PeaceBuilder Principle for March
As PeaceBuilders develop empathy and compassion, they learn to notice when they have hurt someone, whether intentionally or not. PeaceBuilders restore cooperation and trust by making amends. At Maple Dale, Students need to do more than say “I’m sorry” when they hurt someone. They are coached by wise adults how to make amends through the creation of PeacePlans™ to ensure they will exhibit different behaviors the next time they are in a compromising situation.
Noticing hurts means dealing with suffering or pain. The act of noticing may mean simply that you acknowledge that other people are hurting. So, please start noticing hurts that you have caused or some that need attention at your site or in your community, especially ones that young people can begin to do something about in small ways. Noticing hurts is the beginning of making a better world. Apologizing or noticing hurts can be very difficult to do. It is more likely to happen, however, if you create a climate for peace, rather than dealing with issues on a case-bycase basis. Creating such a climate (where adults and children make apologies and notice the hurts that they cause) reduces the perceived threat and feelings of anxiousness often associated with apologies. It also helps to alleviate children’s fear of exposing themselves. There is considerable evidence that many children avoid speaking up about hurts they have witnessed, in order to avoid retaliation.
Lost and Found
We have a good amount of items in our lost and found. You may want to have a look through the items before Spring Break, at which time, if things are still left in the lost and found, they will be donated to Matthew 25.
We recommend you put your student's name on the following items to avoid them being put in the lost and found:
- coats
- hats
- gloves/mittens
- snow pants/snowsuits
- boots
- shoes
- water bottles
- lunch boxes
- anything of importance or value
We try really hard to return items back to their owners, however, a name on the item would make it so much easier.

BUDDY BAGS!
Maple Dale believes that community service plays an essential role in the eudcation of our children. In combination with PeaceBuilders and our upcoming Candace Fleming visit, we are asking our students and families to work together to support our sister school, Winton Hills Academy. Just like Rosie sent food and notes to Katje, our students will send food and notes in a Buddy Bag to our sister school. There are 500 students at Winton Hills Academy so we are asking for all grade levels to be involved with this meaningful service activity. Please see the below list that is organized by grade level.

Camp Invention is coming to Sycamore Community School District!
Since 1990, Camp Invention has taken summer fun and transformed it from ordinary to extraordinary! In partnership with the National Inventors Hall of Fame, Edwin H. Greene Intermediate School is pleased to offer the nationally-acclaimed Camp Invention program to children entering grades 1st-6th. It’s an exciting, weeklong summer adventure with lessons that explore connections between science, technology, engineering and innovation. Children will work together to seek solutions to real-world problems and sharpen critical 21st century learning skills while rotating through several fascinating modules. The week begins on June 5, 2017 with Chris Gutermuth serving as Director of the Launch program! Here is how young innovators will be spending their time: Engaging creative thinking to design and build their own duct tape creations Experiencing the power of rocket science by building and launching rubber band rockets Exploring aerodynamics to blast water rockets made from plastic bottles more than 50 feet in the air Taking apart nonworking machines and devices to investigate their inner operations All activities give participants the opportunity to explore, discover and achieve while having fun! Local educators will facilitate program modules and enthusiastic high school students will serve as Leadership Interns ensuring that one program team member is in place for every eight children.
