Letter from the Superintendent
Dear Nanuet Community,
This month, our Golden Spotlight highlights an important upcoming vote. On December 17, from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. at the high school, the District is asking voters to decide on the acquisition of property at 32 Highview Avenue for $577,000. The proposed plan includes demolishing the house to create a multi-purpose green space for outdoor learning. The design envisions a “park-like” environment where children can fully appreciate the natural environment for learning and play.
The total project cost—including the property purchase, house demolition and development of the outdoor garden space—is anticipated at approximately $1.2 million. This will be fully funded by District reserves, making the project cost-neutral for taxpayers with no increase in taxes.
We hope that you will be excited about the vision for this space and for the opportunity it presents for our students and staff at Highview. Please remember to vote on December 17!
Sincerely,
Lisa Brady, Ed.D.
Superintendent
District Highlights
Little Knights
George W. Miller Elementary felt thankful this month, thanks to a visit from the A. MacArthur Barr seventh-grade class. A dozen middle school students made the trip across campus this month to spend time with our kindergarteners. The 'Little Knights' visit revived a beloved Thanksgiving tradition where older Golden Knights share books about kindness, gratitude, and friendship with our youngest learners. Planetarium Visits
This month was out of this world for our Golden Knights! Fifth graders from A. MacArthur Barr and first graders from George W. Miller Elementary were transported to outer space by way of a mobile planetarium set up in their school gymnasiums. John Miller of Pearl Observatory guided students through the stars, showing them where to find constellations in the night sky and explaining the phases of the moon. Check out our Instagram post.
Staff Development Day
Nanuet teachers participated in a districtwide 'Staff Development Day' at the beginning of the month. At Nanuet Senior High School, Superintendent Dr. Lisa Brady presented on the New York State Blue Ribbon Commission on Graduation Measures. Meanwhile, at A. MacArthur Barr Middle School, K-6 teachers gathered for a presentation on the “Science of Reading,” led by literacy consultant Katie Cunningham. Read more in our Instagram post.
Community Mural
Hey Golden Knights! Do you remember when John Parra, the award-winning illustrator of 'Hey, Wall!', visited George W. Miller Elementary last February? Parra’s visit inspired students to find the beauty in their community. Building on that inspiration, elementary art teacher Eric Stormes united the Miller community to begin creating a Nanuet-themed mural. Check out its progress in our Facebook post.
Kindergarten Library Visit
A trip to the Nanuet Library! Throughout the month of November, our Kindergarten classes made the trip to 1489 Church Street to pick up their very own library card and scan the shelves. In addition to taking a tour of all the wonderful things the library has to offer, students got to hear some stories and meet Gigi, the library’s pet lizard! Check out our Instagram post to see photos from one of the visits.
Native American Heritage Month
Finding Nemo
Just Keep swimming! The Barr Drama Club dove into the musical Finding Nemo Kids, this month - a stage adaptation of the beloved Disney/Pixar film. Congratulations to the talented cast, hardworking crew, and dedicated production team for delivering two amazing sold out performances at A. MacArthur Barr Middle School. Clue
Was it Professor Plum in the study with the candlestick? Who killed Mr. Boddy?! The Nanuet Senior High School drama club took to the stage with their production of Clue earlier this month to help us find out. The play, directed by Ms. Shannon Cokeley was both funny and mysterious! Check out our Facebook gallery of photos to see the rest of the cast.
