Welcome Back Message from Principal Washington
Parents/Guardians of Stanwood High School Students:
I am so excited for the start of the 2024-2025 school year. I hope you all have enjoyed your summers and are ready for an exceptional year. This year, we steadfastly commit to nurturing a school environment where students feel valued, heard, and seen at SHS.
Our focus on classroom instruction, interventions, intentional teaching, re-teaching, and updated expectations regarding discipline and attendance stems from our dedication to your child's well-being and growth. Our promise, Strategic Plan, and Annual Action Plan will continue to guide this work.
I am eager to report that we are carrying out our second year of a freshman-only first day. Tuesday, September 3rd, will be only for freshmen and students new to Stanwood High School. This full-day event will allow our incoming freshmen and new students to learn SHS’s exceptions, enabling an easier transition from middle to high school.
The full-day event will start with an orientation. Our SHS Link Crew will serve as leaders and mentors to the incoming freshmen. The Link Crew will lead our freshmen through large and small group activities to address students’ needs and concerns.
After lunch, students will follow a modified schedule, allowing them to locate their classes and meet their teachers. The school day will begin at 7:40 a.m. and end at 2:10 p.m. Buses will arrive at 7:35 a.m. and depart the high school at 2:15 p.m.
The first day of school for Sophomores, Juniors, and Seniors will be Wednesday, September 4th, 2024. We will operate on the late start Wednesday schedule, which includes a 0 period starting at 8:10 a.m. Buses will operate on a regular schedule.
We will hold our Open House on Tuesday, September 10th, from 6:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Parents/guardians will pick up maps/schedules at 6:00 p.m. in the commons and be welcomed by the Administration Team. After being welcomed by the Administrators, parents/guardians will follow the students’ schedules. There will be a modified bell schedule.

School Reminders:
We offer two lunches at Stanwood High School. Students’ lunch is based on their fourth period teacher. Students will be able to purchase a lunch in the commons area at Stanwood High School or bring their own lunch from home. Students can look for the lunch posters around campus to find out which lunch they have. To apply for free and reduced lunch, please click here for information or stop by the main office with questions.
During the first days of school, students will review the student handbook, which includes the school's discipline policy, dress code, and closed campus policy. This will be completed during advisory sessions. Review the handbook with your student (the handbook will be available on the high school website, or you may request a hard copy from the main office).
This is a reminder concerning cell phones. Cell phones are not to be out or used during instructional time unless a Staff member allows the student to use them as a resource. Students who use their cell phones during instructional time to text, make phone calls, or take photos or videos are subject to disciplinary action, including having their phones confiscated by an administrator or security officer. The phone will be returned to the student at the end of the day.
Throughout a student's four years of high school, they will complete a number of state and local graduation requirements. This includes a High School and Beyond Plan and a graduation pathway. One of the pathways students can choose is to take and pass state assessments known as the SBA (Smarter Balanced Assessment). Students receive information on these requirements during their advisory period and from their counselors.
Parent/guardian involvement is critical to the high school process. We welcome your input. Please contact us by phone or email. The school website, which lists all staff members’ email addresses, is a resource for you. In addition, this newsletter contains important information. If you have any questions, please contact the high school at (360) 629-1300.
We look forward to a great year and hope to see you at our upcoming events.
Sincerely,
Mike Washington

Attendance
Absences must be cleared within 72 hours. If absences are not excused, students cannot make up assignments. (An administrator may sometimes have the authority to work with parents to excuse past attendance when dealing with extenuating circumstances; however, the 72-hour rule applies when allowing students to make up classwork.)
Philosophy
Good school attendance is essential for success in school and as a foundation for successful careers and relationships. The highlight of a quality educational experience is the interaction of an enthused, knowledgeable teacher and an interested student. Those not in class are denied this experience. The best policy for students and parents is to prearrange all necessary absences before the student is absent. Parents/guardians may prearrange by calling or sending a note to the Attendance Secretary.
Because it is the legal responsibility of teachers to maintain accurate records of student attendance, the Board of Directors has established attendance criteria that emphasize the importance of good attendance for student achievement. The following procedures will be in effect at Stanwood High School:
Attendance will be taken each period.
All students, regardless of age, must follow all school rules, including attendance rules.
(RCW 28A.225)
Procedure for excusing your child's absences
Absences must be excused within 72 hours of the student's return to school.
Parents and guardians may excuse absences by calling the attendance secretary at 360-629-1305, through Absence Notification using their Family Access password, by emailing kmccurry@stanwood.wednet.edu, or by providing a note to the attendance office.
Messages on notes, voicemail, or email should include the first AND last name of the student, the date of the absence, reason for the absence, and the parent or guardian signature.
Stanwood High School defines excused absences as absences due to illness, appointment or family business. Oversleeping or missing the bus are not considered excused absences.
If the student has classes at Stanwood High School AND Lincoln Hill High School, you must contact BOTH schools to excuse absences.
If your child arrives late to school:
Students arriving late must sign in on the attendance log sheet in the main office. If a parent or guardian cannot come in and sign for the student, they must call the attendance office or send a note excusing the tardiness. The student must write the time of their arrival on the note.
If your student needs to leave school early:
If a student needs to leave school early, the student must bring a note from the parent/guardian requesting the absence. The student should bring the note to the Attendance Office before school, and they will receive an "Early Dismissal Pass" that will allow them to sign themselves out of school.
Leaving campus without permission will not be excused after the fact.
Students should never leave school without properly checking out with the Attendance Office. If an emergency arises, that requires the student to leave school, the parent or guardian must notify the school.
It is best practice to send a note in the morning to have the student get an early dismissal pass. This prevents interrupting a teacher during class; the student can show the teacher the pass and leave quietly.
ATTENDANCE NOTIFICATIONS TO PARENTS/GUARDIANS
Auto dialer: Automated telephone calls are made to inform guardians of one (1) or more unexcused absences from class each school day.
To view Stanwood High School's Attendance Policy in full detail please refer to "Attendance Procedures" in Stanwood High School's Student Handbook in electronic form at https:llshs.stanwood.wednet.edu
Mental Health Update for Attendance
During the 2022 legislative session, House Bill 1834 was passed. This bill directed the Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction (OSPI) to categorize a student's absence from school due to a mental health reason as an excused absence due to illness, health condition, or medical appointment.
The updated language for an excused absence now states: physical health or mental health symptoms, illness, health condition, or medical appointment for the student or person for whom the student is legally responsible. Examples of symptoms, illness, health conditions, or medical appointments include but are not limited to medical, counseling, mental health wellness, dental, optometry, pregnancy, and behavioral health treatment (which can consist of in-patient or out-patient treatment for chemical dependency or mental health).
Bus Route Information
** BUS ROUTES WILL BE AVAILIBLE STARTING AUGUST 28TH
Parents/guardians are able to access individual student transportation information on-line! Versatrans elink is the portal to access bus route, stop time, location, and the bus your child will be riding.
At the login page the "User Name" and "Password" is your student's 7-digit identification number.
The Versatrans elink is http://elink.scsd.ac
Please contact your child's school for more information regarding login and the Transportation department directly regarding busing at 360-629-1229
REMINDER: All students need to be at the bus stop 5 minutes prior to their stop time.
Bus Passes
The office does not accept bus pass requests by phone. If your student will be riding a bus other than his/her own bus, he/she must bring a written request from a parent or guardian. Every effort will be made to notify students after 12:30 pm, but there are no guarantees that students will be notified after that time. The note should include the first and last name of your student, the name of the student that he/she is riding with, and the bus or route number.

B. Damage to school property shall result from the student's dress; or
C. A material and substantial disruption of the educational process will result from the students' dress or appearance.
For the purpose of this policy, a material and substantial disruption of the educational process may be found to exist when a student's conduct is inconsistent with any part of the educational mission of the school district. Prohibited conduct includes the use of lewd, sexual, drug, tobacco or alcohol-related messages, and gang-related apparel.
The uniforms of nationally recognized youth organizations, and clothing worn in observance of a
students’ religion are not subject to this policy.
The superintendent shall establish procedures providing guidance to students, parents, and staff
regarding appropriate student dress in school or while engaging in extracurricular activities. Such

A reminder to parents/guardians and students that school lockers are not secure-proof, so valuables should be left at home. This includes cell phones, money, jewelry, expensive clothing items, etc. Students will be issued a PE locker if they are taking PE, but they will not be for book use.
Lunch Time/Closed Campus
A student shall not leave the school campus during the school day unless excused by the school office. The parking lot is also closed during the school day. Students are not allowed in the parking lot for any reason without permission of a school official. Students may not “hangout” or sit in their vehicles during the school day including during lunch. Students are to ensure all needed items are gathered from their vehicle upon arrival to school. Violation of these rules will result in disciplinary action.
Newsletters
This August school newsletter will be posted on the SHS website. Hard copies will be available upon request. We will provide periodic electronic newsletters during the school year. Families can also find the weekly smore on our website’s HOME page, under GET CONNECTED.
Nurse/Health Room Info
Hello SHS families!
We look forward to seeing your smiling faces back on campus this fall! Just a few reminders as we start the year!
Please remember to keep your students home if they are ill! Please keep your student at home comfy, resting and tucked into bed if they have had a fever, vomiting or diarrhea in the last 24 hours. If your student's cough is severe and disruptive, they need more time at home. Students who have been prescribed antibiotics for a contagious condition, are often ready to return to school 24 hours after the first dose. Please contact your school nurse if you have any questions about whether or not your student should stay home.
Care plans, medication authorizations and medications can be brought into the school the week of August 26th, from 8am-2:30pm. Please call in advance to ensure a nurse is available to take your paperwork and meds. If your student has a life-threatening health condition, they cannot start school until paperwork and medications are in place. Please email hschutza@stanwood.wednet.edu with any questions of concerns.
Schools in Washington are required to provide the parents and guardians of students entering 6th through 12th grades with information on meningococcal disease. Meningitis is an infection of the fluid of a person’s spinal cord and fluid that surrounds the brain. There are two distinct kinds – viral and bacteria, with each type exhibiting similar symptoms. Viral tends to be less severe and students can get better without treatment. Bacterial can be very severe and may result in brain damage, hearing loss, disability and death. Symptoms may develop over one to two days and include: high fever and chills, stiff neck, headache, light sensitivity, vomiting, and sometimes a rash, coma, and seizures. Meningitis is much less contagious than the common cold or influenza. It is transmitted person-to-person through respiratory and throat secretions such as kissing or coughing. It may also be spread by sharing beverage containers. For additional information, please visit www.cdc.gov; the Snohomish Health District website at www.snohd.org; or check with your private healthcare provider.
If your student is not current with the required vaccines, nursing will contact you to discuss your plans and the district's obligation to protecting the health of all students.
School Meals
During the 2024/2025 school year, students are still required to pay for their breakfast and lunch. Students will need to add money to their student's account that will be available at the end of August. Additionally, ensure your student comes to school with money, or apply for the Free and Reduced meal program. Applications will be available in August.
