Thank you St. Rita families! We’ve asked you to assist your student in taking the STAR assessments and most have completed them. You will receive copies of your child’s assessment results with report cards in May.

Each year, St. Rita offers Summer Solution practice books for students in Prek – 8th grade to utilize through the summer months. Now more than ever, it is critical that students continue to practice math and literacy skills throughout June and July. In the past parents have ordered through the school and books were delivered to the classrooms before the last day. However with the recent pandemic and the closure of school, it isn’t practical for a school delivery and Summer Solutions is offering to deliver all books to your home. If interested in ordering, please utilize the link and school code below.

The objective of our DLD plan from May 4th-15th are the following:

• To allow students to make up any DLD work assigned prior to May 1st that hasn't been turned in.
• To provide students with activities that will address the slowing of the Covid/Summer slide
• To provide students with enriching activities that bring the school year to an end
• While learning activities from May 4th-15th will not factor into the overall academic grade, teachers will still provide feedback on learning. Students need to still turn in assignments and ask questions to receive feedback on their work.

All critical DLD activities to be taken for a grade from March 16th – April 28th will be graded and updated in the gradebook no later than 8am, May 4th. This includes adding an “incomplete” grade (“I”) in the overall subject area for students who have not turned in critical activities in order for the classroom teacher to deem student mastery for that subject in Trimester 3. If a student has any “Is,” or would like an opportunity to redo an assignment(s) in order to improve their overall grade, they have through May 15th to get that work completed and into the classroom teacher. This should take priority over activities assigned after May 1st.

Please check your Parent Portal for grades. If you have any questions about grades, please email the classroom teacher.

As missing assignments come in during the week of May 4-8th, teachers will score and update in the gradebook. These grades will be updated no later than May 11th in order for parents to again verify if their child no longer is missing work or has an “I.” If their child still has any “I(s),” this would be the last week (11th-15th) that the student has an opportunity to get missing work in.

It is important to know what the research is suggesting about the loss of learning students across the country will experience from the lack of “in-person” instruction since mid-March. St. Rita School administration was able to participate in a national Webinar hosted by NWEA (the company that services the MAP tests). A few major takeaways from the Webinar were that 70% of an average student’s learning gains in reading during a traditional school year would carry over and only 50% of learning gains in math due to face-to-face instruction ending March 13th. On top of this, those schools with high free and reduced lunch percentages see an even grader slide. These are all NWEA’s predictions and have many variables influencing the outcome.

Therefore, as part of our DLD plan for May, teachers will be building routines with students that could possibly carry over into the summer. The summer months, while not monitored by the classroom teachers, are an opportunity for students to keep skills current and possibly advance their abilities. As part of the NWEA Webinar, it was recommended by the Cofounder of Khan Academy that students do 20 to 30 minutes of daily math, reading, and writing.

REMINDERS/GUIDELINES:

• Teachers will continue to prepare DLD lessons and materials. Teachers K-5th grade will be using daily emails, posting assignments/packets to the “Homeroom” section of the Parent Portal, as well as posting to the school website, which can be accessed at the following link: https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1LoDCTE7djT9DXqiFKtml66LWwqfTwp6o?usp=sharin
• Hardcopy materials for K-5th grade lessons can be picked up at the school.
• Drop-off bins: we will continue to utilize “drop-off” bins for parents to drop off their child’s DLD work. Work can be dropped off at any time during school office hours.
• Teachers 6-8th grade will continue to use Google Classroom to communicate and post assignments. 6-8th grade teachers will also send daily emails to parents.

• Daily attendance: we will continue to request ONE weekly parent reply to their child’s teacher email in order to count the child’s attendance for the week. The following blanket message can be used as the parent reply or part of the reply: I understand the DLD expectations for my child’s weekly work and will have my child complete the assignments.
• Grades: Teachers will continue to communicate the essential assignments to be graded. However, it is expected that all work be completed in order for students to be successful with the required curriculum.

JCPS’s is offering daily free meals for any child under the age of 18. Because we have a 50% Free and Reduced Lunch (FRL) rate here at St. Rita, many of our students could benefit from this program. All children are welcome to receive free meals regardless of being a JCPS student or a RDL student. Please see list of sites where kids can receive free meals. Meals include breakfast and hot lunch.

Beginning Monday, March 16, Charter commits to the following for 60 days:

• Charter will offer free Spectrum broadband and Wi-Fi access for 60 days to households with K-12 and/or college students who do not already have a Spectrum broadband subscription and at any service level up to 100 Mbps. To enroll call 1-844-488-8395. Installation fees will be waived for new student households.
• Charter will partner with school districts to ensure local communities are aware of these tools to help students learn remotely. Charter will continue to offer Spectrum Internet Assist, high speed broadband program to eligible low-income households delivering speeds of 30 Mbps.
• Charter will open its Wi-Fi hotspots across our footprint for public use.
• Spectrum does not have data caps or hidden fees.
