Anglo European School
Bulletin for w/c 17th June 2024 - Week 1
Remembering David Abrey 9th September 1936 - 24th April 2024
This week, Mrs Gee attended David Abrey's funeral on behalf of the staff and students at the school, to celebrate the life of this lovely man whose kindness and generosity touched many of us. David was born and bought up in Ingatestone and had many wonderful stories of how Ingatestone had changed over time. He attended the boys' school in Fryerning Lane and always highly valued education. He remembered the coal and milk being delivered by horse and cart, lived through the second world war here and remembered evacuees joining the village schools. He was full of local knowledge and village history. David was a keen fisherman and loved the Norfolk broads where he had a holiday cottage there and always regaled tales of the riverbank, to our great amusement.
David was a dedicated member of the Parish Council and when the school set up the Anglo Education Trust, he attended half termly meetings with the Headteachers to build good relationships between school and the village. He was always hugely positive about our students, always reporting when they were polite, helpful or supportive of others and easily forgiving the noise and litter they sometimes created in the park on final exam days! He was always gentle with this criticism and generous with his praise and we loved him for that.
The staff and students set their clocks by him - he walked similar routes every morning with his dog and, noting, how far he was down Fryerning Lane, we knew whether we were on time to school or not! We will miss his smile, his cheery wave and the support he gave so generously to our school community.
Rest in peace David. We will miss you greatly.
Visits and Exchanges
Well done Year 7 for completing your first visit at the Anglo European school. You were fabulous and the staff are enormously proud of the way you conducted yourselves as Anglo ambassadors in France. It was a particularly poignant week to be in France, and the groups in Dinan, Avignon and Ebblinghem were aware they were joining leaders from all over the world to commemorate the 80th Anniversary of the D Day Landings. This was particularly so for Year 7 who visit the Menin Gate, the military cemeteries and the trenches. They behaved with great dignity and respect throughout these visits and were a great credit to their families and school. I know they now have a greater understanding of European history, an appreciation of the sacrifices what were made to give them the freedoms they enjoy and the ties and common humanity that binds us and ensure a more peaceful, collaborative world for the future.
Thank you to so many parents who have filled our inboxes with lovely messages of thanks for the staff who gave up their time and a weekend away from their own families to ensure this experience was so enjoyable for all our students. It is clear from these messages that you can already see the impact of the visit on their confidence, resilience and communication skills and how much they have enjoyed travelling abroad and experiencing different cultures, food and traditions. The staff have really appreciated reading your messages of thanks and we have been sharing many of them in staff briefing every morning this week. They will sleep well this weekend (staff and students!)
Year 10 are still in Paris and in the coming weeks, Year 9 travel to China and the Sixth Form travel to Krakow, Vienna and Geneva. We wish them an amazing visit and safe journeys.
Wiesbaden Visit
This week, our Year 8 and 9 students have been having an absolute blast in Wiesbaden, exploring the wonders of this magical place! Their jam-packed itinerary included visits to Schloss Freudenberg villa, Senckenberg museum and climbing Neroberg! What an adventure!
Paris Visit
This week, our Year 10 students explored the City of Lights and had an unforgettable time admiring the iconic Eiffel Tower, Sacrè Coeur and Montmartre and tasting some delicious French cheeses at Fromagerie Ganot. We hope they have had a fabulous time in this beautiful capital.
Anglo Family
Ex-student Jordanne Wood visited the school to take part in our Fringe activities last week. We took the opportunity of taking a photo with her uncle, Andrew Wood who has worked as part of the Site Team since 1978. He was also a pupil at the Ingatestone Anglo European School in 1973 so as we are celebrating our 50th Anniversary, we can also share that he will also be celebrating 50 years of being part of the Anglo Family! We are so grateful that he has decided to spend so many years at Anglo as he is a fountain of knowledge, not only of the history of the school and its fascinating stories, but also in terms of which pipes lead to which! Mrs Gee met up with Andrew and another long serving member of staff, Olive Gilbert in the kitchen to gain an insight into the early life of the Anglo, which we are sure she will share at our celebration event on 21st June.
Jordanne Wood delivered a workshop to students in which she shared her linguistic journey which now sees her travelling the Spanish speaking world combatting environmental challenging with her company 'Native to Earth'. They produce documentaries, podcasts, workshops and social media content to boost public engagement in Biodiversity Conservation, sustainability and the solutions to environmental challenges. Students were briefed with creating their own media form to help bring back pollinators to their local area. Students showed great creativity in re-working songs, designing apps and reels and Jordanne was able to visit the groups whilst they shared their work.
Track down our 50 cheeky Galavanting Gonks!
Something soft and cute is coming to the Anglo VERY SOON.
A family of no less than 50 Anglo Gonks will be visiting our school, instructed by the powers that be, to keep an eye on our Anglo Family in the lead up to our 50th Anniversary Celebrations!
Forms in each year group will be challenged to find all the secret hiding places for the chance to be crowned Gonk champions 2024!
Who will find them all?
We are excited to announce that we will be hosting our 50th Big Lunch on Friday 5th July 2024. Students will be invited to wear non-uniform on this day with a £1 donation that will be put towards buddy benches that can be enjoyed throughout the year. This can be paid via ParentPay in the usual way.
The lunch will take place during Period 4 for Years 7, 8 and 9 and Period 5 for Year 10 and Lower Sixth. Ice-cream vans will be joining us on school site which will take either cash or card. You are welcome to bring whatever you would like to enjoy your picnic, including a blanket to sit on. Picnic lunches will be available for purchase in the dining hall at £2.50 – there will be no other food available on this day.
Year 10 Students Shine in Work Experience Placements at Anglo
Year 10 students have had the opportunity to step out of the classroom and into the professional world, gaining invaluable insights and practical experience through the work experience programme. Students worked in a variety of local businesses, organisations, and institutions, ranging from healthcare and engineering to retail and hospitality. The work experience programme aims to help students develop a range of essential skills including teamwork, communication, problem-solving, and time management. These placements allow students to explore potential career paths, understand workplace expectations, and build confidence in a professional setting. We look forward to welcoming them all back to school next week and listening to their individual experiences.
We have been fortunate to have had some Year 10 students do their work experience in event management with us in school. Jasmim, Sofia, Daisy, Ireoluwa and Rex all helped to prepare for the upcoming 50th Anniversary exhibition. They did a tremendous job sorting through decades of history from our archives to create some superb display boards including press releases, interesting documents, and photographs. Bohdan, Olashaney, Sergio and Bailey, rolled up their sleeves and helped the site team with various handy jobs including, gardening, window cleaning and painting fences! A special mention to Bailey who impressed everyone by refitting one of the seats on the school minibus. Corin helped to support our Technology department and Dylan assisted the International Office.
We hope that this has given all our students a glimpse behind the scenes of working at a busy secondary school. Well done to all our Year 10s!
Donation of School Uniform
As we approach the end of the school year, we are reaching out to ask for your support in an important initiative. Many students outgrow their school uniforms before they wear out, and we would love to give those gently used items a new life by providing them to families in need.
If you have any items of school uniform that your child has outgrown, but are still in good condition, please consider donating them to our school. Your generous donations will help ensure that all students have access to the appropriate attire.
How You Can Help:
- What to Donate: Gently used school uniform in good condition (no tears, stains, or excessive wear).
- Where to Donate: Please drop off your items at School Office during school hours.
Thank you for your generosity and for helping us foster a supportive and inclusive school environment.
New 621 Bus
First Essex Buses are conducting a feasibility study for a proposed new service 621 from Roxwell to Ingatestone via Melbourne, Chignal Estates and Oxney Green (proposed timetable below). If this route is viable, they will need to register this service with the traffic commissioner and therefore need to know how many students are likely to use this service from September. If you would like to express an interest, please complete the microsoft form through this link: First Essex Bus 621. The deadline is 10th July. Well done to our fabulous Admissions Manager, Anne Smith, for lobbying so successfully for this additional provision.
We have been busy preparing for our big 50th Anniversary Celebration Event on 21st June. Our work experience students have been helping with displays and organising our very extensive and interesting historical artefacts. Please let us know if you would like to attend this event by emailing enquiries@aesessex.co.uk

LAMDA at Anglo
My name is Danielle Brown and I run the LAMDA at Anglo European School. I am an active Theatre Creative, Tutor and ex West End and Musical Theatre Performer. It is with great pleasure that I can announce the next year of LAMDA at Anglo, starting again September 2024.
What is LAMDA?
LAMDA stands for London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art. It is an examining body for speech and drama which works a little bit like music or dance grades, beginning at basic levels and moving up to Grade 8, with the higher grades also awarding UCAS points. Through performance and the creative platforms of drama, literature, public speaking and music, LAMDA encourages the development of life skills such as clear communication, command of the English language, self-confidence, physical presence, clarity of speech and a strong speaking voice. There is of course no pressure to take the exams, which we organise once a year. Even if a student just wishes to work
on material for personal development and fun then this is also hugely encouraged. Students can still massively benefit from skills learnt along the way.
At Anglo we offer the Acting branch of LAMDA. This is a dynamic syllabus with focus on script work and character development through voice and physicality. Session are run at school on;
- Thursday during the lunchtime hour (12:30-13:30) for Year 8 & 9
- Thursday after school (15:35-16:35) for Years 10-13 & more advanced grades
Whether a student is an aspiring performer or simply loves drama and being creative, LAMDA is an opportunity for all to improve self-expression, develop presentation and, arguably most importantly, have fun!
Places in the classes are limited so do reach out to avoid disappointment. Please get into contact via email if you would like to sign up or if you would like further information. I will be more
than happy to help. Please include full name and year group of the student (as of September ) in your email. Additionally, if the student has already taken a LAMDA Acting exam, please also include these details. lamdawithdanielle@hotmail.com
Hoping very much to have you on board for September!
Best wishes for now,
Danielle
