Franklin Families and Students,
This week we held our final Franklin Talks of the year. We want to thank our students for their participation as well as our staff and student co-facilitators who helped guide these conversations. We also want to thank our parents who participated in the Franklin Talks - Family version. This year as a community we discussed education and through the lenses of race, gender, socio-economic status, and disability, looked at how school environments can create and perpetuate inequitable experiences and outcomes for students. As a school community dedicated to creating change, especially for our most historically-underrepresented students, we used our last session to consider reimagining our school and creating action plans focusing on “What can we do to make Franklin a more equitable place for learning?” What should the building look like? What discussions and conversation topics are we having in class? What curriculum and materials are we providing our students? How will we interact with one another, especially when there may be a difference of opinion?
Sadly, there continue to be traumatic events and actions that take place both nationally, locally, and even within our own school district where students do not feel seen, heard, supported, or protected, and receive an unjust school experience due to their race, gender, ability, or socioeconomic status. These events serve as a strong reminder for the collective need of our society to address this persistent problem. While these events make the national and local headlines there are also a countless number of conscious and unconscious microaggressions that take place daily, which also directly and indirectly impact the lives of our students, families, friends, and loved ones.
While our final session concluded this week, I do hope this important work carries on. We encourage our staff and students to continue these conversations in the classroom, and also encourage our families and students to have these conversations at home. Our diversity and willingness to create brave spaces within our community is what makes us Franklin STRONG. I invite us all to continue these conversations as we grow together, while continuing to work collaboratively towards having a safe, welcoming, and inclusive school community for ALL students.
Franklin STRONG,
Chris Frazier

The First Annual Franklin Konane Tournament is happening on Wednesday, May 31st from 3:30-5:00pm in the Library.
Konane is an ancient Hawaiian Strategy game which is a blend between Checkers and Chess. We have been selling these Konane games all year. Now, it's time to take those skills and turn them into possible prizes including free Konane Sets and gift certificates to local Hawaiian businesses.
Players in the tournament will be divided into three divisions: beginner, intermediate, and expert. If you would like to learn the rules, feel free to watch this instructional video courtesy of Mr. Stroup and Mr. Garcia.
Students who are interested in participating can fill out this survey so we can create our brackets.
NEW: UNCF Portfolio Project

They assist with writing college essays, applying for financial aid, finding scholarships and much more. Students will also be paired with a mentor to support them through the program.
*All Seniors who complete the Portfolio Project are eligible to receive a scholarship for college.
*All Juniors who complete the Portfolio Project are eligible to attend a fully funded HBCU College tour experience.
NEW: Franklin Historical Society
The Sixth Annual Franklin Historical Society will be held on Monday, June 5th from 5:00-7:00pm.
In Mr. Garcia's AP US History class, students will be designing and fabricating their own museum grade exhibits featuring narratives on whatever topics they choose.
Students then convert the entire school into a museum where they showcase their exhibit to the public. The students also design "hands on" activities where the public can directly interact with the materials. Previous activities include lassoing plastic steers, sampling cuisine, and competitive games. The students have come up with some really cool ideas this year.
Doors will open at 5:00 and refreshments are available to everyone.
TriMet Summer Passes for HS Students
Beginning next week, TriMet will be distributing free student summer transit passes to all PPS high school sites. The passes will be activated for unlimited use on TriMet, WES, C-Tran and the Portland Streetcar from June 1st until August 31st.
PPS administrators and students should know that students’ 2022-23 PPS ID/TriMet HOP cards will deactivate on June 16th, so those needing TriMet access over the summer will need to get a designated summer pass.
All PPS students are eligible for summer passes, but they are intended for those who are transit-dependent and will make use of them over the summer. It is recommended that PPS students keep their 2022-23 Student ID cards with them when using the summer passes on transit.
Please be on the lookout for more information regarding the distribution of summer passes for students.

UPDATED: PTSA Spring Appeal Raffle!
Last week the PTSA sent a community wide appeal letter to FHS families and partners. 40 donors later, we surpassed our initial $1000 match amount, so each of those donations were doubled, thanks to The Caplener Group. Each of those first 40 donors will be entered into an "early bird" raffle to win a $25 ¿Por Qué No? Taqueria gift card as a thank you from the PTSA.
We will be holding another raffle for a $25 ¿Por Qué No? Taqueria gift card for the next 50 donors, starting now. Please help us support FHS students & staff!
A message from Franklin PTSA:
Hello Franklin Families!
It appears spring is finally, well, springing. We hope this letter finds you well and excited for the final months of school. We are writing because FHS needs your help. The PTSA is requesting donations to support our students. Your donation would help purchase items for
classrooms, finance the principal’s discretionary fund, fulfill teacher requests, add to library resources, steady educator morale, show staff our appreciation and enable overall student enrichment. Your donation will help the PTSA support a learning environment where our students can thrive and reach their full potential. We understand the commitment this donation requires. However, every donation, even $10 or $20, is an investment in the future of students and education at our school.
Your donation can double thanks to The Caplener Group’s offer to match the first $1,000.00 that we receive. This local realtor has been a long-time supporter of Franklin, and The Caplener Group renews their commitment to keeping Franklin STRONG along with the rest of our community. Your donation is greatly appreciated, and don’t forget, tax deductible. Make online donations HERE (https://franklin-high-school-ptsa.square.site/), drop off cash/check donations made out to FHS PTSA at the main office or mail them to: Franklin High School PTSA, 5405 SE Woodward St., Portland, OR 97206.
If your company matches donations, please reach out to them as well. Thank you for being part of the FHS team. Go Lightning!
Sincerely,
FHS PTSA

Family Resource Navigator (FRN) Advocacy
The FRN program won't be funded by the county next year but we are still advocating for them to keep the funding. We have put together letters in English and Spanish for families to inform them about where the program currently stands and a letter script to write to Multnomah County commissioners to offer their own testimonies.
We encourage Franklin families to write letters or get involved in the public hearings happening this month. If you write a letter, please share those with Genavie Reyes and we will share them with the rest of the advocacy team to provide the Commissioners a stack of hard copy letters. If families write letters, we can collect those as well if they are not able to mail them or attend the public hearings.
These in one more upcoming hybrid public hearing on May 31st at 6:00pm and you can find more information on their website.
