From the Desk of Your Principal
Dear Highlander Families,
We made it...through the first half of the year anyway. The first day of winter and shortest day of the year is tomorrow.
I know finals week may have been stressful for many. It was also very respectful and focused. It serves as great preparation for what the college/university environment will be like.
Please find some time in these next few weeks to regroup, reenergize, and do something joyful. We will jump into 2025 with the road to graduation for our seniors and course selection for our remaining students. We have many exciting events in store just around the corner.
Note: The next parent newsletter will come out on January 10.
Warmly,
Dr. Yoshihara

Counseling Corner
Hello Everyone! As we start off the new semester, there are many things to think about and be ready for.
Seniors
- Mid year reports- Typically colleges on the Common Application ask for semester 1 grades. These will be ready by 1/14. So, unless you tell us otherwise, we will be sending in your semester 1 grades for any Common Application College at that time.
- If there is a college/ university not on the Common App ( does not include UC or CSU), please let us know if a college needs a mid year report.
- Early Decision- If you were able to be admitted to a college under Early Decision- Congratulations!!! This is a reminder that you need to withdraw your other college applications. This is noted in the Early Decision agreement and you are also keeping an admission spot for another student.
- Please see your counselor if you have any questions.
- Deferred or have not heard from your college yet or need support for an application decision? Please come by the counseling office for any support or help. AND Let's all support each other as you wait to hear from colleges. Many students will have to wait to hear about college decisions until March, and some students might be disappointed in decisions.
- No matter what happens, we should be uplifting and supporting one another through this process!
- Dropping a class- We encourage you to not drop a class at this time. Your applications are determined partly by your senior classes.
Juniors
- Set up meetings with C&CC! - If you haven’t already done so, please sign up to meet with Ms. M-L to discuss your plans for post graduation.
All students
- Course changes-Please use the QR code for any course changes to help us facilitate this process. And please go to your classes in your schedule until you hear from your counselor about any course changes.
- TAs- There is a TA form you need to have a teacher sign (outside on the bulletin board of the counseling office) in order to have a TA class in your schedule.
Course selection- Important dates
The time has come for us to look to the school year 2025-2026 and request our classes. You should utilize the resources under the “Course Selection process” in the counseling / PHS website (AP/Honors Course expectations, time management worksheet). Please be aware of these important dates:
1/9- Incoming 9th grade presentation- 6:30 Alan Harvey Theater
1/10- PMS course selection presentation to current 8th graders at PMS
1/23- Current 9th grade course request presentation- Time and place TBD

The Center offers free, confidential, on-campus counseling and refers students and families to vital community resources. The Wellness Center provides a safe, non-judgmental environment where students are encouraged to take responsibility for their physical, emotional, mental and social well-being.
The Wellness Center is funded in part by the Piedmont Unified School District, along with direct community donations, the Wellness Center Support Committee and PEF. All proceeds help to fund the PUSD Wellness Center, which serves Piedmont High School, Millennium High School, and Piedmont Middle School students.
Currently, there are several ways to donate to the Wellness Center.

Piedmont's MLK Day Student Art & Poetry Creations
What & When: Piedmont Anti-Racism and Diversity Committee (PADC) and the City of Piedmont will be hosting the 28th annual Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Celebration at the Alan Harvey Theater on Monday, January 20th, and would like to invite all K-12 students to submit personal art or writing inspired by the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. to contribute to this special event! Check out this video to see some of last year’s amazing work! All participants will be entered into a drawing to win one of 10 gift cards to Mulberry’s. The deadline is Monday, January 13.
Creative Prompt: The theme of this year’s celebration is “Separate is Never Equal: What Unites Us?” Students are asked to create a piece of art or writing in response to Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.’s quote:
In a speech in March 1966, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. called on people to never feel comfortable with any form of segregation, tyranny, or supremacy.
“I never intend to adjust myself to segregation and discrimination. I never intend to become adjusted to religious bigotry. I never intend to adjust myself to economic conditions that will take necessities from the many to give luxuries to the few.”
What does this message mean to you?
Submission Details: Art should be made on 8.5. X 11 paper; writing should be limited to one page. It can be dropped off at the front office of your school or uploaded to PADC’s website. Please include your name somewhere on your work. If you are dropping it off, please fill out and attach this form.
Questions? Please reach out to Ellen Lee at hiellenlee@gmail.com.
Staying Safe This Holiday
With the holidays upon us and folks gathering indoors, we’d like to remind you of some of the important ways we can all work together to keep our community healthy this winter. Not only have we entered cold and flu season, but RSV (Respiratory Syncytial Virus), pertussis (whooping cough), walking pneumonia (Mycoplasma pneumoniae), and of course, COVID-19, have all been circulating in the community as well. It is therefore important to be mindful when gathering with friends and family this season to prevent the spread of illness.

Career Day is Coming (2/28/25)
Mark your calendars! Our annual Career Day is set for Friday, February 28, 2025, and we need your help to make it a success.
We're looking for parents, alumni, and community members who are willing to spend a morning sharing their work experiences with our high school students as a presenter. Whether you're in tech, healthcare, the trades, arts, business, or any other field – if you're passionate about what you do, consider sharing that passion with curious students!
What does it mean to be a presenter at Career Day?
- The overall time commitment is approximately 1-2 hours of preparation in advance, and then 2 hours on the day of the event (Friday, Feb 28)
- On the day of the event, after a brief orientation, presenters will give two back-to-back 25-minute presentations to two separate groups of students during the Academy period (approximately 10:15 - 11:15).
- Presentations typically include information about the presenter's education/training, high level overview of their career path, what a typical day includes, and opportunity for student Q&A.
- Presenters will be provided with guidance and tools to create their presentations.
Interested in participating? Please complete our brief Google Form no later than January 10, 2025.
As we aim to represent a wide range of careers and industries, we may not be able to accommodate all volunteers this year. However, we deeply appreciate every response and will confirm speaking opportunities with selected presenters.
You'll hear much more about plans, including some new activities related to Career Day in the coming weeks.
Thank you for helping our students explore their future possibilities!
Giving Campaign Help Needed...again
We continue to work hard at getting our families to support our schools. We still have a goal of 75% participation and now we'd like to focus in on our individual grade levels. We would like to offer an age-appropriate event (candy party, pizza party, etc) to any (and all) grade that beats last year's participation percentage.
This is where each grade was last year:
9th: 59%
10th: 58%
11th: 48%
12th: 48%
We'd still love to get to 75%, but beating last year's percentage is a great incremental goal!

Senior LaunchPad Program
📢 Attention Parents and Guardians of Seniors!
As the senior year reaches its midpoint, excitement builds for what lies ahead, but it can also bring some anxiety as students prepare for their next chapter. Senior Launchpad is here to help, equipping students with practical life skills to confidently transition to college and beyond. The sessions offered cover socio-emotional, financial, and physical transitions and their challenges.
While this event took place on December 9th, it was recorded. You may view the info session below.
Highlander of the Week
This week's student is Tsukasa Sano. We start off by having staff share some thoughts on Tsukasa.
What quality(ies) best describes this student? Tsukasa is insightful and considerate.
How long have you known the student? I have known Tsukasa since the beginning of this year.
What is the most memorable event you have of this student? Tsukasa consistently supports his peers by clarifying concepts. He is always eager to help others and discuss ideas with his table group. He recently led his group in presenting a math problem to the class.
How does this student Achieve the Honorable? Tsukasa works hard, asks questions, looks out for his peers, and always contributes positively to the learning environment.
If there was one word to describe this student, what would it be? Conscientious.
And from Tsukasa himself:
- So far this year, what has been your most memorable experience? I have a couple of memorable experiences this year, but one that stands out is when I performed at a rehearsal for the first time as a PHS jazz band member, during the harvest festival. It was and still is so cool to be able to play music while being surrounded by incredibly talented people.
- If you were to describe PHS to someone who is thinking about coming, what would you say to them? PHS is a smaller school than most, which means that you feel a great sense of community and inclusion within the school. We're all together- like a big family.
- If you were in charge at PHS, what is one action you might take to make it better? I would maybe add more AP and Honors classes, but I would also strive for and maintain good pay for teachers so they can continue to do their job.
- If you could share one sentence with your parents/guardians, what would you say? I am and will forever be grateful for all the opportunities you've made possible for me. Thank you so much for your hard work!
- What is your favorite word? My favorite word is cube (if you know, you know).
- What is your favorite song? My favorite song changes often, but right now it's probably 'Dean Town' by Vulfpeck.
- What is your favorite food? I have no single favorite food, but I'm feeling like eating curry today.
- Can you share a photo of something from your summer and why it is special to you? This photo is from this summer when I visited the Yokoyama Observation Deck in Japan. This particular area of Japan was overwhelmingly my most favorite place out of all the places I visited this summer, and this is the photo that sticks out to me the most when I look back at the photo album.
Thanks & Appreciations
- A shout out to all the Parent Clubs, PEF, and PPN for the underwriting of the Counted Out screening this past Tuesday evening. We had a decent turnout and a wonderful dialogue with the producer aftwards.
- A special "thank you" to Nairobi for always stepping up--this time for her willingness to help in the facilitation of speakers in the Counted Out event. Glad we have you for many more years!
Highlander Trivia
Thanks to all those that participated in the Highlander Trivia question last week. We had a surprising amount of responses, wide range of answers, but a group of people got the exact answer. I guess there must be a way to connect to the playlist?
The question last week was: As you know, the principal likes to play music in the mornings. It is based off a playlist. How many songs are on that playlist?
The correct answer is 164. Congratulations to Noah S. who was the first person to get the correct answer. Also, as a winner for two weeks in a row, that is also a first! Noah S., please come by the main office and claim your prize.
