Increases in Stomach bug and Flu like Illnesses
When to Keep your Child Home
February 4, 2025
Dear Parents/Guardians,
We are seeing an increase in stomach bug, flu, and colds in our schools. In order to keep your child healthy two of the greatest defenses against illness are hand washing and isolation. Please keep your child home if he/she has any of the following symptoms:
- Temperature of 100 or higher within the last 24 hours (not treated with Tylenol or Motrin)
- Nausea that is not related to motion sickness, lasts for more than one hour and/or prevents your child from eating
- Vomiting or diarrhea (must be symptom-free for 24 hours before returning to school)
- Coughing that is painful, keeps your child awake at night and is uncontrolled
- Congestion that is so severe your child is having difficulty walking up stairs without getting short of breath and/or cannot talk easily
- A sore throat that has lasted for more than 24 hours and is preventing your child from eating/drinking--even more of a concern when there has been a known exposure to strep throat
- Dizziness with or without a headache
If you are unsure about whether or not your child's symptoms are serious enough to keep him/her home, please feel free to call the health office at your child’s school. We can review the symptoms over the phone. It is preferred to arrive late than to arrive on time with contagious symptoms.
We greatly appreciate your help!
Sincerely,
