Classroom Chronicles
Drumming Guest in Music
Giff Howarth, a guest percussionist from Bloomsburg University, volunteered his time to present a drum demonstration to the 6th grade general music classes. He brought 25 drums into music class and taught students about different percussion instruments, created a drum circle and worked with students on different techniques.
Stream Field Trip
Recently in Mr. Catherman’s 7th grade science classes, they attended a field trip to different streams; Rapid run, Limestone River, Buffalo creek, to determine which location was the best stream to release the classroom raised trout. Each class was separated into different groups. Each group focused on different subjects: Chemical, bio, and physical. Data was collected by each team to determine the proper environment for the baby trout.
Egg Drop STEAM activity
In sixth grade science this November, Mr.Cicoria and his class have done an egg drop lab. In the experiment we made a construction to keep the egg safe out of connected pieces. We then made a parachute out of newspaper, garbage bags, etc. Students then colored/designed their eggs. Some students went as far as designing their eggs as humans, and others just colored their eggs. Once the kids were all done designing, they then got cups and stuffed the cups with cotton balls to help the egg not break. The students then went up on a ladder and dropped their egg. It was then their moment to see if their egg survived.
Rock Climbing
In 8th grade Physical Education the rock climbing wall is being put to good use. Students begin the unit by climbing the short horizontal wall in the hallway until they feel comfortable. They then can try the gymnasium wall which scales the entire height of the gym. All students are encouraged to try by our teachers Mr. Golfieri and Mrs. Geer. Students enjoy climbing as well as watching!l

Teacher Feature
Officer Shipman interview
This month's teacher feature actually features our school resource officer Mr. Shipman.
-What inspired you to become a Police officer?
Growing up I always admired my neighbor. We had a neighbor that was a state trooper. He parked outside our house and would always say hi and talk to me. And I was inspired by him.
-How did you get started as a police officer?
I joined the US Military and then became a corrections officer and then applied for the State Police and got accepted.
-How did you adopt your nickname “Shippy”
That became my nickname when I joined the state police, and instead of calling me by my last name Shipman, everybody shortened it to Shippy.
-What are some things you like to do outside of school?
I like to be outside camping, hunting, fishing or just hiking.I also like to listen to live music wherever I can.
-What kind of music do you like?
I like country and rock and roll.
-Do you have any pets?
Yes I have a Goldendoodle named Paisley.
-If you were stuck on a desert island tell us the three things you wanted to have with you, and what is the thing you would miss the most?
‘I would want a hat, sunscreen and water and I would miss BLT the most.
-Is it fun in middle school?
Yes, it is really fun
Bandfest & Stringfest
This year's String and Band festival was held in Shamokin on Thursday, Nov 21. Students practiced the whole day with a guest conductor and students from other school districts. Finally they presented a concert to the parents from 6:30-8:00pm. Festivals are a wonderful opportunity for students to experience music making in a different environment We are grateful to Mrs. Eischeid for taking students to this event.

RAPS Holiday Auction
DHEMS faculty, staff, student council, and the RAPS team have purchased prizes for our annual holiday auction. When students earn Dragon RAPS points for meeting our school-wide expectations, they receive a ticket that gives them a chance to win a prize or gift in our Annual Holiday Auction. RAPS is an acronym that stands for our school-wide expectations of being Respectful, Accountable, Prepared, and Safe. The afternoon before we leave for Winter Break, the winners of each of the prizes will be drawn and announced over DTV.
