🐝 Honey in the House! 🐝
Our bees are currently in California pollinating produce but their honey is here! Stop by our gift shop for a sweet taste of our garden variety as well as other local jars of Orange Blossom, Mangrove, Wildflower, and Palmetto. We'd like to give a special THANK YOU to Derrik at Darling Bees & Northwest Pollinators for providing so many educational bee keeping classes for us this spring. If you have land and are interested in housing bee boxes like us, give him a call (509)760-6628.
🌱 Did you know that we have all 3 species of mangrove conserved on our land? 🌱
Red Mangrove (Rhizophora mangle)
The roots and small twigs have a reddish-to-pinkish tone that is especially noticeable when wet but the most recognizable characteristics of the red mangrove are the exposed roots that create a mass entanglement of arches that make them impenetrable to humans but great nursery and habitat for fish.
Black mangrove (Avicennia germinans)
The Black Mangrove looks more like a tree than the outstretched roots of the Red Mangrove. If you look closely at the leaves, you may see crystals of salt on the surface. This is one of the ways the Black Mangrove has adapted to live in a saltwater environment that would kill other plants. They are able to take up saltwater, use the water, and put the salt out onto their leaves.
White mangrove (Laguncularia racemosa)
These mangroves are usually found on higher ground than its two counterparts. It is best known for the fragrant white flowers that bloom nearly year-round. Mangroves are viviparous meaning they reproduce from seeds that germinate within the fruit. Each fruit pod contains one seed and like the fruit of the red and black mangrove, these can also float for long periods before the sapling roots.
🌺 Membership Matters! 🌳
Reciprocity to Naples Botanical
This May and June, our members can visit Naples Botanical Gardens for free! While this garden doesn't participate in AHS, they are partnering with us for these two months. All you have to do is show your Peace River Gardens Membership card! That means we're accepting Naples' members, too!
🌀 Hurricane Recovery Continues 🔨
This beautiful new roof to our gazebo was installed last month. Designed and built by Jacob Kulin, the sculptor of our Steel Palm, this roof was just one of many projects in our hurricane recovery journey. Most of our nearly $500K in loses were not covered by insurance and there is still much to be done! If you would like to contribute to our continued hurricane recovery, please click below.
We are embarking on a beautiful new welcome space with will include permanent seating with shade. We have 10 opportunities available to recognize your loved one and demonstrate your admiration. A plaque can be purchased with a section of the bench to memorialize the special person in your life for just $3,000. Not only does this express your reverence, it provides necessary comfort to our guests with limited mobility - making for a truly meaningful gift! If you are interested in this opportunity please email our Executive Director, Tanna Horner or call (941)757-3469.
