Course Overview
Number Talks supports Iowa core by building procedural fluency expectations from grades 1-8. It also addresses Standards for Mathematical Practice 1-3 and 6-8.
Participants of this course will learn the theory and understandings behind Number Talks and how to deliver a Number Talk through guided practice. The emphasis of the course will be on both the content involved as well as specific, strategic teacher moves to enhance learner outcomes.
Participants will actively participate in 15 hours of face to face training. Instructional moves include practice facilitating Number Talks after course instructor modeling. Participants will review and connect with their classroom materials, including where Number Talks are located and their purpose within a lesson.
PLAEA is offering two courses for Number Talks: one for Grades 1-3 and one for Grades 4-6. While this smore features information on the class for Grades 4-8, you can find more information about the class for Grades 1-3 here.
Course Objectives
- Know the intent of the Iowa Math Standards in the domains of Operations and Algebraic Thinking and Numbers and Operations in Base Ten.
- Understand that Number Talks build mental math and computational strategies by developing student fluency.
- Understand that developing a safe, nurturing classroom environment is essential for supporting number talks Implement Number Talks in classroom.
- Understand how intentionality of chosen talks impact both teacher moves and student connections to different entry points when using computation strategies.
Needed Materials
Participants will need access to:
- Publication: Making Number Talks Matter" by Ruth Parker and Cathy Humphries (Grades 4-8)
- Access to their classroom math text (online or hard copy).
Target Audience
This class is ideal for instructors who teach math in grades 4-8.
