Week 14
I hope that this week back at school has felt positive for your students. This week our winter sports began. The energy inside the building through out the evenings is super positive and we look forward to students building skills in these extra-curricular areas that then transfer over into other parts of their lives. Thanks to Dustin Hunt and all of our coaches for the commitment you make to ensuring students have a positive experience.
Next week we will have our last early release day of 2024! We look forward to students experiencing an array of awesome exploratories, a fun assembly and some time to make up work missed! Please keep in mind that our school day ends at 12:45 on early release days!
I hope that you have a great weekend
Best,
Michaela

From The MYP Coordinators
As part of their Adventure Unit in Language & Literature, 6th graders on Teams 1 and 2 wrote stories from the perspective of climbers on Mount Everest. Students spent time researching Mount Everest prior to this assignment and are incorporating information from their research into their narratives. This assignment asks students to pick a specific, dramatic moment in time that might occur during a climb up Mount Everest, and to focus on using strong sensory language to make the story engaging for the reader. Through this assignment, students are delving into the inquiry question of "What can we learn about the world, people within the world, and ourselves through adventure stories?" Thank you to Ms. Bauer and Mr. Petrosino for offering students this great writing experience!
Below, enjoy these excerpts from four 6th graders’ stories:
-The wind galloped in the air, the snow pierced through the sky like arrows, avalanches rumbled down the side of the mountains. Ice chunks cracked and fell off the side of caverns falling down & down & down to be consumed by the dark bottom, of a pit of death. And there I was at the bottom of the mountain about to make the biggest mistake of my life. - MYLES
-I knew avalanches happen a lot on Everest. People come down from their climbs all the time because of them. Older Sherpas had told me about them too, but I never really thought one would happen to me. I guess you never think anything bad will happen until it does. It felt like a truck hit me. Like 5 trucks hit me. It was terrifying, and it was like I was surrounded by screams. -CLAIRE
-I stepped onto the bridge. See, I told myself, this isn't so scary! I can do this! I was about halfway across when the hunk of ice fell. I saw it in slow-motion, a piece of ice falling from an overhanging snow cover. It hit the “bridge” and it and a chunk of the bridge fell. Coming off of the gap came cracks, spreading toward us. “Run!” Rishi said. The sherpas ahead ran across, and I followed. They all made it across, but the vibrations from their feet had created another gap. I stood on a snow island, and that island was going to collapse! -KAISA
-As I neared the chasm, I felt a cold wind on my face. Something felt off. I climbed out over the chasm, clinging tightly to the ladder as I went. I could see the bottom. It was only about 50 feet deep, which was abnormal for chasms on Everest which are usually well over 100 feet deep. As I approached the middle of the ladder, I heard a groaning sound coming from the ice.
“Come back!” Devi shouted, But it was too late, the ice was giving way at the points where the
ladder connected to the edges of the chasm. - SEBASTIAN

Spreading Holiday Cheer!
The MUMS Counseling Office is coordinating efforts to help support families over the upcoming holidays. We are welcoming donations of gift cards to local or online businesses that families can use to purchase gifts. Popular requests include TJ Maxx, art supplies, Carhartt clothing (Agway) and games. If you would like to support gift giving for a MUMS student, donations can be brought to the Main Office or Counseling Office by December 13th. We are extremely grateful for your show of caring for the MUMS community.
