Letter from the Principal
Dear Millis High School Families,
This weekend, we are excited to welcome back the Class of 1974, who will be celebrating their 50th reunion! I just wrapped up a school tour this afternoon with members of the class and they seem like an awesome group. It was special to hear about their former teachers and administrators as we toured the building.
It has been a busy week here at MHS, filled with excitement and engagement. Our Student Council successfully ran their first entire school assembly, where various clubs shared their announcements, and we celebrated our Students of the Month. A special highlight was our student Mohawk Council's presentation, which provided valuable insights into the history of the Iroquois. It was a wonderful opportunity for our students to learn and appreciate past history. You can find pictures of the event below in this newsletter.
In the classroom this week, I was able to visit to Mr. Fallon’s physical education class where I had the pleasure of learning and playing pickleball alongside some of our sophomores. In Ms. Ziemba's AP Psychology class, I was impressed to see students visually organizing and grappling with the sequence of neurons firing when the human hand touches something hot. This afternoon I joined Mr. Fallon's history class out on the Mohawk Trail to learn more about the Five Nations of the Iroquois. Check out our student art work in the newsletter below!
I would like to extend my heartfelt thank you to Ms. Dunn and Ms. Knabel for their expertise during our evening parent presentation on college admissions. Their guidance and insights were invaluable for many of our families navigating this important process.
Good luck to the girls’ volleyball teams who are playing at home tonight! The freshmen game will start at 4:45, JV at 5:45 and varsity will be starting at 6:45. Our football team will be away Saturday at 12:00 against Blackstone-Milliville. Go Mohawks!
Lastly, I am excited to participate in the Millis’ Boosters Back to School 5K Race this Sunday morning. I encourage everyone to come out and join us for a fun day of community and fitness!
Have a great weekend,
Patrick Nash

PSAT and Pre-ACT
Attention Parents/Guardians of Juniors
Millis High School will be offering the PSAT-NMSQT to juniors on Saturday, October 26th.
The PSAT, or Preliminary Scholastic Aptitude Test/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test, is a “practice” version of the SAT, one of two college entrance exams available to students. It is an excellent predictor of how a student will score on the SAT. The PSAT helps prepare our juniors for the SAT, which they will be taking this coming Spring. The PSAT/NMSQT will help students better understand their abilities, determine eligibility for national scholarships and recognition programs, and enable them to receive information directly from colleges. We recommend that all juniors take the PSAT.
On October 26th, the exam will begin at 8:30am. Students should arrive by 8:20am to find their room assignments, and come prepared with a chromebook, charger, several number two pencils and a calculator. The exam requires approximately 2½ hours. Students may expect to finish between 11:00am-11:30pm. All students will be dismissed at the same time. Please contact Riley Dunn rdunn@millisschools.org with any questions.
********
Attention Parents/Guardians of Sophomores:
Millis High School will be offering the Pre-ACT to sophomores on Saturday, October 26th, starting at 8am. The Pre-ACT is a practice ACT, one of the two college entrance exams available to students. No preparation is required for the Pre-ACT. The Pre-ACT is a multiple choice test consisting of questions in English, Math, Reading, and Science.
On October 26th, students should arrive at 7:50am to find their room assignments and come prepared with several number two pencils and a calculator. The exam requires approximately 3 ½- 4 hours, so students should expect to finish between 11:30am - 12:00pm. All students will be dismissed at the same time.
Upcoming screenings in the school health office
Grade 9 postural screening will begin in October. The purpose of the postural (scoliosis) screening is to find early signs of possible spinal problems in children grades 5th-9th. If the nurse has any concerns she will notify you. The students will be screened individually.
Grade 10 will begin mandated screening in November. This screening includes height, weight, vision and hearing. This will take place in the health office.
If your child has already been screened by your doctor and you wish to opt out of any of the screenings or if you have any questions please email Lynn Molinari

Letter from the Principal
Dear Parents and Guardians,
I wanted to take a moment to express my gratitude for your enthusiastic participation in our Open House last night! It was wonderful to see so many new and familiar faces, and the energy you brought into our building truly made the event a success. Your engagement in your children’s education is invaluable, and I appreciate your continued support. We have linked the Open House presentation below.
This week in the classroom, I had the opportunity to visit Ms. Ames' 12th grade Spanish class. I was genuinely impressed by the students' ability to speak completely in the target language, including a lot of smiles and laughs. It’s clear that they are thriving in this environment, and it is a testament to the hard work of both Ms. Ames and her students. Across the hallway, Mr. Panciocco’s Spanish class was engaged in a competitive trivia activity that featured topics such as Millis faculty and Tri-Valley Mascots. You can also check out a photo of our environmental science class in their outdoor discovery lab down below!
Additionally, I am excited to share that college representatives have begun returning to our school to meet with interested seniors. This is an excellent opportunity for our students to gather information and ask questions about their future options. I encourage seniors to take advantage of these visits and engage with the representatives.
Today’s Friday night fun features our home girls’ varsity volleyball team starting at 6:00 PM in the gym. The girls' freshmen volleyball team plays at 4:00 pm and the JV team will play at 5:00 PM. The Millis Mohawks’ football team will be on the road at Weston High School tonight at 6:00 PM.
Thank you once again for your involvement and support!
Warm regards,

After their presentation, a representative from the Massachusetts Educational Financing Authority (http://www.mefa.org), will be on hand to give an overview of the financial aid process, including types of financial aid, how to apply, and determining financing options for your family. You will be able to access the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) beginning in December, so this is a great opportunity to get your questions answered about this important process.
Thank you, and we look forward to seeing many of you on September 25!

Numerous fundraising activities will occur throughout this season, and we expect volunteer assistance from the MYBA community to work concession stands at MHS and MYBA games in order to offset MYBA costs (more details to follow re: how to sign up to help).

Letter from the Principal
Dear Parents and Guardians,
I wanted to take a moment to share some of the engaging and enriching activities that have taken place at our school over the past week.
On Wednesday during Flex block, our students had the opportunity to explore a variety of clubs and activities at our annual Club and Activities Fair. This event was a great success, providing students with a chance to learn more about the diverse extracurricular opportunities available to them and to find new ways to get involved in our school community. Please scroll down the newsletter to see pictures of the fair below!
In addition to the fair this week, I had the pleasure of visiting several classrooms to observe and participate in some of the exciting learning experiences our students are engaged in:
Mr. Bigelow's AP Human Geography Class: Students were deep into their studies on population growth across different countries. It was impressive to see their analytical skills and their understanding of global demographic trends.
Mr. Neville's Financial Literacy Class: Students were comparing lending rates from traditional and online banks, as well as credit unions. Their discussions on financial decision-making and the practical applications of this knowledge were both insightful and informative.
Ms. Bartley's British Literature Class: Students showcased their visual interpretations of a passage from Roald Dahl’s "The Landlady." It was wonderful to see their creativity and how they connected their artistic expressions to their literary analysis.
These activities and classroom experiences highlight the dynamic and diverse learning environment we strive to create for our students.
If you are looking for some Friday night fun, please come out and support our sports teams and band tonight!!! We have our football home opener at 6:00 p.m. against Sutton. Our school band will be performing at halftime. Over on our volleyball court, our girls’ varsity volleyball team will be playing against Medway starting at 5:45 p.m.
I hope you have a great weekend!
Warm regards,

Letter from the Principal
Dear Parents and Guardians,
We hope this message finds you well. As we wrap up an engaging week at Millis High, we wanted to share some highlights and updates with you.
On Wednesday, our students participated in their summer reading groups, diving into their chosen texts. I observed rich discussions that fostered critical thinking and enhanced students' understanding of the material. It was fantastic to see the enthusiasm and intellectual curiosity that these discussions sparked among our students and staff.
In the classroom, teachers have begun to delve into their respective subjects with renewed energy. Students are engaging with the content, and the academic rigor is starting to ramp up. We’re excited to see our students grow as they tackle more challenging material.
In addition to academic advancements, our athletic programs have kicked off with a lot of energy and enthusiasm. Our student-athletes have been making a strong impression out on the fields, courts and courses, bringing excitement to our athletic venues. A couple of highlights include a hole-in-one by a member of our boys’ golf team and strong team wins by our girls' volleyball and soccer teams. We encourage you to come out and support them as they compete and showcase their talents.
Have a great weekend,
Patrick Nash

Engineering is back in Millis!
Mrs. Streck’s honors Engineer Your World class starts the year in motion as they work on building their first prototypes of functional mini cars. Using specific materials, each pairing was given a different form of instructions, all tasked with building the same vessel. So far students are learning how to create proper documentation, innovate new ideas, implement teamwork strategies, and collaborate with peers of different personality types. Following the building process, the groups launched their cars. William Ferguson led the class as his car moved forward 158 cm.

A Letter From The Principal
8/30/2024
Dear Parents and Guardians,
I am thrilled to share that our first two days of school went smoothly. Walking through the hallways, I was greeted with vibrant energy and the sight of our Small School, Big Family community coming alive. Our hallways and classrooms were bustling with activity, and it was heartening to see so many smiling faces.

Our dedicated teachers have been incredibly supportive, creating a welcoming and engaging environment that has made these first few days memorable. It's clear that this is going to be a fantastic year filled with growth, learning and countless achievements.

Chromebooks
Chromebooks were distributed on Wednesday during homeroom for all new to Millis students. Returning students that dropped their Chromebook for the summer also received their Chromebook during homeroom.
If your student’s device stops working or requires maintenance, please have them email our Tech Department at helpdesk@millisschools.org to advise they have an issue. Students can also bring their device to the Library and speak to a student at the SHOP desk. The SHOP desk is our student technology team that now handles the loaner devices. If there are no students present at the SHOP desk, please see our librarian, Mr. Carter, at the circulation desk. The same is true if they forget their device at home. They can go to the Library and borrow a device and/or charger any day school is in session as long as supply lasts. We have also created a Chromebook Care and Use Guide for everything Chromebook related.
Insurance for Chromebooks is suggested and the information can be accessed below.
School Lunch & Breakfast Free for all students
School lunch continues to be FREE to all students this year. Every student is eligible to receive one free breakfast and one free lunch each daily, and you can check out the menus here. If you feel your family qualifies for free and reduced lunch, you should still fill out the Household Application for Free and Reduced Price Meals for the 2024-2025 school year. The application is used to determine qualification for free transportation, as well as waivers, such as athletic fees.
2024-25 MHS Parent/Student Handbook
Now is a great time to familiarize yourself with the 2024-25 Millis High School Parent/Student Handbook. Students will be required to sign off on the fact they read through the handbook and understand the school policies as we head into the new school year.

.........................................................................

If your student is going to be late to school, a parent/guardian must contact the office, by or before 8:00 AM. The office can be reached one of the following ways:
Attendance line: 508-906-3713
Attendance email: hsattendance@millisschools.org
or you may send your student in with a note
If we don’t hear from a parent/guardian, the tardy will be unexcused. Upon arrival at school, the student should go directly to the office and sign in.
Dismissals
If your student needs to be dismissed, a parent/guardian must send their student in with a note or email the office at hsattendance@millisschools.org, listing the dismissal time and reason. Just a reminder that driving hours should not be scheduled during the school day, and do not constitute excused time away from school.
Phone calls for dismissals are not permitted.
Students are expected to check in with the office to confirm their dismissal and receive a pass. If we do not receive a note, a parent or guardian must come into the office to sign their student out at the time of dismissal. Please make every effort to adhere to this dismissal policy to minimize disruptions to class time. Please also be mindful of how a dismissal may impact your student’s eligibility to participate in extracurricular activities.
- Activities Eligibility Dismissal: If your student is involved in extracurricular activities and needs to be dismissed during the school day, they will need to provide a note from the place of their appointment (not a parental note) so they remain eligible to play or practice.
- Medical Dismissal: Any student requesting to leave for any kind of medical reason must go through the nurse’s office.
- Emergency Dismissal: In the event of a true emergency, a parent/guardian should contact the office. Every attempt will be made to expedite the dismissal. Please note, driving hours scheduled during the school day are not considered an emergency nor excusable under any circumstance. Every effort should be made to complete these hours outside of school hours.
Absence
If your student needs to be absent from school, a parent/guardian must notify the office via the attendance line at 508-906-3713 or by emailing hsattendance@millisschools.org as close to 8:00 AM as possible. If we don’t hear from a parent/guardian, the absence is unexcused and the student will be marked as truant. Attendance at school is incredibly important, and every effort possible should be made to maintain regular attendance at the high school.
