Southern Colonies
Founders
Many of the southern colonies were founded using the proprietary system. The King would delegate certain trusted nobles to govern the colonies. However, typically the crown reclaimed control of colonies that made a lot of money or that had internal conflicts (such as the split of North Carolina and South Carolina). Other important people to know include James Oglethorpe, who helped found Georgia and Lord Baltimore, who helped found Maryland.

Economy
Most of the southern colonies had agrarian economies. Virginia and Maryland made a majority of their income with tobacco. Pine trees and naval stores were integral to North Carolina's economy. Other crops such as indigo were also cash crops. Agriculture and economics are the main reason many of the southern colonies were formed (apart from Maryland, which was created as a refuge for Catholics). The King wanted to take advantage of the natural resources found in America and thought colonizing was one of the best ways.
