Husky Happenings
May 6 - 10
From Mr. Martin
You can't find your voice if you don’t use it.
I find this quote to be inspiring and quite frankly, challenging, especially when it is used with middle school students in mind. As a practice we encourage students to advocate for themselves as well as their fellow classmates. This can prove to not be so easy. They do not want to be considered a "snitch". A retired staff member had the best way of addressing that concern for the student. She would say, "You are not telling to get someone in trouble, you are telling them to change their behavior and stop their actions". It is important that our students are brave enough to say when something is not right and want to do something to create a better outcome. This takes courage. Empower your students to speak up when there is something that they see that is wrong. Encourage your students to send an email or talk to a staff member when they see something that they want to see improved. Sometimes what they share at home isn't shared at school. We can work together to create a school community where everyone can be proud to be a Husky.
Student Success From Mrs. Rousselo
Make sure your middle schooler keeps reading over the summer
When kids don’t read over the summer, they are at risk of losing some of their “word smarts.” To keep your middle schooler reading over summer break:
• Walk the walk. Make reading a part of your daily life. Let your middle schooler see you learning through magazines or choosing a novel over a TV show.
• Read a few young adult books yourself. By exploring books written for middle schoolers, you may get a better feel for what’s going on in your child’s life. Ask a librarian for suggestions.
• Share what you’re reading. Did you just come across an interesting article in the news? Tell your middle schooler about it.
• Respect that your child’s interests are changing, and help find books that reflect new interests.
• Don’t panic. Adolescence is all about change, so it’s normal for your middle schooler to lose interest in reading for a while. Just continue being enthusiastic about books and reading, and chances are that enthusiasm will return.
