A few words from Mr. Jelks...
Dear LIS Families,
It’s hard to believe that two months have already flown by! As we prepare to wrap up October, we’re excited to announce that Ladysmith Intermediate School will be hosting our annual Halloween Parade on Thursday, October 31st at 11:00am The parade will take place on the blacktop, weather permitting. In the case of bad weather, we will move the festivities into the gym.
Thank you for a very successful Parent/Teacher Conference session. We are thankful everyone had time to meet with teachers and staff. Many of you expressed gratitude and recognized the teachers for their hard work and dedication to your children. More than ever, your feedback is appreciated.
Have a great weekend and we look forward to seeing all the creative costumes and celebrating together!
Huy'ch'qa,
Dionte Jelks

The end of October is near and with Halloween fast approaching the safety of our students is foremost in our minds. We want our students to have some fun, but we also want them to stay safe. At LIS, we want all students to be mindful of their choices throughout the year in terms of how they might make other people feel. As we inch towards Halloween think about keeping with the LIS value of Celebrating Diversity (which includes cultural and gender diversity…) we wanted to support you in supporting your children in making appropriate choices for their costumes.
Ladysmith Intermediate is a Grade 4 to Grade 7 school, and this means that our students have a very wide range of ages and levels of maturity. We must be sensitive about costumes both for personal safety as well as to protect some of our students from being frightened during a time that is intended to be fun. As families are looking at purchasing or making costumes for Halloween, please keep in mind that costumes must not pose a tripping hazard or make it difficult for the student, or others, to participate in class activities.
Ladysmith Intermediate Costume Guidelines
1.Students may wear Halloween costumes but must be recognizable. E.g., No full masks or full facial coverings. Masks may be worn for the costume parade but not in class or at recess.
2. Face painting is allowed if the student is recognizable, and the painting applies to the costume being worn. E.g., Whiskers for a cat, nose for a clown.
3. No toy (or real) weapons or costume components that pose a safety risk.
4. If a costume is determined by a staff member to be a disruption in the classroom, a possible safety hazard or inappropriate, the student will be asked to change.
5. Any student wearing a costume must fully prepare before arriving to school. Spray cans, hair coloring, spray string, face painting, etc. will NOT be allowed at school.
6. Parents are encouraged to supervise their child’s costume choice – keeping in mind that ultimately Ladysmith Intermediate is a place of learning, safety, and appropriateness. Please do not have costumes that will frighten or offend others in the school.
7. If students do wear inappropriate costumes, the administration reserves the right to ask them to change.
At our Remembrance Day assembly this year scheduled for November 7th at 10:45 am we would like to honour loved ones who have been impacted by war in some way, such as those who served, are serving, or are involved with Canada’s military or peacekeeping.
If you have a connection to someone who is or has been in the Canadian military, please share a .jpg picture of this person with us so we can include the photo in our Remembrance Day slideshow. In addition to the photo(s), it would be helpful if you could identify the person or people in the photograph, and let us know the context and connection to Ladysmith Intermediate. For this, could you please include:
1. Your child's first and last name,
2. The first and last names of the person/people in the photo
3. The relationship of person in photo to student at LIS
4. Rank and/or titles of the person/people in the photograph
5. Which part of the Armed Forces they served in
6. The wars or conflicts the person/people has/have served in.
If you have digital photos available, please email the .jpeg (or similar file format) and explanation to Dionte Jelks at dionte.jelks@sd68.bc.ca If you would like us to scan the photos, please bring them to the office in an envelope with the information included, along with the name of the LIS Student it should be returned to clearly indicated on the envelope. In order to give us time to create the slide show, we ask that these photos and information are provided by Monday, November 4th. Thank you for your consideration.
Community Fair
NLPS is hosting a new and improved Community Supports Fair for our staff to network with community agencies serving children and youth, as well as any families who wish to attend. It will include an open house for all to visit and connect with the district resources based at the Dufferin site. The come and go event will be held at the Dufferin Gym on November 26th from 1:00-4:00 pm.
The next scheduled PAC meeting will be on Thursday, Nov. 7th at 6:30pm in the LIS library. Please come on out and join the discussion on what's happening in your child's school. Click on the button below to join from home.
Attendance
We ask parents/guardians to call the school before 9:00 am at (250) 245-3351 or email Info.LI@sd68.bc.ca to notify the school of your child’s absence. Please follow up with a note to your child’s teacher when your child returns to school so the teacher can address any missed work, homework issues, etc. Also a reminder that if students need to leave early, they should be signed out in the main office.
School Closure
The following is a reminder about the NLPS school closure procedure for students.
If schools are closed due to snow, or any other weather-related problems, announcements will be made on local radio stations (WOLF 106.9 FM, WAVE 102.3 FM, and 91.7 COAST FM) by 7 a.m., or earlier, on the day of the closure. Please do not call the radio station – tune in and listen for the announcements, which will be made on a regular basis.
In addition, the district will post the information on the district’s website, Twitter, Facebook, and mobile app. Families may also receive a message through the School Messenger notification system via phone, email, or text. Please keep in mind, however, that there may be situations where this is not always possible, for example, power outages or technical problems. The most reliable method is to listen to the local radio stations.
