LISD School Newsletter

A Note from Dr. Martin
Dear LISD Families,
Spring conferences are coming up in the next month. Secondary conferences will be Wednesday, March 20th from 12:40-3:30 and Thursday, March 21st from 12:40-7:00. Secondary students will be dismissed at noon Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday of that week. You can begin signing up for secondary conferences today through Parent Square.
Elementary conferences will be Monday, April 1 through Friday, April 5. Elementary students will be dismissed at noon each day that week. Teachers will be collaboratively coordinating sibling conferences first and then making other conference slots available to families.
Conferences offer an opportunity to meet with your child or teenager's teacher(s) to discuss and celebrate their academic progress and social emotional learning, share information, and ask questions. Please bring your child to the conference. In most circumstances, it's very important for them to be at the table when adults are talking about school, so they can share their experiences and growth, and talk about their work. We all want students to be leaders of their own learning, and participating in conferences is a step in that direction.
Thanks in advance for coming to conferences and partnering with us in the education of your child. We love having the chance to engage in these conversations and we appreciate the time you take out of your busy lives to come to school. I'll be on campus during both elementary and secondary conferences and hope I get to say hello to all of you!
Have a fantastic weekend. Remember to spring forward and set your clocks ahead on Saturday night. We'll all be a little sleepy for a few weeks, but the extended daylight at the end of the day is our reward.
All my best,
Martha

Please see our website for more information and details about how to apply.
Middle School Band - Going Strong!
Middle school students are learning flute, clarinet, saxophone, trumpet, french horn, and euphonium. For most of them, this is their first time learning to play an instrument and read music, and it’s exciting seeing them build their skills. Despite this being their first year of band, they are already successfully playing rhythms usually introduced to students in their second or third year of playing.

College Scholarship Opportunity for Seniors!
The San Juan Preservation trust will award a $4000 scholarship to two graduating high school seniors. Deadline is April 19. More information here.
Seeking Baby Plants - Can You Help?
The Lopez Garden Club and the School LIFE Garden team are joining together again this year to host the annual Mother's Day Weekend Plant Sale. This fundraiser is one of the biggest events for both organizations and helps support education of students in the classroom as well as guest speakers and other garden-related programming.
This year's plant sale will be the Saturday of Mother's Day weekend, May 11th from 10 am to 1 pm. We are looking for all types of plants- annuals, perennials, houseplants, succulents, flowers & veggies.
If you can help, please contact Sara Jones at sjones@lopezislandschool.org.
LIPTSA Talent Show is in Two Weeks!
If your student has a talent they want to showcase now is the time to sign up! Also, get your tickets now. We have a set amount of tickets available and we will not be able to sell additional tickets after we reach our limit. Purchasing online is the only way to guarantee your seat. Kids are free but still need to sign up for ticket online.
Yearbook Ads Available - Deadline is March 31
The LISD yearbook club is looking for local business sponsors to purchase ad space in this year's annual. This year, every student K-12 gets a yearbook unless they opt out so it is a better time than ever to get exposure for your business and to also support our school's yearbook club. A full-page 8.5 x 11 ad is $200, a half-page is $100, and a quarter-page is $75. All ads are in full color. If you would like to purchase an ad, please send your graphic as a high-resolution jpg or png file to jhammond@lopezislandschool.org and our expert team will take care of the rest. All ads and payments are due by March 31st. Payments must be made by cash or check to the LISD District Office.
Staff vs. Students Basketball Game

Interview with a Senior: Melissa Valencia
What clubs/athletics/extracurriculars have you been involved in? I’ve played basketball for two years; volleyball, soccer, and golf for three years. I’ve also been a part of Spanish Club and ASB for two years, and I’m currently part of the Japan Connections program. We are doing a research project and will be doing most of that when we are in Japan in April.
What is one positive memory from your time here that you’ll carry with you forever? I have many memories but the most memorable is from last year when I won first and third place in post season golf, and when our girls’ golf team won districts and tri-districts. The thing that made it heart warming and emotional is that it was Mr. Tetu’s last season with us.
What is the best piece of advice you have received from a teacher? Mr. Tetu reminded me of an important piece of advice at state championship when I really needed it since I was struggling to forget a bad shot and move on to the next. He said, “Golf isn’t a game of perfect.” Throughout the ’season, he never let me forget that and that’s the best piece of advice I’ll never forget. Golf and life are the same….It can’t be perfect. You’re bound to mess up.
Finish this sentence: “I cannot live without…….” I can’t live without love and hot cheetos. My friends think my blood is full of red dye #40.
What is the most creative excuse you have ever used to get out of school work? I’m not very creative. I just don’t show up.
What is one piece of advice you have for incoming high school students? You don’t need to be friends with everyone. There is no need to waste your energy of those who only want to bring you down.
What is the most meaningful assignment ever given to you by a teacher? In Ms. S’s English 10 class, we had to experience something with those who live without. I chose to live without speaking English for a week. It was very difficult to communicate with those around but in the end I realized how fortunate I am to be bilingual.
What’s the most important quality in a friendship? Why? Honesty, because it creates a foundation of trust between friends. I’m a very honest person. Sometimes I feel like people don’t like me because of that, but deep down I know that my friends accept my honesty as me being genuine.
In 10 years, I will be… Playing in golf tournaments and traveling the world.
Who/what do you find inspiring? My mom is my biggest inspiration. She is the hardest working and funniest person I know, and she’s my number one supporter in everything.
What song summarizes your feelings about graduating from high school? My Future by Billie Eyelish. I really enjoyed my time in high school but I’m ready to say goodbye and go on to the next chapter of my life.
What are your plans after high school? I plan to attend a four year university and study health and human sciences.
Is there anything else you want people to know about you? I’m not as shy as I seem ;-)
