A Note From Our Dean of Educational Philosophy
What is the difference between pleasing your child, and building joy in your child, and why is that important to recognize? Here are some questions you can ask yourself to try and discern the difference between the two.
- If a child is always pleased, how do they learn to handle disappointment?
- What values are being taught when joy is cultivated through challenge or effort?
- Could pleasing children too often affect their intrinsic motivation? In what ways?
- What do children learn when we prioritize pleasing them in the moment?
- How might building joy shape a child’s character differently than simply keeping them content?
- Which approach do you think fosters resilience more effectively: joy-building or constant pleasing?
Children need to be able to joyfully and respectfully accept the answer, “no.” Otherwise, they can become enslaved to their own desires and whims. As TCA and parents partner together to create exemplary citizens, let us strive towards building joy and cultivating character and not giving in to temporal pleasing.
William Wordsworth noted the heavy consequence of giving in to what seems enjoyable in the moment; “Me this uncharted freedom tires; I feel the weight of chance desires.”
Enjoy building true joy with your children during these last 5 weeks of school!
