activities that get the students excited about learning music. Then we move to a musical video to get our feet tapping, hands clapping and bodies moving. I give the students ideas on what to look for in these videos and then we uncover how music can impact our lives. All of the music standards are being covered and the expectation is to participate in class. We are learning the notes and developing our singing skills as well. It has been a pleasure to have each student in music class and I’m excited to keep discovering how to reach each student through music. Performance dates to remember: 3rd Grade Oct. 26, 4th Grade Nov. 9th, 5th Grade Dec. 14th, 2nd Grade March 14th, and 1st Grade May 9th. Please check DOJO for any additional information.
Musically yours,
Jennetta Howell
