🏆 Regional Champs to Global Stage: TVUSD Students Advance in STEM Competition
A Follow-Up to Our January Spotlight: Kiyara, Emma, and Kaliyah Continue Their Incredible FIRST LEGO League Journey!
Last month, we shared the incredible journey of Kiyara Gunawardena, Emma Rhee, and Kaliyah Oliver as they advanced to the regional finals of the FIRST LEGO League (FLL) Challenge with their groundbreaking Innovation Project. Now, we are thrilled to share an exciting update: these TVUSD students have secured a major victory!
On January 19th, the team won the Innovation Project category in SoCal FIRST LEGO League, outperforming 578 teams in the 9–14 age division. This achievement is particularly noteworthy, as Southern California is one of the most competitive regions in the world for FLL. Judges praised their presentation skills, problem-solving abilities, and innovative thinking, earning them a place among the top eight teams moving forward.
Their project aims to help researchers study coral bleaching events by developing an underwater monitoring system. They think this system can also be adapted to other underwater research applications. In the past six months, they have been working with researchers and subject experts to develop their initial idea into a working prototype that is patent-pending.
Next, in June, they will represent Southern California at the WPI Annual FLL Event, also known as WAFFLE. Worcester Polytechnic Institute, Massachusetts, hosts this three-day event, which attracts over 100 international teams. This marks another milestone in their journey, demonstrating their dedication to tackling real-world challenges through STEM. Kiyara, Emma, and Kaliyah are determined to bring another trophy home.
These three young innovators continue to inspire with their hard work, creativity, and teamwork, forging lifelong friendships along the way. We are immensely proud of Kiyara, Emma, and Kaliyah and look forward to seeing all they accomplish in the next round!
The team is seeking sponsorship opportunities to help with competition preparation. If you are interested in sponsoring them, please contact their coach, Warnaka, at warnaka.g@gmail.com.
