Families,

We have had a wonderful week! It has been so great getting to know the students and helping them adjust to Woodview; along with learning our classroom routines. We have a very respectful, kind, hard working, group of third graders!

Homework: Students will have daily math homework besides Fridays. It will be one page, double sided. Our goal is that the students do not spend more than 15-20 minutes on the homework. If your student is consistently spending more time on the math, please let me know. We also ask that the students try and read each night. We do not have a recording sheet.

Orange Folders: Please help remind your student to bring their orange folder back and forth to school and home each day. This helps build their responsibility and also keeps a safe place for homework, daily work, and notes from school/home.

Water Bottles/Snack: We recommend that the students bring a water bottle to school each day. Students have a time in the afternoon where they can have a healthy snack. Occasionally, there are leftover school breakfast items that they can choose from. Students are also able to bring a small snack from home or eat an item leftover from their cold lunch.

Classroom Newsletters: From now on, newsletters will be emailed to families at least every two weeks. Please let me know if you would rather have a hard copy sent home.

Caring Schools: Woodview's Social Emotional Learning (SEL) program is called Caring Schools. Over the next 2 months, students will be given a family sheet each Friday. We want to encourage families to work together over the weekend to complete the sheet. Students are also coming home with a Spotlight Student form to complete. Throughout the year, students will be chosen as our Spotlight Student for the week. Families will be notified so that students can bring in photos of themselves to share when they are chosen!

9/11 Half Day Students

Students have been working to understand multiplication as ‘equal groups of.’ We have been relating multiplication to the array model. Next week, students will be working with skip counting and tape diagrams as additional strategies.

We will begin studying personal narrative texts. Our readings will help us answer the essential question: How do people from different cultures help contribute to a community? Students will work with a variety of different texts that relate to the same genre. Students will read a variety of texts relating to the topic of sharing different cultures. Students will also be practicing their close reading skills with both fiction and non-fiction texts. For grammar, we will be working on determining the difference between a statement and a question. For spelling, we will be working with short a and short i sounds.

Our first science unit is, Weather and Climate. In this unit, students will learn to make predictions about the weather through observing clouds and wind. Students will learn to differentiate between weather and climate and use models to determine global climate patterns. This week, students trapped warm water in a cup and observed the results. We were able to make, "a cloud" in our cups!

This week, students are reviewing telling time, counting money, addition, and place value.
