Elliott Eagles Update
Week of April 22nd
Greetings Elliott Families!
This year will be the first time a Legacy student will be recognized at Elliott Elementary. Students in 5th grade had the opportunity to apply as a Legacy student for Elliott based on their impact on their community and those around them. Up to two students will be selected and will have a photo board displayed in our school and be recognized within the district. This year we had four students submit applications. Those students were Belinda Santiago, Iden Akoto-Wiafe, Alexander Selix and Lilyan Terreault. The final two students will be acknowledged this week and have an opportunity to be recognized at a future board meeting.
We have several events taking place in the next several weeks as we get closer to the end of the school year. Please see those events located in our newsletter. More events will be added as we move into May. This week we will be having an Autism Acceptance Spirit Week and more details are below in our newsletter.

2nd Grade Classroom Activities
Second graders learned about the solar eclipse. We joined a zoom meeting with the Air and Space Museum and took our eclipse glasses outside to view the eclipse.
2nd grade takes a field trip to the Michigan Science Center. They did such a great job following our school PBIS expectations in a different setting!
3rd Grade Classroom Activities
3rd Graders have been busy!
We spent time during March celebrating Reading Month by tracking how many units we gained on Lexia each week, as well as welcoming in some guest readers!
During March we were also lucky enough to take a trip to the STEM Center at John Glenn High School! While we were there we got to visit the Planetarium and work on teams to build a parachute that would keep a Peep Marshmallow “alive” during a fall!
April is just beginning but already looking BRIGHT!! On Monday the 8th we celebrated the Solar Eclipse by making a Pinhole Projector, creating a 2D model of the Sun, Moon, and Earth, and completing an Oreo activity! Yum!
We have also spent time reading with our Kindergarten Reading Buddies!!

WWCSD K-12 Attendance Protocol
Regular attendance is crucial for your child's academic success. Please make every effort to ensure your child attends school on time every day and stays throughout the whole day. Consistent attendance throughout the school day allows your child to engage in learning and maximize their educational opportunities fully.
Illness: If your child is not feeling well and cannot attend school, please notify us immediately. Students who are ill should not attend school to prevent the spread of illness to others.
Excused Absences: We understand that there may be instances when your child needs to be absent due to illness, medical appointments, family emergencies, or other legitimate reasons. Please notify the school in advance whenever possible to classify the absence as excused.
Unexcused Absences: Unexcused absences negatively impact your child's education. Absences without valid reasons will be considered unexcused, and appropriate actions may be taken per district policy.
Timely reporting of absences helps us maintain accurate attendance records and ensures that your child's absence is properly documented. Absences must be reported within 24 hours.
There are two convenient methods for reporting your child's absence to facilitate efficient communication and accurate attendance records.
You can notify your child's school through the dedicated attendance line. Please leave a detailed message stating your child's name, grade, and reason for absence.
You can report absences directly through MiStar, our secure online portal for student information. MiStar provides a user-friendly interface that allows you to submit absences.
Thank you for your ongoing support in creating a positive and productive learning environment for all our students.

Wayne-Westland Community Schools K-12 Attendance Protocol
- One (1) absence and every absence thereafter - An automated call will be sent to indicate that the student has missed an attendance period. If a call was made to the school to excuse the absence, this call does not go out.
- Three (3) absences or equivalent - A teacher will make a phone call to discuss the reason(s) for the absences and seek to support the family in getting the child to school.
- Six (6) absences or equivalent - An attendance letter is sent to communicate the district’s concern about attendance and highlight the steps in the attendance protocol.
- Nine (9) absences or equivalent - A meeting will be set up between the family and an administrator or support staff member to discuss attendance barriers and to highlight the urgency of regular attendance.
- Twelve (12) absences or equivalent - Student’s name and address are submitted to Concentric to conduct a home visit. The school will notify parents of the upcoming visit. The details of that home visit are shared with the school to support the student’s regular attendance in school. The middle and high school students’ names and addresses will also be submitted to Westland Youth Assistance or Wayne Youth Services for enrollment in their programming. The second attendance letter is also mailed home at this time.
- Fifteen (15) absences or equivalent - Final attendance letter is sent home.
- Eighteen (18) absences or equivalent - Student is referred to Wayne County through formal petition for chronic absenteeism.
Food Service Update & Start of Snack Cart
Food Service uses a third party website to load funds onto students' accounts. The site is called PaySchools and information can be reached below, this money would stay on your students account from year to year, also from school to school in the district, and is available to spend at lunch on extra purchases such as snacks or an extra slice of pizza. The site does take 24-36 hours to upload money to a students account so be sure to do so a day or two prior to needing the funds. Please reach out to the Food Service Department with questions 734-419-2118 or foodservice@wwcsd.net
