Development Competition Team - DAY 2
SEASON HAS STARTED
Do you know drop off and pick up times? I add this one because I have to admit...I had Ken Gaskell (Past President) waiting for me our first year wondering why I would ever leave my little guy alone during the lunch hour. I was clueless.....we moved from a mountain that had a full day program for kids 3 and up. So make sure you know when your program starts and when it finishes. AND (Wade can attest) even the best of us (ME) have #firstdaychaos #wherearemypoles? #whatdoyoumeanican'twearshorts
Dress them in layers: It is really important to make sure as the weather dips kids have layers. Buffs are essential when it's cold to keep them from getting frostbite...yep that comes from experience too.
Lunch Room Rules: There is no supervision during the lunch hour for the full day programs. Make sure your children know what is expected - clean up after themselves, respect others and hang with friends (all ski pants should be pulled up - suspenders are our friends). :)
Volunteers are needed: Want to join in on the fun? Come out and volunteer....because no matter what we are doing - we're having fun (you have to be there to see it). Watch for a weekly email from Barb Hall (Bobbi's mom) - our VP and Volunteer Coordinator. She will aim to have a member email out by Tuesday every week letting you know where, when and what we are up to for the coming weekend. There is always something to do, it just depends on weather so stay posted.
Silver Star Light Up - Who can help this Saturday (that's tomorrow) :)
Silver Star Freestyle will also be joining in the festivities with a booth at the official kick off to the festive season at Silver Star. Come, join in the fun and help us at our table - if you can make it, please contact Nicole Bush 250 540 7260 or catch me on the hill tomorrow.
There will be entertainment galore with crafts, games, sleigh rides, singing and so much more. Warm up by the fire with a hot chocolate or toasted marshmallows. With a special appearance from Santa Clause himself this will be a night to remember for your whole family. If you haven’t yet started your Christmas shopping what better place than Silver Star’s wonderful boutiques and souvenir stores?
Date: Saturday, December 5th
Time: 5:00 pm to 8:00 pm (TBC)
Price: FREE
Kal Tire Gift Certificates
The 2015 fall training program brought the biggest participation of any dryland program I have seen with the Silver Star Freestyle Ski Club. We had over 60 freestyle club members join in and participate in bouncing and dryland activities locally. In addition, the club is having an impact in the community by offering the trampoline experience to school and after school groups. In total an additional 70 children and teens took part in learning the fundamentals of trampoline. The Club invested over $7000 in trampoline equipment this season and it is predicted to have at least a decade’s worth of life. SS Freestyle has developed some amazing community partners including School District 22, V-Learn, Maven Lane and the Greater Vernon Recreations Services. We thank our corporate partners for their valued support. The tramps are now stored away in a Big Steel Box at the DCT Chambers trucking yard. It takes some exceptional people to host these programs. Special thanks to Nicole Bush, Rod Peters, Kate Tooke, Claudia Sorensen, Brent Kisilevich, Sebastien Berthiaume, Isaiah Peters, Zach Fenn, Connie
Henderson, Jamieson-Gordon Mason, Elena Gaskell, Crispin Lipscomb and Maven Lane staff. For our competition programs we still have the need to head out of town to the Okanagan Gymnastics Center in Rutland on Sunday nights. Competitive team skiers trained in Rutland with Paul Passek, Graham Pollock and Jesse Jankens. The facility is amazing and we are very lucky to have the opportunity to train in such a great environment.
Winter Is Here
November brought us some amazing snow! Programs are officially getting kicked off with the Competitive Development Team, The Freeski Team and Freestyle Teams all skiing together this past weekend. On the first day there were plenty of rails, some great free-skiing, some fun jumps and awesome sunshine! This week we are setting getting ready for the Competitive Freestylerz program and its season kick off. This program is great for skiers ready for black diamond runs, skiing the mini moguls course and hitting “medium features” in the Rock Star Park.
Jumps and Bumps
I would like to thank everyone for registering for J&B’s this season. As of December 1 we have over 70 registrants. These numbers are encouraging as the Silver Star Freestyle Ski Club strives to develop a program with the focus of providing and environment of safety, fun and learning. If you know someone that is interested that is not signed up please encourage them to sign up NOW for Saturday afternoons, Sunday afternoons or Sunday mornings. Saturday Morning is now full. If you are set on Saturday mornings please hop on the waiting list. We are striving to fit everyone in where they want to go. Anyone with questions can email me directly (contact info below). Jumps and Bumps Christmas Camp
dates are Dec 19-21 or Dec 27-29
G-Team
Taylor Weixl is back to head up the G-Team. Her sidekicks Laura Chatham and Kyra Londos will run two different age groups this year. 11 and up or 8-11. This program runs for eleven sessions and provides an all-girls environment to build confidence in the girls skiing all mountain, moguls, and park terrain. Last season some of the girls entered competitions and hit the Katal Air Bag. From time to time we will invite girls from competitive programs to ski alongside the athletes and coaches and demonstrate their skills and energy for skiing. Elena Gaskell, Connie Henderson and Jamieson-Gordon Mason are all on the list to join in for some fun! G-team has a 14 day or 11 day option this year for those that can’t get enough freestyle fun in a girls only environment.
We want to thank the community for its support with advertising, supporting sports and working together to have world leading training ground for freestyle skiers. The Silver Star Freestyle Club is working hard to ensure that as we grow we continue to provide a safe, fun, and positive environment for our kids. We strive to develop life-long skiers and future world champions and Olympians that will inspire all of us.
Coaching
It takes a great crew of coaches to develop a world leading freestyle club. We are actively training our coaches at the moment. In December we will be hosting the Can Freestyle “Club Coach” and “Technical Ski Module 1. There is still space available if anyone is interested. Click here to get registered NOW.
Go to www.ssfreestyle.com to get registered for a program this season. Contact wade@ssfreestyle.com if you have questions.
Katal Air Bag update
This season the Silver Star Freestyle Club and member guests have exclusive use of the Katal Air Bag. We did some amazing summer work that will benefit all club members at some point in their development. Anyone that wants to use the Air Bag will need to have a membership. We are shooting to have the air bag and air site open to ALL club members on Sundays starting January. This will be free to anyone in an existing program. Donations will be accepted for those who are members and are not
currently in a freestyle program.
TRY FREESTYLE
The Silver Star Freesyle Ski Club, BC Freestyle Ski Association and its partners have a program for kids ages 8 and up to "Try Freestyle" skiing. If you are an experienced skier and want to learn more about "Freestyle" in a fun and safe environment at your local ski area this is the perfect opportunity for you to "Try Freestyle".
We will be running Try Freestyle Sessions at Silver Star throughout early ski season. Our expert, CFSA-trained coaches will provide the younger kids with an experience of what it's like to be a freestyle skier and athlete. Our goal is to teach a safe and fun way of learning how to become a life long skier.
These Try Freestyle sessions are aimed at athletes who are considering joining either Jumps & Bumps program or our Freestylerz program, and are also a great way to assess which program will suit your child.

Coaches Corner - Who is that awesome skiier and where did they come from?
Paul Passek - Competiton Development Team Head Coach
After getting to hang out with Paul these last couple of years I wanted you all to know how awesome he is. Paul grew up in Toronto, Ontario where he started to ski probably when he was 2. Believe it or not Ontario has some ski resorts, one of which he spent most of his time at, Horseshoe Resort (20 minutes past Barrie). It was nicknamed “the poo” as in Horse Poo – and Paul says it was legendary. So many awesome skiers came from that little resort - Sarah Burke even came out of there, they had such a super strong freestyle program. Believe it or not, Paul was actually in the racing club for 3 years when his parents finally forced him into freestyle skiing. After that first year he never looked back….he was apparently pretty good at moguls! He went on to compete with the Southern Ontario Regional Team and next to the Ontario Provincial Moguls Team.
In November 2010 Paul moved to Whistler and skied park for the entire winter. What does a guy do when he needs to go to University? He chooses one near his favourite ski hills! Off to UBCO so he could head up to Big White and Whistler on weekends. He loved Silver Star because he’d spent so much time there on family vacations and competing (Junior Nationals and the Canadian Series). Summertime rolled around and he found himself back in Whistler working at the water ramps – somehow the mountains kept calling. That summer he was asked to coach at Silver Star……the rest is history. Well…..not really – this May he graduated from UBCO with a Degree in Business Management. But for the moment though…. Skiing & Coaching is Paul’s life and he's looking to keep moving up within the ski industry.
When I asked him, “What do you want to be when you grow up”…..he answered, “I am grown up”. Paul you're amazing and we are so lucky to have you at Silver Star Coaching our kids!
Here is a little bit of my SUPER serious interview with him.
1. How lucky are you and why?
I am lucky enough to ski for a living in the winter. So I guess you could say I am living my dream as a professional skier!

I’d use them to cut myself bigger tips.

I’m a hunter – I go get em - for Sure

Leatherman, flint, a friend

Harvest Crunch because that’s what’s in my pantry right now.
7. Do you believe in the abominable snowman?
Yes he probably lives at Silver Star
8. Why is a tennis ball fuzzy?
Because it hurts less when you get hit by something fuzzy
9. How honest are you?

13. How does the internet work?
Well there’s these chunks of information called packets that get sent through the http protocol…these are the letters that start the websites and they fly around in space to make the internet work.
14. If there was a movie produced about your life, who would play you and why?
Leonardo DiCaprio because if he played me he’d probably finally win an Oscar.

In Canada? It’s everything but green I’m pretty sure.

I gave my roommate Aisha a banana the other day.
