Our Learning Community...
We hope you are staying cool! As we continue to experience high temperatures, we want to ensure that your child stays cool, comfortable, and ready to learn throughout the day. Please keep the following tips in mind when preparing your child for school during hot weather:
Light, Breathable Clothing: Dress your child in lightweight and loose-fitting clothing to help them stay cool. Light-colored fabrics are best for reflecting heat.
Hydration: Please send your child with a reusable water bottle, labeled with their name, to stay hydrated throughout the day. We will encourage frequent water breaks and students have access to water bottle refill stations around the campus.
Sun Protection: Consider applying sunscreen before school. A hat or cap can also help protect them from direct sunlight.
Lunch and Snacks: Sending fresh, cool snacks like fruits or veggies can help keep your child refreshed. Please ensure their lunchbox contains items that won’t spoil in the heat.
Indoor Breaks/Indoor Recess: All classrooms and learning spaces are air conditioned. In addition, our team will ensure that students get plenty of opportunities to cool off in air-conditioned areas during particularly hot periods.
It should cool off by the end of the week just in time for the 1st PTA Family event of the year here at Jones. The Bike Rodeo will be on the blacktop from 5:30-7:30pm with food for purchase at a Taco Truck and Kona Ice. The Bike Rodeo is a fun, interactive, and educational event to teach students how to be safer pedestrians, bicyclists, and scooter riders. Students will walk, ride, and roll through a course filled with skills based challenges, designed to enhance both their handling and understand of their equipment. Bring your own bike, scooter, or skates and helmets! We hope to see you there!

Additional Resources for Families...
Books can be one of the most powerful ways to support children in understanding and coping with challenging situations, including the aftermath of gun violence. There are several picture books that thoughtfully and sensitively address themes of safety, community, and healing after trauma. These books can help your family process their feelings, encourage open conversations, and offer hope during difficult times.
Here are a few recommendations:
"The Breaking News" by Sarah Lynne Reul
This heartfelt story shows how a community reacts to sad news and demonstrates that even small acts of kindness can bring hope in dark times."The Rabbit Listened" by Cori Doerrfeld
A gentle book that emphasizes the importance of listening to someone who is hurting, making it a powerful resource for helping children express and process their emotions."Come With Me" by Holly M. McGhee
This story highlights how kindness, compassion, and bravery can counteract feelings of fear and uncertainty in times of crisis."Why Do We Cry?" by Fran Pintadera
This beautiful book explores the reasons people cry and affirms that it is okay to express feelings of sadness, worry, and confusion.
These books (and more linked below) can be a starting point for you to foster difficult conversations in a way that is approachable for young children. Our counseling website also offers additional resources for families to support talking about School Safety and Trauma.
Please reach out to our counselor Ms. Vu (nvu@sandi.net or (619) 605-8800 x3041) if your child is in need of additional support.
San Diego Unified Food Services
Breakfast & Lunch Menus...
Here is a link to the San Diego Unified Food Services Website where you can find allergy and nutritional information on foods served at schools. Foods not found on our regular school site menu will be listed individually under the "Alternate Menu Items" section.
If you ever have general questions about the food services at school sites you can reach out to foodandnutritionservices@sandi.net. To connect directly with the Jones Cafe Manager you can email jonecafe@sandi.net (yes, that email is correct, there is no "s").
SD United for Democracy...
San Diego Unified is dedicated to fostering a vibrant, informed, and engaged community through the power of education and dialogue. To help our students to be collaborative communicators, socially-aware agents of change, and critically-thinking digital citizens, our nonpartisan SD Unified for Democracy project offers resources to develop skills to engage in civil discourse, identify bias and credibility, debate and maintain a focus on issues, and repair harm that arises from political rhetoric.
The link below offers resources and tools adults can use to engage with and learn alongside children and teens during the election cycle and beyond.
