Weeks 5-6 (9/23 - 10/4)

What's Going on at Deal?
Student-Led Conference Sign-Up
Deal will host student-led conferences on Thursday, October 10th from 12-7pm. During conferences, students will lead a discussion with their family member(s) and their advisor. Students will use Advisory sessions ahead of conference day to reflect on the start of their year, set goals, and prepare for leading the conference.
Beginning last week, Advisors sent families the sign-up website and their specific "entry code." The online appointment system is available in English and Spanish and requires an email account. For support signing up for a conference, please contact your student's Advisor. If you are uncertain who your student's advisor is, please check Aspen or contact their team directly.
Our hope is that all 8th grade families take advantage of this opportunity to reflect on their student's progress and set goals for the year.
World Language Trip Updates
Thank you to the families and students who were able to attend last week's family interest meeting. If you were not able to attend, you can find the slides from yesterday's general session at this link.
Please note that trips are still in the approval process with DCPS. Once Deal receives final approval, links to register for the trip will be shared via team newsletters. Thank you for your patience as we make final arrangements for these trips.

National Junior Honors Society Update
If your student is interested in joining the NJHS in their 8th grade year, please review the following requirements:
Submit 15 hours of Community Service by May 2nd, 2025. I have attached the form to fill out for Community Service. The form must be completed. Fillable_Community_Service_Hours_Form.pdf
Your student must also be on Honor Role for terms 1-3.
In October there will be an application form for interested students to apply to NJHS. The application and due dates will be sent out via your student's grade level team newsletters.
A student is not eligible to qualify for NJHS if they receive a suspension.
If you have any questions, please feel free to reach out to me at stephanie.lienemann@k12.dc.gov.
8th grade students who were accepted in to NJHS in their 7th grade year do not need to reapply to join, but must maintain their good academic, behavioral, and attendance standing.
On-Time Arrival
Instruction at Deal begins at 8:45 AM and ends at 3:15 PM. To ensure they have time to clear security, visit their lockers, and make it to class before the bell, students should plan to arrive at Deal no later than 8:20 AM. We appreciate your support to build good habits early in the year.

Mr. Haller - Woolloomooloo Team Lead – Math/ELA
Hello Woolloomooloo Families!
It has been an exciting week here on Team Woolloomooloo . If your scholar missed Picture Day, no worries! There will be make up dates in the upcoming weeks in October. Be on the lookout for dates in our upcoming newsletter. Academic Advising has begun! We are asking that scholars use this time to complete work in their classes and check in with their team teachers to work on missing assignments. Aspen is a great tool for both parents and students to check grades and email their teachers with any questions.
Thank you to all those parents that have donated to our Amazon Wishlist! Your donations are greatly appreciated here on Team Woolloomooloo . Our wish list is still open and available for those that would like to still donate. Again, thank you so much for helping us out!
Attached is the PowerPoint for our teams incentive program - Mooloo-Mula - please check it out and encourage our scholars to be the best to earn prizes.
We are also looking forward to having a fun team building activity that will be taking place in the near future (10/17) on Thursday during our advisory period in the auditorium. I don't want to give too much away, but we are hopeful that the students will enjoy our fun game/team building activity we've got planned. Pictures will follow!
Have a great weekend and enjoy the last days of September!

Mr. Selph - History
This week in I&S has been focused on wrapping up the first half of Term 1 strong and bringing in some interactions between the Europeans, Native Americans and Africans in early colonial North America. We started the week with a deep dive into the Columbian Exchange, thinking about what was exchanged and brought between Europe and North America after Columbus’ arrival to North America. We then shifted gears to West Africa, exploring the rich tapestry of cultures in that area like the Asante and Dahomey and rise of leaders like Mansa Musa and Queen Nzingha. We then thought about the Triangular Trade, how it impacted Africans forced to leave their homes and work for European profit and the horrors of the slave trade. We closed the week with a look at resistance to colonization and slavery from Native Americans and Africans, going over examples like the Stono Rebellion, the efforts of Gaspar Yanga in Mexico and the Pueblo Uprising of 1680 against the Spanish. Next week is all about starting our sub-unit on the regional differences between English colonies and making our first formative: a timeline with 2 events chosen from said timeline to illustrate the conflict and cooperation between the Europeans, Africans and Native Americans!
IMPORTANT ASSIGNMENTS FROM THIS WEEK
West African Kingdoms Nearpod – Canvas Assignment with Nearpod link (NO CODE REQUIRED, JUST NAME) for students to learn about West African Kingdoms like Asante and Dahomey
RESISTANCE Station Walk Activity – Canvas Cloud Assignment with resources available on paper and in Canvas Modules, Unit 1 to answer questions about various moments of African and Native American resistance to slavery and colonization, due before class starts Monday 9/30 in Canvas Assignments!
Ms. Mbanwie - Science
This week in science, we completed the first part of the periodic table, identifying mass number, atomic number, protons, neutrons and electrons of every atom. Also, students completed their first unit formative assessment. In addition, we started organization of the periodic table into groups and periods. Finally, students learned how to cite books and articles using the MLA format.
Next week, we will complete organization of the periodic table, Isotopes, Ions and the Bohr’s model of an atom. Also, we will look at the differences between atoms, elements, compounds and molecules.
Reminders
- Homework is due on Wednesday at 11:59pm.
- Adopt an Element project is due on 10/03/2024 at 11:59pm.
Mr. Turchetta - English/Language Arts
Hello everyone!
It was fantastic to meet and see you all on Back to School Night!
This week, we completed RCT 1 and students did a sensory and descriptive language formative. Students took a multiple choice quiz on act 1, scene 1 in A Raisin in the Sun which can be found on Canvas. They also read scene 2 and completed text dependent questions which can be found on Canvas.
Next week, we will reflect on the formative and prepare for a summative on sensory and descriptive language. We will discuss and do activities that help students better understand act 1, scene 2 in A Raisin in the Sun.
If students need to access a copy of A Raisin in the Sun, there is a pdf version in the Unit 1: Dreaming in America module on Canvas.
Have a great weekend!
Deal Library Corner
The library orientations have completed for all students! Most students have now checked out at least one book from the library! 6th grade students should be almost ready to return their books if they haven't already. Notices will go out next week for 6th students who have overdue materials and over the following two weeks for 7th and 8th graders.
Students are able to see their current loans by accessing their library accounts through the Clever app called "Destiny Discover". They can follow the process below to see items that they have checked out:
Log into Clever (clever.com/in/dcpsk12)
Search "Destiny Discover" or navigate to the Library Resources section and click on the icon.
Click on the "My Stuff" link at the top of the screen to see any items that are checked out.
Students who have lost materials or see items that may be linked to their account by mistake should speak with Mr. Reichlen.
There are no fines or penalties for lost materials. Donations of hard cover titles of middle school-age-appropriate works in good condition are always accepted if families are able to replace lost materials.
