Grade 9 Honours Class Monthly Update
The Raven Report
Welcome Back!
By: Grace, Nevada, and Sophia
Everybody set your alarms, school is back in session! We are a part of the grade 9 ELA honors class. Our class will be writing monthly articles, throughout the school year, to inform you of all the latest things happening here at RHJ.
Welcome Week
As students settled back into school life, the staff decided to throw a Welcome Week (Thank you, Staff!). As most of you know, we did not have school on Monday, Sept. 2, due to Labor Day. However, we came to school on Tuesday, Sept. 3, and were pleasantly surprised with cookies. Wednesday, Sept. 4, was Raven’s Wear Day. Everybody dressed up in our Raven’s colors (purple and black), or Raven’s attire. Thursday, Sept. 5, was a free hot lunch. Staff and students worked very hard and diligently to serve everybody a hot dog and juice box. (Thank you to our Leadership 9 students, for helping out!) Last but most definitely not least, there was Funday-Friday, Sept. 6, where everybody participated in a school-wide scavenger hunt, with trivia about the staff. Did you know that Mr. S. is a part time chef?
Sports
Volleyball tryouts have already happened and teams were selected. Congratulations to the select few students who made the team! In volleyball league action, the junior girls won vs SCA, and the junior boys lost to SCA in a close three set battle. Unfortunately, the senior girls lost vs ABJ in league play. If you’re interested in watching some of our games, all of our league games are on Tuesdays.
The cross country running team is going on a field trip on October 2 to the Strathcona Wilderness Center. There they will compete against all the other EIPS schools in a running race of 2-3 km. If you’re interested in joining any of our sports teams, our website has all the information that you’ll need.
Get Your Running Shoes On!
On September 26, RHJ participated in our annual run for Terry Fox. Throughout last week and the rest of this week, our school has been fundraising for cancer research. The homeroom that raises the most amount of money will receive a pizza party! As of Sept. 26, Mr. Reid and homeroom 91 had raised about $4000 and counting.
Truth & Reconciliation
On Friday, Sept. 27, we wore our orange shirts to commemorate the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, which is on Sept. 30. We do not have school on Monday, so that we can take the time to honor residential school survivors and their families along with the ones who sadly did not make it home. Make sure you take the time on this day to learn more about how residentials schools affected and continue to affect indigenous peoples.
The Raven Report will keep you up to date with all of our latest activities and events at RHJ. Be sure to look for our next article at the end of October, which is posted in our school newsletter and on our school Facebook page.
Yearbook 2023-24!
We apologize for the delay! The yearbook will be submitted to the publisher prior to Thanksgiving. We anticipate a quick turnaround from the piublisher once we submit the yearbook to them.
School Council-Parents Wanted!
Congratulations to our new Schol Council chair Amy Hoffman and vice chair Lynn Shannon. We are hoping to fill the position of Secretary at our next meeting, as well as the positon of Treasurer of our parent foundation. If you are interested please let us know!
Did you know?
EIPS is committed to a productive and collaborative relationship with parents and caregivers. As such, the Division has a Committee of School Councils (COSC) comprised of representatives from school councils across EIPS. From October to May, COSC members meet monthly with the Board of Trustees and senior EIPS administration to discuss educational issues and trends, while sharing valuable information with one another to best enhance student success. In recognition of the effort and dedication of EIPS families and staff in engaging with their school communities, the Division was honoured to receive the Division School Council Engagement Award from the Alberta School Councils’ Association last April. To learn more, visit the EIPS website.
Read In Week 2024 is taking place October 7-11.
Read In Week is a divisionwide initiative held annually to encourage a lifelong love of reading and to enhance literacy awareness among students, staff, families and community members. This year’s theme: “Reading is for everyone.” Some of our activities planned for Read In Week include guest readers and a partner reading visit with our friends from Win Ferguson School.
Rudolph Hennig invites all families to participate in Read In Week by reading yourself, with your child or with someone in the community. For more information, visit the Read In Week website
Celebrating World Teachers’ Day: October 5
October 5 is World Teachers’ Day! World Teachers’ Day recognizes the integral role teachers play in providing quality education to students. On October 5, Elk Island Public Schools (EIPS) encourages all of its students, parents, caregivers and community members to show their appreciation for their teachers and the positive impact they make on our lives. EIPS extends its heartfelt thank you to all Division teachers for their dedication, hard work and commitment in guiding and educating students through their kindergarten to Grade 12 years
