The Bulldog Bulletin
Amelia Earhart and her Lockheed Electra at the Burbank Airport, ca. 1937
Lockheed Air Terminal in Burbank, California-- the first million-dollar airport constructed in the United States. This photo was taken shortly before she embarked on her last flight. See link below for a video of Amelia Earhart at the Burbank Airport the day she left for her fateful flight.
In 1932, Amelia Earhart became the first woman to fly solo across the Atlantic—as a pilot. Her awards included the American Distinguished Flying Cross and the Cross of the French Legion of Honor. In 1929, Earhart helped found the Ninety-Nines, an organization of female aviators.

Congratuations for your remarkable accomplishments!
Congratulations to Mr. Arin Movsessian--BHS Teacher of the Year!
We had four outstanding nominees for the Burbank High School Teacher of the Year. It was an incredibly difficult task for the committee to narrow it down to just one, as they are all superstars!
Please join me in congratulating our outstanding colleagues and nominees Wendy Miller, Rich Sarquiz, Arin Movessian, and Martin Collazos for their incredible achievements and dedication to the Burbank High School community. You have given so much to our students, staff, and their families, and we are excited to share this honor with you all!
After much deliberation, Mr. Arin Movsessian was selected as the Burbank High School Teacher of the Year for the 2023-2024 school year! Mr. Movsessian's nomination now moves to the District level, where a committee of BUSD employees will select the BUSD Teacher of the Year from all the school site's nominations. Congratulations and good luck, Mr. Movsessian!
Here is what colleagues have said about Arin:
Mr. Arin Movsessian is an incredible leader on the campus of Burbank High School. He inspires students to do their best and learn, whether as a teacher in the NAF Academy, coaching the JV tennis team, or supporting his students in SkillsUSA, an organization that “empowers students to become skilled professionals, career-ready leaders, and responsible community members.”
Mr. Movsessian recently took ownership of the SkillsUSA team, and in his first year coaching them, his team won three gold medals, as well as a silver and bronze medal at a local competition. He will take this successful team to the state championship in April.
The staff at Burbank High admire Mr. Movsessian for his willingness to support other teachers and assist with the school’s NAF duties. One example of his dedication to students is that when we had no teacher for Earth Space Science for the past two years, he voluntarily stepped up and offered to teach Astronomy instead of Earth Space for students who needed it. He truly cares about students and teaches from the heart.
Mr. Movsessian is humble and often stays out of the spotlight, but Burbank High wants everyone in the district to know that he is a hard-working, diligent, caring educator who wants the best for every student at Burbank High. We are honored to have him on our team and will gladly brag about him to anyone who will listen! He deserves recognition and accolades for all of his talents and success.

The BURBANK ARTS & EDUCATION FOUNDATION Spring Grant Cycle is Open!
The BURBANK ARTS & EDUCATION FOUNDATION is excited to invite staff, teachers, and the school community to apply to our upcoming Spring Grant Cycle. The deadline is Friday, March 8th at 4:30 pm. More information can be found at BurbankArtsandEd.org/grants
WHO WE ARE
The mission of the Burbank Arts & Education Foundation is to engage and inspire the community to invest in meeting the diverse educational needs of all 15,000+ BUSD students.
WHAT WE FUND
We support innovation and excellence in schools, including arts education, STEM programs, student safety and wellness, and other needs within the Burbank Unified School District (BUSD). Applications that reflect diversity, equity, and inclusion are encouraged. Awards will be distributed via our bi-annual grantmaking program.
Grants provide an opportunity for teachers to finance some of their needs in their classrooms. Perhaps the class library needs new books or science materials, or the teacher would like to have individual white boards for the students to use during their math lesson. This is also an opportunity to support larger school-wide programs that may not have enough funding, or supplement critical instruction. Applications may also be submitted to upgrade or replace equipment.
HOW TO APPLY
Two easy ways to fill out applications are available on our website; one for requests up to $500 and another for requests up to $5000. We encourage you to become familiar with our grant guidelines that explain our requirements, process and priorities for funding at BurbankArtsandEd.org/grants.
We encourage all school sites to think strategically and plan ahead. This will ensure that you have ample time to fully complete your application and acquire any required signatures of approval. All of the Foundation’s grant-making cycles are competitive within each cycle. There is no limit to how often you can apply. Foundation staff and board members are available to answer any questions or offer advice on your application before submission deadlines.
If you have any questions regarding the grants or the application process, please reach out via Grants@BurbankArtsandEd.org or at (818) 729-5593.
We have a long history of supporting teachers, schools and district programs and we look forward to building upon our legacy to create a better future for our students – together!

The Burbank Animal Shelter Needs Your Help!
Each year hundreds of tiny kittens are turned in at the Burbank Animal Shelter, but the shelter simply does not have room to house them all. The VBAS started our Kitten Foster Program (KFP) back in 2001 to house and care for these kittens, and each year we foster ~300 kittens. Without the Kitten Foster Program these kittens would be euthanized.
KFP fostered 385 kittens in 2023 (it was a very busy year), and we're getting ready to do it again in 2024. The kitten season goes from March until October/November with May/June/July traditionally being the busiest months. We are * very* much in need of more foster homes, especially in the May-August timeframe. With this in mind, we are reaching out to local high schools in Burbank to spread the word and recruit more fosters.
Fosters must be 18 years of age, so students' parents need to be involved and onboarded as well, but it's a great family activity, it is extremely rewarding, and it saves so many lives. Hours spent fostering can be used for community service, so it really can be a win-win for all involved.
Fostering is a bit of work, but it's a LOT of fun. The program supplies training, all supplies and medical care. The foster families provide a warm safe and loving home for a month or two, and they get to play with little kittens. (Yes, it is as good as it sounds).
Click on the link below, and check out some pictures of our amazing rescues and fosters!
Just like most schools across the country, BUSD schools, including BHS, have caught students vaping. Daily, our administrators and campus supervisors sweep student restrooms for those who are vaping. However, it is impossible to be present in all student restrooms all the time--particularly due to student privacy laws and laws against unreasonable searches. Unlike other schools, the vapes at BHS are primarily nicotine vapes. Occasionally, we do find marijuana vapes, but most are not.
We do the best we can, and the following consequences are in place:
1. For marijuana vapes: Students are suspended.
2. For nicotine vapes: First offense: Saturday school and anti-vaping class
Additional offenses: Saturday school; parent conference; possible referral to
counseling and a different school placement.
3. Any students caught selling vapes of any kind are subject to suspension and expulsion.
Students may NOT vape at all while on campus. This includes the front steps of the schools, parking garage, football field, restrooms, and any other place considered to be on campus.
Please see the following resources below for additional information. You can contact BHS if you or your child need support with quitting vaping.
