Tumuaki Update
Kia ora e te whānau,
It has been a great start to another term at Waikari School! With a nine-week term ahead, I know it will fly by quickly. With cross country and Matariki coming up, we are in for a treat. I know many of our whānau are getting back into the swing of winter sports, and I enjoy hearing all the students news on Monday mornings about what happened over the weekend (even if there weren't many ducks shot).
There has been a lot of news about education in the media recently, especially with the government’s announcement regarding the new parent portal. The timing was uncanny, as we discussed the importance of a cohesive whānau-staff-student relationship at our staff meeting last Wednesday morning. When we all work together, we can achieve great outcomes for our students. I encourage you to follow the link to the Parent Portal and explore the resources available to support your children at home to achieve their best outcomes.
It was wonderful to see music lessons starting up again on Friday! Students were in Room 1 having a fantastic time learning new instruments. A big thank you to Sally for her continued support.
Staff have been busy working on the Curriculum Refresh and how it will impact reporting this term. Thanks to those whānau who completed the survey to let us know the best time for a Whānau Information Session. This will be happening on Tuesday, June 10th, at 3:00 PM. I will send out the slides on Hero in case you miss it.
Make sure you read through the newsletter to see all that the students have been up to recently. As always, thank you for your support!
Noho ora mai,
Phoebe
Attendance - Every Day Matters
Recently we got our school attendance report from the MOE and sadly our attendance in Term 1 was a lot lower than past terms! We as a school are working really hard to ensure your children attend school regularly. It is really important for their success at school!
If your child won't be at school you NEED to contact the school office, otherwise they will be marked as truant. Below is an image of the Ministry of Education STAR approach we as a staff will be taking to ensure all students are attending school regularly.
Thank-You
Recently we have received a few amazing donations from our community and further afield.
Thank you to those who donated a chrome book, a keyboard and electric guitar. We really appreciate your kindness.
What's been happening at school
"Dress Like Caryn Day"
How many Caryn's can you spot? We had a great day celebrating the wonderful Caryn. She was in fits of laughter all day and very surprised by all the students outfits. Thanks to everyone for helping to make this a special celebration.
Bike Reward Day & Easter Egg Hunt
At the end of last term we had a Bike Reward day & Easter Egg Hunt to celebrate getting our Respect Jar full. Thanks heaps to the student leaders who organised all of the activities! I was very fun!
T-Ball & Softball
At the end of Term 1 our year 2-4's competed in the T-Ball Tournament and our year 5-6s competed in the Softball Tournament. We were all so proud of how our students joined forces with other schools to make a team. They showed great sportsmanship - sharing, taking turns, celebrating others success and making friends. It was a great day out!
Cycle & Scooter Safety with Constable Ken
Constable Ken came to school on Wednesday to teach us all about cycle and scooter safety: Things we learnt were:
Learning in our Classrooms
We have had a great start to Term 2 - with literacy and numeracy taking up the full morning of each day.
The Weka's wrote a letter to a crayon - which required a lot of creative thinking, and they did a fantastic job.
The Yr 4 - 8 children have started their music lessons with Sally.
Unfortunately the wet weather put a halt to our sessions with the Community Garden, but hopefully soon we will be harvesting potatoes.
We will also be starting our cross-country running practice this week.
ANZAC Writing - Room Weka
Here are two pieces of writing from Weka Room - they are great examples of 'Show - Don't Tell' that have used senses to make their writing come alive. Well done Rayan and Breanna.
The bright day I was in a trench. I looked up at the bright orange, red and yellow sky. I saw a flock of birds gliding to a burnt tree.
I was having a chat with my mate. He was called Jack. We were on the bunk bed listening to people shouting as we heard the last gun fired.
My team's clothes were wet and muddy because they did not get washed for months. I could smell sweat and mould. It was time. I finally went home to my family. Rayan
The day the soldiers went to war I marched onto the pitch black boat with sadness because I already missed my family. I saw a watery tear coming out of my mother's eye.
Suddenly the boat took off. i waved goodbye to my parents and siblings. Then it started to pour down with rain. I got soaked.
As I was sitting on the deck I saw seagulls flapping and squawking i heard the gum trees rustling in the noisy wind as we sailed past. i also heard waves constantly splashing the hull of the boat.
When I was steering the boat I smelt smoke coming from the engine as the coal was burnt to power the ship.
I felt a bit nervous because I had never been to war. Breanna
WANTED
Do you have any old shirts laying around at home? We need to restock our supply of old/used shirts/t-shirts for when we paint or work with clay. If you do have anything, please send them along to school and we will happily take them off your hands. Thank you.

Home Learning
Home Learning is essential to help support the learning your child is doing in the classroom. Please see the image below of the new one which is coming!
Kea Class Students
- Practice spelling words
- Complete the fortnightly maths challenge (can be done as a family).
- Read for 20min 5 times a week - when analysing students assessment we noticed that Kea Class students need to develop their reading milage. So the longer that they are able to read the more this is going to help them, which is why we ask that they read for home work!
- Practice your musical instrument.
Weka Class Students
- Practice spelling words
- Complete the fortnightly maths challenge (can be done as a family).
- Read for 10min 5 times a week.
Fortnightly Maths Challenge
A Quick Reminder
Are you tired of asking your children, "How was your day?" and getting the same reply every time. How about you try asking one of the questions below and see if the response is different?

From the Office (Weekly Reminders)
School Accounts - Available on HERO now.
Printed statements went home last week for the start of year stationery. Some students in the junior class didn't quite need any new stationery at this stage as they had plenty of space left in their books from last year. They will have stationery added to their account throughout the year as needed. This applies to all students during the year as different costs are added e.g. trips, camps and stationery costs etc.
This information can be seen easily accessed at any time in your parent view on the HERO app. Be sure to hop on to the HERO app if you haven't already done so.
