Rāmere Friday 25th March Poutū-te-rangi 2022 (T1: Wk8/11)
Our Tumuaki / Principal
COVID Rollercoaster Ride: The COVID rollercoaster continues for the school, with children and staff being impacted and isolating.
We really appreciate the notification of cases as it helps us to track what's happening in the school and we are also required to notify the Ministry of Education so they can see what stress the education system is under.
Each day I have been posting on Facebook our attendance rates so that you can see the statistics around staff and class attendance that we are managing. Please be prepared if we need to close due to increased staff sickness. We are very grateful for our relief staff which is enabling us to get through at present but know it would only take two or three teachers to go down at the same time and things would get very tight.
Updates of the Traffic Light Setting: On Wednesday 23rd March the Prime Minister announced a number of changes that will impact our school.
- Red: We are still in the Red phase and so the advice is to still limit entry to school and so our drop off and pick up zones will remain whilst at Red.
- Celebration Time: We will begin as a school to gather together again for our Friday afternoon Celebration Times, doing this in a socially distanced way between teams. Our first one back together, for the children only, will be Friday 1st April.
- Scanning In: QR codes are no longer required to be scanned from Tuesday 5th April but we still require all parents, as usual in relation to emergency procedures, to sign in at the office so that we know who is on-site.
- Vaccine Passes: For school trips, events and school sports where parents are functioning as a volunteer support for the school, from Tuesday 5th of April, we no longer require evidence of a vaccine pass but will still require evidence of a clear police vet.
- Staggered Playtimes: From Monday 28th March we will move to restore our whole school break times after having staggered playtime for a number of weeks.
Principal's Challenge: For those children and parents isolating, there could be time to take on the Principal's Challenge. There are still a couple of weeks left and it could be a good way of extending your artistic talents.
Thank You - Team Edendale
- Caci Mineur: We love having Caci with us and watching her grow more and more in her skill and contributions to our school. She is committed to the children and her class and makes a great team member with a positive, flexible, contributing attitude. Thanks for being part of Team Edendale, Caci!

Our Team for this Week - Team Pukeko
Our year has started well in Team Pukeko, despite the disruptions of Covid isolations, and we welcomed Hoani last week to bring us to a total of 24 Year Two and Three students.
We feel very lucky in Team Pukeko to have a super team of amazing helpers to support us with our learning: Mrs Jane Muir is our release teacher for the days when Mrs Coyle is out of the classroom, and we have Mrs Liz Scott and Ms Tracey Lockhart supporting us as our fantastic, versatile Teacher Aides each morning.
We also enjoy having Mrs Belinda Knapp, a third-year trainee teacher from the University of Otago’s Southland Campus, working with us each Monday. Mrs Knapp spent the first three weeks of term with us, and will also have extended postings with us in Terms Two and Three, while she completes her training for a Bachelor of Education.
This term we have been getting to know the classroom routines and everyone is doing a super job of showing our school values. We are a great little team who enjoy each others’ company and we love learning new things!
We are still talking about our visit to the Kamahi Reserve, where we were thrilled to see a pipipi (brown creeper) flying around with the fantails.
Our Market Day DRIVE inquiry was very successful - we made and sold different types of bird feeders to help the birds out during the winter and encourage them into our gardens.
Our current DRIVE inquiry will see us learning about life in the Phillippines as we compare a variety of aspects with our lives here in New Zealand. Mrs Lordgie Batir, the Community of Learning’s Immigrant Support Worker, will be helping us with this.
For maths, many of us are learning to use the PR1ME Math books and we have been learning about telling number stories with number bonds and addition sentences for facts to ten. We have been doing a lot of work with place value, and our more advanced maths group has started working with money. With Mrs Muir we have all been learning about telling the time.
Our writing and reading skills are coming along beautifully - we love the challenges Mrs Coyle gives us for our writing (to include certain describing words, use different sentence starters, or to show strong use of our phonics and spelling skills). One of the highlights of our day is to learn new spelling words and patterns during our Word Lab lessons, and we are always excited to show that we have remembered our spelling words during our fortnightly checks!
All of us have been showing fantastic progress with our REAP swimming survival skills lessons in the past two weeks - such important things to know in a country with so many water features in our environment.
The next three weeks will be busy, busy, busy, but that is how we like it!
Nga mihi,
Mrs Jenny Coyle and Team Pukeko
Character Values Positive Behaviour for Learning (PB4L): Term One Respect Manaakitanga

At Edendale Primary School respect is demonstrated when we..
- Use our manners and talk politely to each other.

Principal's Values Award

Most Valuable Pupil: Team Tui
Emma Penney
“Respect is how you treat everyone”.
Emma is a young lady who lives by this quote. No matter who you are Emma is polite and well mannered, and she demonstrates our school value of Manaakitanga - Respect.
Every morning, Emma walks in with a big smile on her face and gives a softly spoken greeting before completing her morning tasks.
Emma is always respectful during learning times by actively listening and following instructions, both in and outside the classroom. Emma strives for excellence by completing her work to the best of her ability and always having a can-do attitude when it comes to her learning.
Emma is quick to help me out with any jobs that need to be done around the classroom and she is a good role model of how to work with others for a pair or group activity.
Thank you, Emma, for being so reliable, hard-working and someone I can trust in Team Tui. You set a positive happy attitude in our room and you are a great example for all of what respect looks like.
Ka pai!
Most Valuable Pupil: Team Kea
Rose van de Laak
Rose is Team Kea’s MVP this week for showing our school value of Manaakitanga - Respect.
Rose is a lovely young lady who consistently shows many of our school values. She walks into school with a smile and greets her friends and teachers by saying “Good morning”. She knows our classroom routines well and gets herself organised and ready for learning.
Rose is kind and caring towards anyone around her and is a valued member of our class. She has been a super friend and helper to the children who are new to the school this year.
Rose has a positive attitude towards school. She gives everything a go and makes sure she completes tasks to a high standard. Rose tries her best and has already made great progress with her learning.
Rose has excellent manners and treats others how she would like to be treated. She often gives out compliments to others and she is a delight to be around.
We are very lucky to have a fantastic role model, learner and friend like you in Team Kea, Rose. I look forward to seeing all your future achievements as I know you have a bright future ahead of you.
Goed gedaan, well done Rose!

T-Rex told a fib!
He said “I don’t like meat.”
He was hungry so he ate a big dinosaur.
The dinosaur was trembling because he was scared!
T-Rex said “That was good.”
