4-H, Friends, and Flannel
The Allegany County Fairgrounds Multipurpose Building was filled with flannel shirts, smores, trail mix, STEM, animal sciences, youth development opportunities, and lots of smiles on Monday, November 18, 2024, at the 4-H, Friends, and Flannel open house event! It was a great evening of fun, snacks, learning, and connecting with our community. It was rewarding to see everyone traveling from table to table, talking, laughing, and engaging with each other. From interactive educational activities to animals to meet, from fun group photos at our fall flannel-themed backdrop to door prize drawings...who can forget the s’mores and trail mix stations?
We could not have had such a successful event without our volunteers, families, and 4-H members. Thank you for your help and dedication to our community and 4-H program. If you could not attend our event in November, there is still plenty of time to learn more about volunteering with or participating in 4-H in the new year, which is just around the corner. Please reach out to our office at 301-722-3320 or by emailing mharman2@umd.edu.

Thankful for Head Start Partners
Allegany County SNAP-ED Educator Mandy Hawkins presented to parents at the new Frostburg Head Start location on Thursday, November 21st. The Frostburg Child Development Center opened with a ribbon cutting on September 20, 2024, and is located on Water St., next to the Frostburg Community Pool and Park. The center houses the Frostburg Branch of Head Start, Early Head Start, and the City of Frostburg Summer Day Camp program. SNAP-ED has had a long-standing collaboration with all of these programs in Allegany County. All six Head Start locations across the county currently utilize the Edible ABC's curriculum, which connects alphabet letters with healthy foods and physical activity.
The November 21st Head Start Parent Event was well attended and included a lesson for parents from our newest curriculum for the preschool age group, Raising Food Explorers. This is our latest curriculum for educators to employ in their early childhood and elementary classroom work. Parents were led through discussions and activities addressing raising healthy eaters and being good role models to their children. The children and parents were treated to an Apple Pie Smoothie tasting made with frozen apples and sweet potatoes!
Agriculture & Food Systems Education Continues in Schools
Hands On Hydroponic Learning at Westernport Elementary
Westernport Elementary School's fifth-grade students were taught about growing hydroponically and created practice hydroponic boxes. With school funding, Westernport Elementary will purchase hydroponic towers to help provide families with freshly grown lettuce and other greens.
GC Elementary Raised Bed Fall Clean-up & Galic Bulb Planting
At the George's Creek 4-H after-school program, students learned the importance of cleaning the garden and clearing the space to prepare for the next growing season. Students also planted garlic for a spring harvest.
Seed Saving and Fall Planting Workshop
Over 20 people attended the Native Seed Event at the Allegany County Extension Office. Attendees received a brief class on the importance of growing native plants, followed by additional education on winter sowing, presented by Master Gardener Donna Gates. Over 20 varieties of native seeds were given out, along with information about the Bay-Wise Program and other UME native plant-growing guides. For information on native plants, look at the resources from the UME Home and Garden Information Center. https://extension.umd.edu/resource/native-plants-home-landscape/
Paper Cover Campaign Through December 15
To embrace the holiday spirit, the Paper Clover campaign has moved from October to November and December this year, officially launching on Black Friday! We are thrilled that TSC is hosting this event during the giving season. We have seen awesome support from our community during past Paper Clover events, and we can't wait to see how much we raise this time for 4-H Camp and Leadership Scholarships! So stop by Tractor Supply Company in LaVale and purchase paper clovers to help support our 4-H programs!
Career and Financial Planning for College Students
Our Allegany County UME FCS Educator, Jesse Ketterman, visited local college students this past fall to discuss career choices, student loans, and budgeting. The student loan debt is currently about 1.75 trillion dollars. Current research shows that 65% of students who borrowed money have more debt than expected, and 68% are less confident they can pay off their debt.
Buying Local Helps All - WMFC Conference
The Western Maryland Food Council held its third Our Food, Our Future Conference on Friday, November 15th. The theme was "Buying Local Helps All." The conference was held in three locations: Garrett College, Allegany College of Maryland, and the Washington County Extension Office, and it was also held online through Zoom. Nearly 60 participants attended the conference.
The conference speakers who focused on local foods included Joni Brode with the UPMC Western Maryland Health System, speaking about the Food Pharmacy Program; Emily Bauer with the Maryland Department of Human Services, explaining the Restaurant Meals Program for SNAP recipients; Clint Rawlings, Executive Director of America's Hauling for Hope presenting on his local home delivery program; Pam Detrick, Director of Dining Services at Frostburg State University with Chartwells Higher Education talked about local food purchasing in higher education; Walt Ranalli, co-owner of Sirianni's Pizza Cafe in Davis, WV described purchasing local foods for a restaurant; and Heather Hulsey, with the Southern Maryland Agricultural Development Commission, presented about the Maryland Market Money Program, which provides matching funds for local produce for certain qualifying recipients.
After each morning and afternoon session, participants had a chance to discuss the programs and possibilities for improving the food system among participants from their county. Participants also had access to an online tool called Padlet to share their thoughts. The day's program concluded with a summary of possible action steps for each county. If anyone wishes to view the Padlet, which will be open for a couple of weeks to gather additional comments, you can do so at https://padlet.com/wlantz1/2024-wmfc-food-conference-buying-local-helps-all-jmj3ew6xksrlt7dc.
