Senior Seminar Speakers
David Clayton, Face Addiction Now
by Jade Insley
Yesterday in Senior Seminar we had a very impactful guest speaker. His name was DaviClayton and he is the director of the HARMLESS Harm Reduction Support Team Program for Face Addiction Now.
When he first came in, he grabbed one of the chairs from a desk at the front of the classroom, turned it towards the class, and sat down. He started off by introducing himself and telling us his story. His story was very impactful. He told us he was raised pretty well. His mom was a high school secretary and his dad was a car salesman. He was a varsity baseball player since his freshman year of high school. He started going to a bunch of parties with his upperclassmen teammates which got him into drinking and doing drugs. He was a very socially awkward person but the drinking and drugs helped him fit in. He seeked validation from his peers and that is exactly what it gave him.
After graduating high school, he went to college on a full ride scholarship. He was on his college's baseball team. He partied all the time and he ended up becoming a liability instead of an asset for his team, which led to him being kicked off of the team and his scholarship being revoked. He ended up lying to his parents about it and made up a story about why he wanted to transfer out of the college he was at and go to community college near home instead. His parents believed him and he came home. Back at home he started to spend time with some of his old peers that were also going down a bad path. He started to go to parties and started doing worse drugs which led him to going to jail and rehab many times later in life until he finally got the help he needed. He told us that what really helped him get the help he needed was having positive people in his life who would always he there for him and make sure he stayed on the right track.
I'm very glad we had the opportunity to have David Clayton come to our class and talk to us. He was very inspirational and impactful and I think our class would benefit having more speakers like him.
