During lunch recess today your child had a chance to create seed tape. This consists of wildflower bird & butterfly mix and can be planted now or when you are ready. The "glue" is a paste made from flour and water. Just place on top of loosened soil in a sunny spot and cover with enough soil so you can no longer see the paper towel. Keep watered until it starts to germinate and then water as needed. The paper towel will eventually break down into the soil. In 1 1/2-2 months you should start to see some flowers!

It is one of the students' favorite days of the year and you can be part of it. Field Day is a fun finale to the school year and we need volunteers. There is a morning session (2nd and 4th graders) and an afternoon session (1st and 3rd graders). We need 20 volunteers for each ~1.5 hr session. Mr. Chaney and other teachers have everything planned. Dear Maple Dale Families,

When was the last time you went back to someone and fixed the problem because it was your fault? This principle of “Righting a Wrong”is one of the most difficult for many people to incorporate into their lives. Disagreements and conflicts will always be part of our society, but it is the manner in which we deal with these situations afterward that can make the biggest difference. Learning to Right their Wrongs is a valuable lesson for children to realize that they can, in fact, make a difference in the world. When children learn to right wrongs and make amends for hurts that they have caused, they will see with their own eyes how their efforts can make a difference. They can experience the value of persistence and comprehend that small steps can lead them on a journey toward peace.

How do we encourage application of this principle?

• By stories- We will be reading stories about characters “Righting a Wrong”. This is an important theme in many children’s stories.

• By example- As adults and parents, we need to show how to “Right a Wrong” in our daily lives. Take the time to discuss that with your child and demonstrate how it’s challenging to do but worth it when it’s done. We have to model behavior that we want children to practice, or children may think that we are not sincere.

• By recognition- Maple Dale honors children and adults who “Right their Wrongs” in ALL areas of the building. Peace notes, Praise, and even open discussions!

• By reflection- Peace Walks and Right Wrong Slips™ help children think about their actions as well as give time to process how to “Right the Wrong” with classmates, teachers, and community members.

• By calmness- By keeping our cool, we help a child find a way to right the wrong.

How can you help at Home?

1. Praise your child for Righting Wrongs. Say things like, “That was being a good PeaceBuilder™. Learning to right wrongs is often very difficult for children. They need to know when they have done something well.

2. Point out times when adults Right Wrongs. Talk to your child about what was done to Right the Wrong. Children need adults to set good examples. They need help to understand how an adult’s actions righted the wrong.

3. When a wrong happens at home, ask your child to come up with five ways to Right the Wrong. For example, if your child takes a toy from another child, ask, “What are five ways to Right that Wrong?” This may seem more difficult than just telling the child what to do. But when children create their own solutions, they are more likely to remember them.

You are invited to Sycamore Community Schools first-ever K-12 STEAM Showcase on Saturday, May 12 from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. at E.H. Greene Intermediate.

The purpose of the event is to spotlight district-wide STEAM learning and local businesses and organizations that utilize STEAM (science, technology, engineering, art, math) in their work. The showcase will consist of live demonstrations, presentations, competitions, giveaways, and hands-on activities for all ages.

Some of the local organizations who will be participating include UC Blue Ash, Kroger Technology, Apple, Gorilla Maker, and the city of Blue Ash and Montgomery.

We are also excited to show off some of the work that is happening in our classrooms, including live demos of the AVES electric car, Blue Ash GeoCity, Montgomery PBL Carnival, and FIRST LEGO League. There will be opportunities for families to work with robotics, Makedo, and virtual reality. Come make a Mother’s Day present on our 3D printers!

Local food trucks will be serving food and refreshments from 11:00 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.

We anticipate a large turnout for this indoor/outdoor event. A free shuttle service from Maple Dale Elementary to E.H. Greene will run between 11:00 a.m. and 1:30 p.m.
