The End of Another School Year
As final exams wrapped up today, you could feel the energy and excitement from the students and staff, as they headed out to officially begin summer vacation. It's been a busy couple of weeks here at MHS, as we graduated the Class of 2024, celebrated the accomplishments of our underclassmen at our annual awards ceremony, and navigated through the past four days of final exams. As our graduates head off on their next adventures, our undergraduates prepare to move up to the become sophomores, juniors and seniors, and our 8th graders are getting ready to join MHS as the Class of 2028!
We hope you are able to slow down a bit this summer to enjoy time with friends and family, and savor all the moments you have together. As a school, we've created many great memories this year and have done our best to share them with you in this newsletter. When we return in the fall, we'll be excited to hear all the stories from your summer adventures as we begin the 2024-25 school year on August 28.
For those of you with a rising 9th grader, be on the lookout for a letter this summer with information on freshman orientation, which will take place on August 22. Thank you to our staff, students, families, and community supporters for making the 2023-24 school year one to remember. Have a safe and prosperous summer (and of course, don't forget your summer reading)!
Final Report Cards
Final report cards for 2023-2024 will available in the PowerSchool parent/student portal early next week. A message will be sent out to parents/guardians when they are available to view.
Summer Reading
Over the course of the past month, students entering grades 9-12 were asked to choose one book out of a group of nearly 30 staff selected works, and registered for their choice. Some books will have Google Classrooms created or other forms of communication for potential projects, assignments, resources, or opportunities this summer. When we return in the fall, on Wednesday, September 4, students will report to a classroom for their particular book. There, students will meet the teacher who read that book and will participate in—among other possibilities—a discussion and/or exam on the book. The grade on that assessment will be entered as a test grade in the student’s English class.
Students must obtain their own copy of the book and are encouraged to take ample notes. Books may be brought into school on Summer Reading Day, but it’s up to the teacher’s discretion whether or not to allow books or notes to be used during the assessment.
Summer School Credit Recovery Information 2024
Failure of a course in the 55-59% range during the academic year may be made up with a grade of 70 or better in a (30) hour night or summer course during the summer immediately following failure.
Summer courses must be approved by Mark Awdycki, Principal, prior to registration if credit is to be granted. Parents and students are responsible for finding suitable course offerings and all costs relating to summer school. To request approval, please complete the MHS 2024 Summer School Approval Form.
There are three options for summer school:
This year, Millis High School has partnered with Educere as one option for your student to take summer school courses. Millis Teachers Honored at Norfolk County Teachers Association Banquet
On Tuesday, June 4th the Millis Teachers Association honored two of their own at the annual Norfolk County Teachers Association Banquet. This year the Millis Teachers Association was proud to present the Honor Award to Yvonne FitzGerald and the Service Award to Beth Morrill. In addition, Mrs. Fitzgerald received the NCTA Teacher of the Year Distinguished Educator Award, an honor never before given to a Millis educator. Here is what was read at the ceremony:
Yvonne encompasses what it means to go above and beyond to be a great educator. Aside from coaching over 100 students on the track and field team, she advises our DECA program and Culture Club. Her generous heart goes beyond her creativity and enthusiasm in the classroom and on the athletic fields. Twice she has fostered existing students so they could finish out their schooling in Millis. She’s served our local Association as vice-president, NCTA director, negotiations participant, and many years as a delegate to Annual Meeting.
Beth started the Active Minds Club with over 38% of our high school student body participating. Active Minds destigmatizes mental health while building peer-to-peer connections. In addition, Beth’s homework clinic is also a place of support for students. Her being a great listener and developing relationships with our students has enabled them to have a trusted adult to depend on. Beth’s caring disposition is reflected in all that she does to help our students, school, and community.
Junior Breakfast
Earlier this morning, our rising seniors received their senior jerseys and were treated to a celebratory breakfast in the cafeteria. Thank you to Mr. Fallon and the food services team for cooking up a breakfast feast for the Class of 2025!
Senior Events - Thank you Mr. Carter, Mr. Bigelow and Mrs. Bedard
Mr. Carter and Mr. Bigelow organized this year's senior week events, including a beach day, a banquet and a day out in Boston. They had fun riding bikes around Boston in the process. Many thanks to Mr Carter and Mr Bigelow for organizing such fun activities!
Mrs. Bedard also deserves our gratitude for all of her hard work in setting up the school's graduation ceremony and class day.
Senior Rolling Rally and Bonfire
Last Friday night was the Senior Rolling Rally around Millis, which was followed by a massive bonfire built back at MHS built by the Millis Fire Dept. Thank you to everyone who helped make this such a special night for our seniors! A big shout out to the Millis Police Department and Millis Fire Department who put in an incredible amount of effort to make this new tradition such an incredible experience for our school and town.
Class Day for the Class of 2024
On Wednesday afternoon, June 5, we hosted our annual Class Day, this year for the Class of 2024. This intimate, informal ceremony allows our faculty and staff to recognize the achievements of our seniors over the years. Teachers awarded certificates to students and students presented tribute chairs to four members of our staff who have impacted their lives in some way.
A link to the full video of Class Day can be found below.
Class of 2024 Graduation
With family, friends, staff, community members, and the Millis High School Class of 1974 in attendance, Thursday evening was an incredible celebration as we graduated the MHS Class of 2024. We wish them well in all their future endeavors as they head out on their next adventure as alumni of Millis High School!
Celebrating their 50th graduation from Millis High School, we were proud to welcome back members of the graduating Class of 1974 to our graduation ceremony last night. It was wonderful to have our alumni back home to celebrate our 121st Commencement Exercises. Thank you to those members of the Class of '74 in attendance. We hope you enjoy your class reunion in the fall!

The Senior Project Presentations were filmed and videos can now be viewed on Youtube.
Senior School Emails - Disabled After Graduation
Senior school emails will be disabled during the summer. Seniors will need to create a personal email account and transfer whatever info they want (including changing over any newsletters & notifications you wish to keep) to that new email address. This is fairly simple if it is a Gmail account. To create a new account, click here: https://takeout.google.com/transfer. This is useful if you don’t want to co-mingle school stuff with another personal account. For basic Google account stuff you may need you can click here: https://myaccount.google.com/. If more help is needed you can click here for support: https://support.google.com/mail/answer/21289. Please do this soon as there will not be a reminder before emails are disabled.
2024-2025 Bus Registration is now open!
Families can now register for the school bus for SY24-25. Click here to register.
Signup deadline is Friday, June 14, 2024 at 4:00 pm

ATTENDANCE POLICIES
.........................................................................
Tardies
If your student is going to be late to school, a parent/guardian must contact the office, by or before 8AM. The office can be reached one of the following ways:
Attendance line: 508-906-3713
Attendance email: hsattendance@millisschools.org
or you may send your student in with a note
If we don’t hear from a parent/guardian, the tardy will be unexcused. Upon arrival at school, the student should go directly to the office and sign in.
Dismissals
If your student needs to be dismissed, a parent/guardian must send their student in with a note or email the office at hsattendance@millisschools.org, listing the dismissal time and reason. Just a reminder that driving hours should not be scheduled during the school day, and do not constitute excused time away from school.
Phone calls for dismissals are not permitted.
Students are expected to check in with the office to confirm their dismissal and receive a pass. If we do not receive a note, a parent or guardian must come into the office to sign their student out at the time of dismissal. Please make every effort to adhere to this dismissal policy to minimize disruptions to class time. Please also be mindful of how a dismissal may impact your student’s eligibility to participate in extracurricular activities.
- Activities Eligibility Dismissal: If your student is involved in extracurricular activities and needs to be dismissed during the school day, they will need to provide a note from the place of their appointment (not a parental note) so they remain eligible to play or practice.
- Medical Dismissal: Any student requesting to leave for any kind of medical reason must go through the nurse’s office.
- Emergency Dismissal: In the event of a true emergency, a parent/guardian should contact the office. Every attempt will be made to expedite the dismissal. Please note, driving hours scheduled during the school day are not considered an emergency nor excusable under any circumstance. Every effort should be made to complete these hours outside of school hours.
Absence
If your student needs to be absent from school, a parent/guardian must notify the office via the attendance line at 508-906-3713 or by emailing hsattendance@millisschools.org as close to 8:00 AM as possible. If we don’t hear from a parent/guardian, the absence is unexcused and the student will be marked as truant. Attendance at school is incredibly important, and every effort possible should be made to maintain regular attendance at the high school.
