We've All Done It

Admittedly, most of us can be accused of walking by someone in disregard. It's simple to write them off as someone needing a handout, and a large amount of people choose to ignore those who help. But, being homeless is a serious reality that affects many people.

End the stigma

We want to end the way the people think of homelessness, know as the stigma. We don’t want people to think that homeless people are dums, we want they to see them as a normal person trying to get back on the feet. When you are homeless it’s really hard to get back up and get into a home or afford what you need

Veterans are homeless too

Veterans are homeless too, not only citizens of the US are homelessness are veterans are homeless. These veterans are being forgotten and we need to appreciate them for fighting for are country

Children are born into homelessness

Children in are 20th century are born in poverty, and they don’t have a choice. It’s really hard to go to school

What Is It?

Social Stigma occurs due to unequal power, leaving an opportunity to stereotype, separate, and discriminate. Stigmatization happens when people feel threatened by another group. Society will label the homeless as no longer being "useful" or "functional" to society, since they do not actively help the "system" work.

Just Like You

How you ever felt invisible in a group. Did it feel good? Feeling left out or invisible is one of the worst feeling right? Why treat someone the way you wouldn’t like to be treat. When you walk by treat they with respect by just saying, “Good morning”, when you pass by, start a conversation, ask how they are doing. Many people experiencing homelessness say that the loss of dignity that accompanies the situation they are in is harder and harder than the loss of physical things.

Ways You Can Take Action

Has anyone every assumed that you are something that you aren’t? Have you ever been afraid to leave your house because of how you look? Have you ever treated a homeless person differently based on the fact that they are homeless? Why?

Many people like to think that homeless people aren’t smart or they did something that caused them to end up in their position. But that’s not true. One in twelve homeless people have college degrees, and more than half of homeless people were just one paycheck away from still having a home, but the paycheck just didn’t come in time.

You can help change this stigma around homelessness by getting more people to know that not everyone is the same and you can’t generalize homelessness as one thing if you have never experienced homelessness yourself.

What We Learned

Kennedy: “I learned what stigma means.”

Joaquin: “Homelessness isn’t something that you can tell right away.”

Julian: “Homelessness is a very big thing in our community and we need to change it.”

Hollie: “I learned that life is hard, no matter.”

Chandler: “I learned that you can’t trust everything you see.”

Agustin: “Just because people are in a certain situation, doesn’t mean they are in it for the same reason.”

Our names are Augustin, Chandler, Joaquin, Kennedy, Julian, and Holly. Our “Group Name” is Gotham Civilian Corps. We chose the Stigma of Homelessness because in the Community Issues Fair, True Worth Place inspired us. We’re going to 9th grade and fun fact... we semi-like each other.
