Recipes & Tips
Napa Cabbage
Napa cabbage typically has thick, big white ribs and tender, pale green leaves but it can also be a beautiful purple in color. It’s an oblong, rather than round, cabbage. Because this type of cabbage originated in China, it’s sometimes referred to as “Chinese cabbage.” That said, it has a rich history of use in plenty of other East Asian countries.
One of the most common uses of Napa cabbage is in kimchi but it is also fabulous in your favorite salads, in a slaw, or popped into your next stir-fry. It’s hearty enough to add crunch without being so tough that it needs a massage or marinade before being consumed raw. There is an Asian grocery store that my family likes to visit that keeps a sign by the Napa cabbage, calling it "The King of Cabbages."
Pears
Pears are members of the Rosaceae plant family, along with apples, apricots, cherries, peaches, and several other fruits and berries. Pears can range in texture, color, crispness, juiciness and sweetness. Pears are a great source of antioxidants, fiber, potassium, and vitamin C. Many of us probably just grab a pear and take a bite or slice it into a bowl...but there are so many different ways to incorporate pears into your daily menus!
Apples
It's that time of year in Ohio when all the farm markets start having local apples for sale and families head out for some apple picking fun. GG visited a friend this week and picked some of his apples to share with you. (Next week we will head out to Huffman's for our annual apple picking field trip and you will have other delicious apples!) Today's apples are organically grown and may not be the most picture-perfect but they will still deliver apple-y goodness!
