April Newsletter

A NOTE FROM SUPERINTENDENT DR. DAVID CHRISTOPHER
Dear WCASD Community,
As we approach the final stretch of the school year, we are focused on finishing strong while laying the groundwork for an even brighter future. Across WCASD, our staff is engaging in thoughtful collaboration, expressing what we believe as a district, strengthening the connections between our mission and our daily work, and focusing on how we can continue to engage students in meaningful learning.
This work is not easy, but it is essential. And it is not done alone. Our families and community members are key partners in shaping the future of WCASD. Through the Comprehensive Plan process, ongoing feedback opportunities, and the upcoming Portrait of a Graduate initiative, your voices help ensure that we remain a district that not only educates but truly inspires.
The weeks ahead will be busy, filled with events, celebrations, and moments that remind us why we do this work. It takes all of us, educators, families, students, and community members, working together to keep our focus where it matters most: on creating the best possible future for our students. Thank you for being part of this journey with us.
I’ll see you as we walk the West Chester way together!

Exploring the U.S. Through Books for Read Across America Week
Exton Elementary's librarian, Ms. Carlin, took the Eagles on an exciting literary journey in celebration of Read Across America Week!
Students began by learning about the significance of the week and why we celebrate it. Then, they "traveled" across the United States by reading books from different regions, filling out their maps as they explored new places.
Creating Thrills in Physics Class
East High School’s Physics 1 Honors students showcased their creativity and problem-solving skills by designing and building model roller coasters.
They applied physics principles to craft their rides - presenting their designs to judges while sharing their strategies and challenges.

APRIL IS FOR APPRECIATION
April is a month filled with appreciation for the many incredible staff members who help our schools thrive. This month, we extend our heartfelt thanks to our Assistant Principals, Paraprofessionals, Librarians, Library Aides, and Administrative Professionals, each playing a vital role in supporting our students, colleagues, and school communities.
In the spirit of recognition, we also celebrate our March WCASD Way Makers, whose dedication and impact embody the very best of WCASD. Their commitment to educating, inspiring, and leading is felt across our district, and we are grateful for their contributions.
Please join us in showing appreciation for these exceptional individuals who keep our schools moving forward!
MARCH BOARD MEETING: SHARING THE FUN
At last month’s board meeting, Riley and Clara from Westtown-Thornbury Elementary School led the salute to the flag and shared updates on all the exciting things happening at their school.
They highlighted Career Day, where students explored future career paths and heard from local professionals in exciting fields. They also shared their enthusiasm for school spirit days and creative, hands-on projects in WTE’s Design Lab. Thank you, Riley and Clara, for representing your school and giving us a glimpse into the engaging learning experiences at WTE!

QUICK QUESTION FROM US TO YOU!
Who's made the biggest impact in your child’s school year?
PORTRAIT OF A GRADUATE COMING SOON!
What does it mean to prepare students for success in a rapidly changing world? This spring, WCASD will launch the Portrait of a Graduate process, an opportunity for our community to come together and define the skills and competencies that will empower our students for the future.
This collaborative effort will engage educators, students, families, and community members in shaping a shared vision for deeper learning and long-term success. Stay tuned for more details on how you can be part of this important conversation!
INSPIRING FUTURE LEADERS DURING WOMEN'S HISTORY MONTH
Fern Hill Elementary students had the opportunity to hear from a diverse group of accomplished women during this year’s Women’s History Month Career Fair.
From Data Engineers and Police Officers to Navy Pilots, these inspiring role models shared their journeys, challenges, and valuable advice. Their stories encouraged students to dream big, work hard, and believe in the endless possibilities for their futures.
WALKING IN THEIR SHOES: WCASD LEADERS EXPERIENCE A DAY AS STUDENTS
What’s the best way to understand the student experience? Step into their world for a day! WCASD leaders recently took on the challenge of shadowing students across the district, gaining firsthand insight into daily life in our schools.
These experiences help our leaders stay connected to students' daily journeys, ensuring they make informed decisions that support learning and growth.
Director of Technology, John McGowan
...became a 2nd grader at Fern Hill Elementary, immersing himself in math, reading, and recess fun (though getting up from the floor wasn’t quite as easy as he remembered!).
Assistant Superintendent of Secondary, James Conley
...took on the schedule of an East High School student, diving into physics, tackling U.S. history, and securing a debatable victory in Sports PE.
Director of Elementary Education, Sara Missett
...spent the day as an East Bradford Elementary student, joining Math March Madness, experiencing classroom learning, and even riding the bus!
EAST HIGH SCHOOL HOSTS 5TH ANNUAL CODING CONTEST AT WCU!
East High School held its 5th Annual Coding Contest at West Chester University, bringing together teams from 16 high schools to put their programming skills to the test! Students raced against the clock to tackle complex coding challenges, showcasing their problem-solving and computational thinking abilities.
The competition was fierce, but every participant showed incredible perseverance and determination! A huge thank you to our WCASD staff and students for organizing this fantastic event, and to our sponsors, West Chester University and Venerable, for making it all possible.
PEIRCE MIDDLE SCHOOL BASKETBALL GAME SCORES BIG
Peirce Middle School’s Student vs. Faculty Basketball Game was a slam dunk! The afternoon was packed with friendly competition, exciting half-court shots, and even a cupcake-eating contest. But the real win? Every dollar raised is being donated to the West Chester Food Cupboard!

Congratulations to Dinith Halambage (EHS), Heidi Krug (HHS), Nathaniel Niederman (HHS), and Skylar Trudeau (HHS) for making All-State Band; Charlie Platt (HHS) and Vidhu Sriram (RHS) for earning a place in All-State Orchestra; and Jackson Ogden (HHS), Brooke Kauffman (HHS), Daniel Krewson (HHS), Leo Garcia Rodriguez (HHS), and Constantin Seliverstoff (HHS) for being selected for All-State Choir—with a special shoutout to Brooke for ranking 1st after Region Choir!
From Creek to Creation: EHS Art Students Explore Natural Clay
Ms. Maurer’s art class at East High School once again had the incredible opportunity to learn from visiting artists Drew Arata and Bob Deane! Students ventured to a local creek to dig for natural clay, then returned to the classroom to harvest, shape, and transform the raw material into unique ceramic pieces.
With the guidance of Drew and Bob, students experienced the full creative process—from sourcing materials to crafting finished artwork.
EHS Chamber Choir Shines at the PA State Capitol
During Music in Our Schools Month, we’re celebrating the incredible talent of East High School’s Chamber Choir! These dedicated students had the honor of performing at the Pennsylvania State Capitol as part of Senator Comitta’s press conference, showcasing their passion for music on a prestigious stage.
Their performance was nothing short of amazing, and we are so proud of them for representing WCASD with excellence. Bravo to these talented musicians for sharing the power of music with our community and beyond!
Fugett & East Orchestras End Music in Our Schools Month on a High Note!
8th graders from Fugett Middle School and the East High School Orchestra had the incredible opportunity to work with guest clinician Melissa Brun, representing D’Addario Orchestral!
Students embraced the traditional aural learning method, playing without sheet music to create fully formed arrangements. Fugett’s musicians brought the Irish fiddle tune "We Won’t Go Home Till Morning" to life, while East students mastered the French Canadian waltz "Fil et Bobine," layering harmonies and melodies to craft dynamic performances.
