The Weekly Roar
March 13, 2022
It's Jog-a-thon Week!
Our PTA, Parents, Staff, and Students are all looking forward to this Week's Jog-a-thon. In addition to the Fundraising being FUN, it's always a key way that our PTA earns funds to give back to the school.
What does PTA do with the funds raised through Jog-a-thon?
- Pays for all field trips including Pali Camp for 5th graders
- Purchases planners for 3rd-5th grade
- Reimburses all teachers $500 for personal money they have spent
- Pays for all assemblies including the Lunar New Year Assembly
- Organizes and pays for events like last Friday's Astronomy Night.
- Provides support to our learning committees like the Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion committee
- Coordinates and financially supports our school garden
- Beautifies our school with murals, informative bulletin boards, and painting
- Organizes and pays for our after-school enrichment like tennis, Chess Tutors, and Gardening
- Pays for Dance Consultants to bring our annual International Dinner and Dance to life.
- And much, much more......
Lions' Pride Run THIS THURSDAY!
Our biggest event of the year is happening this Thursday, March 17th! We have currently raised almost $33,000, which means about $2,000 to go for Coach Mendoza to wear a banana costume all day! And when we hit our goal of $50,000, Dr. Godbey and Ms. Nakagawa will be silly stringed by the top classes! Donations can be collected online at www.99pledges.com/fund/lionspride22 as well as turned into teachers until March 31st.
A few details:
- Please have your students wear GREEN on the day of the run. They will each be given a green tie-on headband to wear before the event.
- Please check your e-mail this week for ways to observe the event. We are still working out those details. If you are cleared and would like to volunteer at the event, please email Rocio at rocio.alvarez@gmail.com.
- This week will be full of Lion Pride fun! Students can look forward to raffle prizes and class rewards for school spirit, participation and fundraising.
We are so proud of our La Ballona students and families for coming together around this event!
Stay PAWSitive!

TK/K/1/2 Vocal Music: A message from Ms. Gallagher
Happy March! We have been having a blast in vocal music! Since our last vocal music update, all TK, Kindergarten, 1st, and 2nd grade students have been celebrating Black History Month. Our students are also learning and reading about the famous musician Trombone Shorty. Here is a read aloud of his book. We have also been practicing and performing our dance to his piece, "Hurricane Season." Ask your student to perform "Hurricane Season for you by clicking here.
In honor of Black History Month, students have also been learning the Civil Rights Freedom Song "I'm On My Way....to the Freedom Land." To learn a bit about the history of this song and to sing along, you can click here .
If you have any questions about the vocal music program, feel free to reach out directly to the vocal music teacher at: Kimberly Gallagher: kimberlygallagher@ccusd.org
Happy singing!

What is this LCAP Stakeholder Focus Group Meeting?
Attention Parents, Teachers, Staff, and Students!
We need your input! Please join your fellow school community members on Tuesday, March 15th at 3:30am/right after dismissal at the Green Tables on campus near the Soccer Field for an opportunity to share your thoughts regarding the development of next year’s Local Control Accountability Plan (LCAP). Parents may enter through the back gate.
The LCAP Site Focus Groups are intended to gather input on how CCUSD is currently utilizing its resources through Generally funded, Supplemental, and COVID funding sources. Your feedback, along with input from the other Site Focus Groups and Engagement surveys, will be shared with the LCAP Advisory Committee to develop next year's plan. Your time and attention is appreciated!
Outcomes
By the end of this session, participants will have:
Provided feedback collaboratively in small groups on the current LCAP actions and expenditures and organized their comments into categories; and
Reviewed other groups’ comments on LCAP actions and expenditures through a gallery walk;
Noted which areas of service should increase, decrease or stay the same.
Community Support Needed
THANK YOU for your help!
The La Ballona PTA would like to extend a HUGE 'thank you' to everyone who helped out at our Astronomy Night on Friday. It was a big success and we appreciated the extra hands to help set up and take down everything after the event. . Photos from it will be posted on the schools social media in a few days (Facebook/Instagram)
Restaurant Fundraiser - Sharkeys!
March 14 from 10:30 am – March 20 at 9:00 pm (4371 Glencoe Ave, Marina Del Rey)
Skip cooking for a night (or two) and help raise money for our school!
Sharky’s Woodfired Mexican Grill is hosting a fundraiser from March 14 through March 20. Every order placed in our name will be added up and Sharky’s will donate 15% of the total to our school.
La Ballona Elementary School will compete with another local school to see who can raise the most money during those seven days, so it’s important we ALL participate! The school that raises the most money over the course of the week advances in a competition to earn an additional donation from Sharky’s.
- For in-person or phone orders, tell them you’re ordering for La Ballona Elementary School
- For online orders, enter LA BALLONA for your payment method
- For mobile phone orders, enter LA BALLONA in the order type/additional details
Sharky’s Marina del Rey is open daily from 10:30 a.m. to 9:00 p.m.
La Ballona 5th Grade Recipe Book needs more Recipes!!
The fifth grade committee is putting together a school cookbook for our Class of 2022 legacy project. We would like to have 1-3 of your favorite recipes as soon as possible (we may be able to add more if space permits). We will select one or more of your recipes to be included in our cookbook; your name will even be printed in the cookbook with each of your own recipes! Please include recipes that reflect your culture, holiday recipes, easy weeknight meals, or ones that are special to your family. If your student is in fifth grade, your recipe will definitely be included. We will include recipes from other grades as space permits.
