A few words from Mr. Jelks...
Dear LIS Families,
I hope this message finds you well. With a few consistent days of sunshine finally, I wanted to take a moment to share some highlights from our school community. Our students continue to impress, not only academically but also in extracurricular activities. A special shout-out goes to our boys' and girls' basketball teams, along with their dedicated coaches, for their outstanding performances in the playoffs. While both teams demonstrated skill and sportsmanship, our girls' team narrowly missed clinching the championship, a testament to their hard work and determination.
As we celebrate these achievements, I also want to encourage you to take a few minutes to have a conversation with your children about internet safety and responsible use of social media. Ensuring their online experiences are positive and secure is crucial, and your guidance in this matter is invaluable. Thank you for your continued support in fostering a safe and nurturing environment for our students.
Don't forget to bring a toonie on Friday April 26th to purchase one hotdog. Sells will take place at the concession stand during long recess.

Staff vs Student Basketball game
In a recent students vs. staff basketball game, the outcome was not favourable for the students, yet the teachers emerged without any injuries, and the students beamed with smiles. Ultimately, the safety and joy experienced by both sides prevailed, highlighting the true spirit of friendly competition. Looking ahead, the students are gearing up to level the playing field in June with a tag football match against the staff.

EARTH DAY AT PARK AVE FARM
Leadership Vancouver Island (LVI), in partnership with Nanaimo Foodshare Society and the City of Nanaimo, invites the community to join in the festivities of Earth Day at Park Avenue Farm on Saturday, April 20, 2024 from 10am until 2pm. This family-friendly event promises a day of fun, education, and community connection, all centered around the theme of sustainability and local agriculture.
The Food for Thought Team, a part of LVI, recognizes the challenges families face in accessing nutritious food. By partnering with the Nanaimo Foodshare Society, they aim to raise awareness of food programs and initiatives while highlighting the opportunities for hands-on learning and ecological stewardship at Park Avenue Farm (945 Park Avenue, Nanaimo).

Attendance
We ask parents/guardians to call the school before 9:00 am at (250) 245-3351 or email Info.LI@sd68.bc.ca to notify the school of your child’s absence. Please follow up with a note to your child’s teacher when your child returns to school so the teacher can address any missed work, homework issues, etc. Also a reminder that if students need to leave early, they should be signed out in the main office.
School Closure
The following is a reminder about the NLPS school closure procedure for students.
If schools are closed due to snow, or any other weather-related problems, announcements will be made on local radio stations (WOLF 106.9 FM, WAVE 102.3 FM, and 91.7 COAST FM) by 7 a.m., or earlier, on the day of the closure. Please do not call the radio station – tune in and listen for the announcements, which will be made on a regular basis.
In addition, the district will post the information on the district’s website, Twitter, Facebook, and mobile app. Families may also receive a message through the School Messenger notification system via phone, email, or text. Please keep in mind, however, that there may be situations where this is not always possible, for example, power outages or technical problems. The most reliable method is to listen to the local radio stations.
