We Need YOU!
We are looking for 3 teachers and 2 more students to join our school council. This advisory committee will meet once a month once all members have been identified. The council will be comprised of the principal, parents of students attending the school, teachers, students, and "other persons drawn from such groups or entities as municipal government, business and labor organizations, institutions of higher education, human service agencies or other interested groups, including those from school-age child care programs". The role of the school council is to assist the principal in adopting educational goals for the school that are consistent with local educational policies and statewide student performance standards, identifying the educational needs of students attending the school, reviewing the annual school building budget, formulating a school improvement plan, and reviewing the student handbook each spring to consider changes in disciplinary policy to take effect for the following school year. The make up of the council encourages diverse perspectives in the formulation of a consensus plan. Please email gnieves@webster-schools.org if you are interested in being elected as a representative of the school council.
Young Writers Creative Writing Contest
Any students interested in participating in the Young Writers Creative Writing Contest should see Ms. Sanborn in Mobile 4 for an entry form. The theme for this contest is Fight or Flight. Entry forms include story starters and ideas to help you plan your writing. Stories must be 100 words or less. Students have the opportunity to be published in a book and win a $50 Amazon gift card. If you have any questions, please see or email Ms. Sanborn.
Three students from Bartlett were chosen to be included as published authors in the Young Writers' most recent contest. The theme of this year's contest was Fright Club: The Forgotten. Young Writers challenges students to write a story in 100 words or less. This is the 7th year that BHS students have participated in this contest. Young Writers will provide Bartlett High School with a complimentary copy of the book, and additional copies are available for parents to purchase. This year's published authors are Nadia Olivier, Landyn Balser, and Maya Issler (not pictured).
Poetry Contest Opportunity
The "Club del Libro en Español Worcester" is organizing a Poetry Contest among Spanish speaking young writers. Our aim is high-schoolers and college kids from Massachusetts and beyond. Last year we had poems from Venezuela, Dominican Republic and other countries. Most of the writers were from Worcester. This year they are expanding their program and have invited the students at Bartlett to enter the contest if they are interested as well. There is a $300.00 prize as well as the opportunity to have their poem recorded in the Talking Books Library at the Worcester Public Library if they are chosen as the winner. Please see the two flyers below for more information and contest rules.
Staff Supply Orders
Moving forward, if anyone needs to order supplies, please make sure to see Ms. Nieves for approval prior to giving the order to Ms. Donnelly.
Staff Parking
Please make sure that you have your assigned Parking Tag hanging from your rearview mirror. Beginning Monday, we are asking that if you notice a construction worker parked in a BHS parking spot, to make note of the make, model, and plate number of the vehicle, and report it to Ms. Nieves. She will then let the construction team know.

Extracurricular Activities
Student Council
Our Student Council Representatives attended the MASC State Conference this past week where they connected with peers, gained insight from expert speakers, and participated in engaging workshops. They all had some great things to say about their time away!
Deijah Delgado: "I enjoyed listening to the speakers and interacting with various people from other schools. I had a lot of fun during the get togethers and learned different ways people do things for fundraisers, activities, etc."
Jared Fallas: "I enjoyed the trip to Cape Cod. I learned that communication is one of the key components to what makes a good council. I also learned that failing is apart of life and it will make you stronger."
Irelyn Pottle: "I had enjoyed all the time I spent on the trip with my peers and have had many take aways both in student council and personally. However one of the most important take ways I’ve gotten from this trip is that I think our school would benefit from some changes. Some people in our school disagree with how our school runs some things but they do not try to help solve the problems that we have at our school. That’s why I think that if we as a community put more effort into being more involved, being open to change and new ideas I think that as simple as that sounds it could go a long way and make our school a better place for all."
Jayden Casey: "I had a great time. I loved the whole experience; meeting new people, the different activities we did, learning new things other school did that was successful, the food, getting to become closer with kids at our own school, the speeches given and the dances. It really highlighted that all the efforts and stuff for student council and different fundraisers can be accomplished and accomplish so much more than anticipated. It was really cool to see all these people who really care, want to improve and succeed all in the same room and come and work together."
Georgia LaPierre: "At the MASC conference I learned skills like speaking up, voicing my opinions, and confidently taking charge. I also had the opportunity to improve my public speaking, which was something I needed to work on."
Niel Duszlak: "The MASC Confrence displayed and taught me skills such as leadership, public speaking, and communication. Overall it was an amazing experience and a valuable trip."
Tais Tapia: "At the Masc conference i learned about the importance of paying attention to the people around you. I learned that in order to be a good leader, you need to keep all of your peers in mind. I also learned how important it is to have school spirit. Seeing how excited all the other groups were to represent their schools made me realize that we are slacking in that department. It inspired me to help make Bartlett a school to be proud of."
Drama Club
Students from the Drama Club are learning to sew! This past week, students began to familiarize themselves with a sewing machine and sewing tools and started a small pillow project. In addition, 3 of our students have completed the NFHS Theater Safety and have been awarded their certificates. Congratulations to Victor Almodovar, Estella Capone, and Aiden Castillo.

Mr. Duque's Principles of Engineering Classroom
Principles of Engineering students spent the week using their newly acquired programming skills to design, build, and program sensor-equipped cars with motors. Each car was designed to start when its rear sensor was activated by the previous car and to stop when it triggered the starting mechanism of the next vehicle.
Mr. Duque's Introduction to Engineering Classroom
IED students created kit wind turbines intended to charge rechargeable batteries. Over the past week, they measured and designed models of their turbines using the CAD program OnShape. These virtual models will serve as the foundation for designing and 3D printing mounting systems, enabling the turbines to be securely attached to various locations such as rooftops, trees, tables, window sills, and even car roofs.

Loss of Points/Credit due to absences -
5-9 unexcused absences from a class will lose 10 points from their grade in that class for that quarter.

Process 1 - Students can recover those lost points in the following quarter, if and only if, they have no more than 2 unexcused absences from that class during that quarter.
Process 2 (if last quarter of the course) - Students can work to recover lost points as soon as they reach their 5th unexcused absence by attending a 1.5 hour administrative detention session (one missed class per session). Students may attend multiple sessions to recover for multiple courses if needed. Students opting for these administrative detention sessions (ADPs) must designate which course they are attending for.
10 or more unexcused absences from a class will result in an automatic attendance failure for the quarter and receive a grade of a 40 (District Minimum Grade).
