LETTER FROM THE PRINCIPAL
Happy New Year Everyone! We’ve had lots of fun learning Gaga Ball this week, re-setting expectations and routines, and jumping into learning. Our goal to elevate and affirm student voices is alive and we’re seeing outcomes. Students are sharing their thinking during “math talks” (a short but powerful segment of K-5 math instruction) and learning the importance of listening to the ideas of their classmates. This week I heard 1st graders enthusiastically sharing all the different ways they could see numbers and other attributes in a photograph of various kinds of sports balls . Also, 5th graders discussing “what does it mean to influence something—in this case, individuals and societies, or communities of people?” and “How can sports affect the way we view others” as they began a new Language Arts (Wit & Wisdom) unit called “Reflect on the Power of Sports”. It is so much fun to hear and see children learning and engaging with each other and the incredible talent of our teachers in making that happen.
Thanks so much for all your support as our staff and community also works to improve our attendance and on time arrival rates this year. It makes such a difference on so many levels of the school day and the overall learning and experience for all students (and staff)! We’re interested in how things are going for students and families, and what we might be able to do in support. You may have noticed the “Beat the Bell” section our Site Council shared in the Dolphin Digest the past two releases: please check it out further on and look for it each week. (We’d love to hear your thoughts; feel free to email or call!) We continue to use our school motto “I am because we are” to help us stretch ourselves from where we are now and work toward a sense of belonging, love and joy for every single one of our students. Our motto represents our goal of focusing on relationships and cooperative learning like what I described those 1st and 5th graders engaged in (and K, 2nd, 3rd and 4th are just as actively in the work!)-- as we strive to create meaningful connections for our students in classrooms and across our school community. Our goals are to improve Reading and Math Achievement and Sense of Belonging, and for students to access that learning, individually but also collectively, we need them here regularly and on time so they can participate in all our efforts. Thank you so much for all that takes! Here is a link to the hand-out we shared at Back to School Night if helpful in tracking and celebrating - Keep Track of Time.
Try These Tips For Smoother Mornings
- Get to bed on time, including grown-ups!
- Fill backpack the night before and set by door for a grab-and-go situation.
- To get sluggish kids moving, try dance music!
Warmly,
Lisa

NEW GAGA BALL PIT AT ARLETA
Over winter break, a new gaga ball pit was installed on the Arleta playground! The new equipment was funded by donations raised during our Dolphin Dash events and coordinated by the PTA. A big thank you to our community for supporting this fun, new addition to our school!
Your student will be learning how to play the game and Arleta's rules from Ms. Hannah's PE class. Our gaga ball pit is ADA accessible with a gate that swings open. The game is intended to provide more options for physical activity during recess, and improves agility, motor skills and cooperation. Click on the video below this article to learn the rules of Gaga ball!
We hope everyone has fun playing gaga ball!

VOLUNTEER NEED SPOTLIGHT
PTA Webmaster
Arleta PTA's website helps parents connect to programs and keeps us all updated on events and resources at the school. But did you know it's run by parent volunteers? We need a new volunteer to upload flyers and information to our GoDaddy website. Knowledge of html or other web languages is not necessary but some familiarity with website building software is a plus (though not a requirement) and the tasks take about 30-45 minutes once a week. This is a way to help Arleta from the comfort of your home! Our outgoing volunteer Sheryl Moren will train you.
To volunteer please email the PTA by clicking the button below.
Poetry Corner
Each week we feature a poem from literature that you can share with your kids. Poems are quick ways to practice literacy and work like little packages of thoughts and feelings that explore the world in new ways.
Until I Saw The Sea
Until I saw the sea
I did not know
that wind
could wrinkle water so.
I never knew
that sun
could splinter a whole sea of blue.
Nor
did I know before,
a sea breathes in and out
upon a shore.
