Wamsley Elementary School Newsletter - November 2020
Important Dates
November 23rd - 27th - Thanksgiving Break (No School)
December 1st 4:00pm - Virtual PTAC Meeting
From the Principal
We made history by having our first ever virtual snow day. Thank you for having your children participate in the day of learning and some snow fun. As a reminder, we are having virtual snow days this year because we started school a week late and we need to ensure that we meet the required state guidelines for student contact days. Virtual snow days allow us to avoid having to attend school during our week long Thanksgiving break, or extending the school year in June. So, watch the weather and please know that if we should have a large snow storm we will have another day of virtual learning and fun in the snow while we are all at home.
Speaking of holidays, we know that some of you are planning to travel during the holidays. We understand this need, and would appreciate it if you could let us know if you plan to travel outside the state or country. This will allow us to help prepare any needed technology and advise you of current regulations that may be in place at the time of your travel and upon your return. We ask that you be extra vigilant in monitoring your child's symptoms as we head into the holiday season. If you do travel, please feel free to take a day or two to keep your child home to watch for any symptoms that may arise.
As a result of the Garfield County Public Health regulations about when to stay home from work or school (please see the document from the Health Room below), many of our students are staying home with minor symptoms. Yet, they are able to access their daily educational routine here at school. We believe this is an important and valuable opportunity for kids to participate in daily learning while they are staying home. However, unless your child is home with symptoms or you have spoken with us about being quarantined, it is imperative that your child be AT SCHOOL. This alternative online learning is designed and intended only for students who must stay home with symptoms or have been quarantined. It is not an optional mode of learning simply because your child does not want to come to school. We sincerely appreciate all your help and support in making sure your child receives the best education possible.
Please mark your calendars for Thursday, November 19th. We will be planning a special virtual family Thanksgiving celebration. More details to come! Also, please see the Thanksgiving meals flyer below for special meals on this day.
In closing, I would like to express my sincerest gratitude for all your support, encouragement, and belief in the Wildcat family. Because of you, we are in school and thriving here at Wamsley. Enjoy your time together during this upcoming holiday season. As always, if you have any questions please let us know.

Preschool
Hello Wamsley Preschool Families. The kids had such a fun time learning about buildings, however, we are on to our next study, which will be clothing! We will be talking about how clothes are made, where they are made, who wears uniforms for what jobs, and what clothes you wear during what season. We will have a dress up day, where your child can wear their finest/fanciest clothing, or even cultural attire. This is one of my favorite studies! I hope your child enjoys it as well. Please remember to pack extra clothing in your child's backpack, as well as dress them up warm, we will be playing outside. Thank you for your continued support!
Kindergarten
Hello kinder families! Happy November! We have started blending letters together to read words in kindergarten! We have added the letters A, D, and S to the letters that we know how to read. Keep counting with your kinder, we want to be able to count to 100 all on her own by May. Ask your kinder what they are learning about in EE. Thank you for participating in your Kinder's success in kindergarten!
First Grade
Here’s what we’re working on this month. In social studies, students have been creating simple maps. In the coming weeks, they will be investigating different types of communities and how they are the same and different. In writing, students have been working on opinion and narrative writing. They will continue to work on writing complete sentences that include letters formed correctly, sound spelling, correct capitalization, and correct end punctuation. In math, students are working on adding and subtracting numbers within ten. Students are also learning about place value. You can help at home by assisting your child in completing the weekly homework packet and returning it to school. Thanks for your continued support.
Second Grade
Third Grade
Hello third grade families, we had another awesome month here at Wamsley. In writing we have been learning how to write informative essays. Making sure to include main ideas and key details to support our topics. In social studies we are learning about government and what our local government does for us. In math class, your students are learning the basics of multiplication and the many strategies to solve them. This month in third grade we even had our first virtual snow day which was a great success. Thank you to all the parents for your help and support. Please continue to practice reading 20 minutes every night and work on those math facts.

Happy November Fifth Grade Families! We had a wonderful time meeting with you in October for student led conferences! We are grateful to have had the opportunity to be able to meet you face to face even though it was online!
Here's what we're up to in November! In Math, Fifth grade is gearing up to learn all about fractions! We are learning what an equivalent fraction is, we are comparing fractions with unlike denominators, and we are adding and subtracting fractions and mixed numbers! Ask your kids about fractions at home and keep practicing multiplication facts to keep it fresh! In Science we are learning all about the solar system and gravity! In Social Studies we have just finished learning about Exploration in America and Colonialism! We have been learning all about American Democracy and what an Election is! We are excited to be kick-starting November with our Cookie Elections! Ask your child what the BEST cookie to vote for would be! In EE, we continue to have fun learning about the human nervous, digestive and respiratory system, and getting outside as much as we can before the snow continues to roll in! Happy November and hope you all enjoy your Thanksgiving Break!

Wamsley Shirt Thursdays!
PTAC will be sending home new t-shirt order forms soon! In the past, the kids could get a free bag of popcorn on Thursdays if they wore their Wamsley shirt. This year, to comply with COVID regulations, the PTAC has purchased candy and prizes for the kids to choose from on “Wear Your Wamsley Shirt Thursdays”!
