Board Reports
Vice President Jerome Gallegos gave a special shout out to the Student Trustees for their hard work and dedication in representing their schools. He toured the new District Office and Adult Education Campus and is excited to see the completion of the final project. He is looking forward to seeing Westmoor High's production of "Grease" this Friday.
Clerk Sherrett Walker attended Westmoor High School's production of "Grease" this past Saturday and was impressed with production quality of this show, especially one scene in particular. As a Trustee, he enjoys attending school events and watching students show off their bravery through competitions and performances.
Trustee Andrew Lie shared that on Monday, March 11, he joined District and Daly City leaders for the resolution ordinance signing of the Serramonte Del Rey Project at the Daly City Hall. He noted that their monthly school site meeting for March was held at Thornton High School this past Thursday, along with taking a tour of the new District Office and Adult Education Campus on the same day. This past Saturday morning, he attended the Pacifica Youth Summit, hosted by Daly City Youth Health Center Director Mary Bier, and was thrilled to see many JUHSD students in attendance.
Trustee Rosie Tejada attended Oceana High School's spring festival this past Friday and was excited to see so many future students and their families in attendance, including her great nephew. She attended this past Monday's Student Advisory Council Meeting and shared that two eighth grade student leaders from a partner middle school visited this meeting; they look forward to joining this board once they enter high school. Next Thursday, she will attend the Rise Women's Leadership Conference at the College of San Mateo and looks forward to discussing ways in which this group can address area issues, including women's economic empowerment and lack of child care.
Superintendent Report
She elaborated on President Salahuddin's report in regards to school boards requesting that the state focus on existing programs, instead of just adding more, at their last CSBA online meeting. A future report on the state's ESSER (Elementary and Secondary School Emergency Relief) Fund, that it will require 152 hours of time to complete by the District's Business Services Department, is an example as to why this is needed.
AFT Local 1481 Report
American Federation of Teachers Local 1481 Union President Monica Casey shared that one of her new goals is getting employees involved with Union member events and committees, including the current negotiations taking place. She still holds on to her overall mantra of, "Better working conditions mean better learning conditions."
This past weekend, she and two other Union members, attended the CFT (California Federation of Teachers) March Summit. During this event, division and state councils, and bodies within CFT, looked at legislations and bills and ways to improve this governing process through the State Assembly and Senate.
Student Trustee Reports
Westmoor High Trustee Charlotte Tsang shared that the school's drama department held their opening night of their spring musical, "Grease" this past weekend. The school's math department held fun lunchtime activities in honor of Pi Day on March 16 and 17.
Oceana High Student Trustee Sagar Rajan reported that the school recently held a spring festival carnival-type event that was free to the OHS community. Current middle school students and their families were invited to attend this event, too! He noted that this event was lead by two underclass presidents and was quite a success, becoming a new tradition at OHS. The school's leadership class is working with school leaders to help set up for the school's Senior Exhibition event that will take place next week.
Jefferson High Trustee Nathalia Acevedo shared that the school recently held finals in their block schedule classrooms. Baseball and badminton is in full swing at JHS. A spring dance is on the horizon and she plans to attend.
