MS 50 Updates: Week of October 7, 2024
ELT Clubs begin this Wednesday! You should have received an Operoo form this afternoon with your student's ELT assignments. If you need help accessing this form on Operoo, please complete the form at ms50.org/operoo and we will reset your password. You can also find your student's courses on the schedule in their NYC Schools Account.
If your student did not register for any courses yet or they have a day listed as "none" and you would like them to have an ELT, please review the course list at ms50.org/elt to see which courses still have availability. Your student can then go to Ms. Gunn or Mr. Warren's offices after school on Wednesday, October 9th during the first ELT time to add any classes from the available list.

PTA and SLT this Week!
Our October PTA meeting is THURSDAY and we would love to have more members join! All parents are members and are invited to attend. In addition, our fundraising and space planning committees are always looking for more members if you would like to get involved. These groups meet online monthly and as needed. We are also looking for more parents to be members of the School Leadership Team (SLT). The SLT meets monthly online at 4PM on the day of the PTA meeting. Please email Edda Figueroa, our Parent Coordinator, for more information and to sign up for these opportunities. We hope to see you this Thursday!
Middle and High School Applications
School application season is here! 8th graders are taking time during advisory each week to research what school options will be right for them next year with guided lessons on how to navigate the website and prepare their applications. 8th grade families should have received a letter with their MySchools account creation code last week. If you have not received it yet, please contact Ms. Sostre.
Do you know any 5th grade families looking for a middle school next year? Our school tour dates and registration information can be found at ms50.org/admissions. You can also share our new virtual tour video with them at the YouTube link below!
Classroom Spotlight: Social Studies
6th Grade: Neolithic Revolution
In this unit, students study the shift from Paleolithic to Neolithic times and ask themselves if the invention of farming was a good development. They start by learning about the lives of nomadic hunter gatherers, then study the positive and negative effects from the development of agriculture. During this unit, students learn that a stable food supply is an essential characteristic of a permanent community, which is an essential understanding for Unit 3 afterwards. This unit concludes with a debate about the merits vs. harms of the Neolithic Revolution as a turning point in human advancement.
7th Grade: Exploration and Early Encounters
This unit centers around the following essential question: How did issues of power, wealth, and morality influence exploration and colonization? Throughout the unit, students will analyze and explore a range of primary source documents to explore the following questions;
• What were the characteristics of indigenous cultures prior to European exploration?
• What factors contributed to European exploration?
• How have different cultures experienced European exploration and settlement?
• What role did Africans play in the development of the American colonies and New York specifically?
• How did political, economic, and social factors affect the development of the colonial regions?
8th Grade: Slavery, the Civil War, and Reconstruction
In 8th Grade, our students are finishing Unit 1 which covered US slavery, the Civil War and events which led to it, and the Reconstruction era and the various attempts to reunite the nation and ensure rights for formerly enslaved people. Next week, students will begin working on their Unit 1 Assessment which asks them to take the knowledge they have learned to answer the question, "are Black Americans owed reparations due to the history of slavery and racism?" Students use Ta-Nehisi Coates' "The Case for Reparations" as a guiding text and make connections between the unit and his writing to make their arguments.
