PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE
Hello FMS friends and families,
At FMS we believe there is no such thing as bad weather, just bad clothing for the weather. Unless it is deemed to be unsafe, we try to get the students outside everyday. Make sure you check the weekly weather so the students are prepared to go outside. It is also a good idea to pack extra socks and sweatpants just in case. While we do not maintain a stockpile of snow/rain gear, we are able to support families in need. Please do not hesitate to reach out if your child is in need of outerwear to support them enjoying their time outside.

FROM THE NURSE
It's been a busy week in the nurse's office as we settle into a new school year.
Prevention is key to preventing illness. We encourage the students to get plenty of rest (8-10 hours of sleep for this age group), washing hands especially before eating, drinking water and eating a healthy diet. Your support and encouragement with these healthy habits can help students stay well and thrive at school.
Another way to stay healthy and keep the school healthy is to get a flu vaccine- A Flu vaccine clinic will be held at FMS on Wednesday October 16th. This service is being provided by MaineHealth/ School based health center. Paper permission forms are going home soon. Be on the lookout.
Mosquito borne illnesses on the rise in some counties in Maine:
Current Situation
In recent weeks, the Maine CDC has reported:
West Nile virus (WNV) in 15 wild birds and in one human
Eastern Equine Encephalitis (EEE) virus in 4 horses, 2 emus, 1 llama, and 1 wild turkey
Jamestown Canyon Virus (JCV) in 4 mosquito pools (groups of up to 50 mosquitoes regularly tested as part of routine surveillance)
Presence of these viruses in animals indicates that mosquitos in certain regions of our state do carry the viruses and therefore pose a risk to humans.
Maine CDC has identified the following counties as being high risk: Cumberland, Kennebec, Penobscot, Somerset, and Waldo counties. All other counties are at an elevated risk at this time. All three of these viruses are spread through the bite of an infected mosquito and usually start with flu-like symptoms in humans.
The risk for getting a mosquito-borne disease is highest from dusk to dawn and when temperatures are above 50°F (especially above 60°F), since this is when mosquitoes are most active. Risk from mosquito bites is expected to continue until two hard frosts kill the mosquitoes this fall/winter. The best way to prevent mosquito-borne diseases is to prevent mosquito bites.
-Use mosquito repellent when you go outside, especially dusk to dawn when mosquitoes are most active.
-When possible wear long sleeved shirts and pants
-Remove standing water where mosquitoes breed
-make sure your screens are tight and free of holes
